SAFE WORK PROCEDURE
DO NOT use this machine unless a teacher has instructed you in its safe use and operation and has given permission. PRE-OPERATIONAL SAFETY CHECKS: 1. Check workspaces and walkways to ensure no slip/trip hazards are present. 2. Locate and ensure you are familiar with the operation of the ON/OFF starter. 3. Use only materials free from defects. 4. Ensure the drill bit or cutting tool is securely locked in the chuck. 5. Ensure the key is removed from the chuck before turning on the power. 6. Machine must be isolated while drill bits are being installed. 7. Remove all adjusting keys and wrenches from the work surface prior to turning on the drill. 8. Ensure that the floor space around the equipment is sufficient to enable you to machine the size of work piece being processed safely without bumping into other workers or equipment 9. Faulty equipment must not be used. Immediately report suspect machinery to your teacher. 10. Never leave the machine running unattended. Do not leave the machine until the bit has come to a complete stop. 11. Before making adjustments switch off and bring the machine to a complete standstill. 12. Never start the drill with the drill bit pressed against the work piece. 13. Always keep hands and fingers away from the bit. 14. Use clamps or a vise to secure work pieces to keep them from rotating with the drill bit or cutting tool. OPERATING THE DRILL: 1. Inspect and don all personal protective equipment: safety glasses / face shield, hearing protection, proper footwear (closed toe / heal shoes). Remove all jewelry; loose clothing and tie back hair. DO NOT wear gloves when operating the drill press. 2. Ensure the 0n/Off switch is in the “off” position and plug the machine into properly grounded power source. 3. Select the appropriate drill bit for the job. Do not use dull or damaged drill bits. Insert the drill bit into the jaws. Turn the chuck barrel counterclockwise with the chuck key to tighten the jaws onto the bit. Remove the key. 4. Place material to be drilled or cut onto the table and clamp securely in place. Never start the drill with the bit in contact with the stock. 5. Do not drill with one hand while holding the material with the other. 6. Turn the drill switch to the ON position. And slowly drill into the work piece. Slow the rate of feed just before breaking through the surface. 7. Drill a small “pilot” hole before drilling large holes. 8. Do not use excessive force to drill into hard material. Reduce the drill speed if possible. 9. Clean up the dust and debris with the power turned off. If an emergency situation occurs while conducting this task or there is an equipment malfunction, shut the equipment off immediately and unplug the power tool. REPORT ANY HAZARDOUS SITUATION TO YOUR INSTRUCTOR / SUPERVISOR IMMEDIATELY.
