There’s a growing need for Ethernet switch connectivity over outdoor cabling infrastructure, driven by the growth of outdoor Access Points (APs) and outdoor IP-cameras. Connectivity over outdoor cabling presents unique challenges as the cabling infrastructure is exposed to the harsh outdoor environments and subject to lightning strikes that can cause damaging power surges. ADTRAN’s Solution The ADTRAN® NetVanta® PoE Protector/Injector is a unique device that combines a port protector with a PoE injector in a single unit allowing multiple applications. Port Protection and PoE Power The NetVanta PoE Protector/Injector functions as a single port Ethernet surge protector and also provides 802.3af or 802.3at (PoE/PoE+) power to outdoor PoE-powered devices. These include outdoor APs, IP surveillance cameras, and other outdoor IP devices, eliminating the need for a local power outlet.
The device also protects the switch port from voltage surges during lightning storms or AC power induction/cross currents that occur on the device side (AP, camera, etc.). Additionally, the protector/injector protects itself and the Ethernet port from becoming a fire or fragmentation hazard from lightning surges. PoE Injection for Non-PoE Switches In situations, where you need to power a handful of outdoor PoE endpoints, you can connect the PoE Protector to a non-PoE switch and use the optional 48 V power supply1 to inject power to the outdoor endpoint. Unlike many protector devices in the field the NetVanta PoE Protector/Injector does not require a ground connection; protection is accomplished by high voltage isolation.
