Omni-directional lamps, such as CFL’s and metal halide luminaires loose a great deal of lighting from inter-reflection and lamp shadowing which results in lower efficiency. Unlike CFL’s and metal halide luminaires, LEDs are directional light sources. When combined with effective optics, SSL downlights direct more of their light energy into the light environment, resulting in higher efficacy and higher resulting light levels with less total energy consumed.
