LED Descriptions The LEDs indicate the status of your Powerline adapters. •

When you plug in the adapter, the Power LED lights up and turns green. The XWN5001 can take up to 30 seconds to come up. The adapter is not active when no Ethernet link has occurred for more than 10 minutes. The XWN5001 adapter enters power turns amber. By default, saving mode and the Power LED the power saving mode function is disabled. The Ethernet LED lights up when you connect a powered-on Ethernet device to at least one Ethernet port. The Powerline LED turns on when the adapter detects at least one other compatible Powerline device. The Pick A Plug feature lets you pick the electrical outlet with the strongest link rate, indicated by the Powerline LED color: -
Green: Link rate > 80 Mbps (Best) Amber: Link rate > 50 and < 80 Mbps (Better) Red: Link rate < 50 Mbps (Good)

Button Descriptions The buttons on your Powerline adapters let you do the following: • • •
Factory Reset button. Press the Factory Reset button for 2 seconds to return your Powerline device to its default factory settings. Device On/Off switch.The wireless access point On/Off switch turns the XWN5001 on and off. Security button. The Security button has a double function—it secures the Powerline network and also provides an easy way (WPS) for your wireless client to join the WiFi network access point. To secure the Powerline Network: Once the Powerline adapters are active, you can use the Security button to add encryption to your Powerline network. Note that security is not set for Powerline adapter by default. NETGEAR recommends that you secure your Powerline network to protect your personal information and media from unwanted access. To join a secure wireless access point using WPS: WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup) lets your wireless client (such as a laptop) easily join the WiFi network of the XWN5001 access point, so you do not need to type the network name (SSID) and password.

Install the Adapters and Surf the Web with WiFi 1. Set up security for the adapters. Step 1. Plug in the two Powerline adapters.
Step 2. On each adapter, press the Security button for > 2 but < 5 seconds, and then release. The Power LED starts blinking.
The Power LED stops blinking. The Powerline LED turns on, and security pairing is done.

2. Install the adapters. Plug the Powerline 500 adapter into a wall outlet near your router/gateway and connect it to the LAN port using an Ethernet cable.
If you want to share Internet access across your home, make sure to connect the Powerline adapter to your Internet gateway. 3. Connect the Powerline WiFi access point. Plug the XWN5001 into a wall outlet where you need WiFi coverage. (Note that you can also connect an Ethernet-based device, such as a game console, set-top box or Blu-ray player, to the Internet and home network using the additional Ethernet port on the XWN5001.) 7

4. Secure your WiFi access point. There are two methods to secure your WiFi network for an XWN5001 access point. Method A: a. Download and install the Powerline Utility on your computer. b. Temporarily connect your computer to the Ethernet port on the XWN5001.

c. On the Powerline Utility screen, right-click the XWN5001 icon.

d. On the pop-up menu, select Wireless Configuration.
e. Enter the wireless settings.

Note: You can access advanced wireless settings by clicking the IP address at the bottom of the Wireless Setting screen. The login and password are admin and password. Method B (if your wireless client device has a WPS button) a. Press the WPS button on the wireless client. b. Press and hold the Security button on the wireless access point for about 2 seconds and release it. The Wireless LED starts flashing. When the Wireless LED stops flashing, the wireless pairing is done and the wireless device is securely connected to the XWN5001 WiFi Access Point. Note: This method pairs the XWN5001 with your wireless client, and at the same time secures the connection with a random passphrase.

5. Connect your wireless device to the XWN5001. Connect a laptop, table, or smartphone to the XWN5001 WiFi Access Point to gain access to the Internet. a. Launch the application on your wireless client (laptop, tablet, or smartphone). b. Refresh the WiFi network list to see the network SSID list. c. Connect to the WiFi network SSID NETGEAR_EXT or the one you configured in step 4, Method A, on page 8.
