Prefilter and Postfilter Cartridge Replacement PNRV18ZBB, PNRV18ZBL, PNRV18ZWH and PNRV18ZWW Prefilter and postfilter cartridge replacement, including sanitizing the system, will take approximately one hour.
If the Reverse Osmosis Filtration system is connected to your icemaker YOU MUST turn off the icemaker by raising the feeler arm before servicing the filter, changing the filters, or purging the filtration system. Four hours after servicing your unit, lower the feeler arm to resume icemaking. Diagram of Reverse Osmosis Filtration system and hook-up to sink

Be sure you clean your hands with anti-bacterial soap before handling inner parts of the system. 1. Be sure the water supply valve to the Reverse Osmosis system is turned off and the RO water faucet is open. Allow the system to drain completely (this takes several minutes). 2. Pull the Reverse Osmosis system away from cabinet, leave tubing connected. Place a dry towel under the system. Remove the green protective cap and depress the vacuum relief valve stem, allow air to enter tank. Release the valve stem AFTER flow from tank shutoff slows to a slight drip. Replace the green protective cap. 3. Remove the clamp retainers and sections from top of unit. 4. Lift the Reverse Osmosis cap straight up (slight resistance is normal) from the Reverse Osmosis housing (no need to disconnect tubing) and move aside.
NOTE: If the cap o-ring remained in the Reverse Osmosis housing, replace it on the cap. 5. Remove the Reverse Osmosis cartridge and the outer prefilter cartridge from the Reverse Osmosis housing and place the Reverse Osmosis cartridge in a clean plastic bag. Discard the prefilter cartridge. Dispose of water from the Reverse Osmosis housing.

6. Sanitize the system.
CAUTION: Before sanitizing, be sure to remove all cartridges as described above. Chlorine will destroy the Reverse Osmosis cartridge. Also be sure to isolate the carbon postfilter as described in 6c. a. Fill the Reverse Osmosis housing with fresh cold water, to about 1″ from the top. Add one ounce (two tablespoons) of ordinary 5.25% household chlorine bleach (Hilex, Clorox, etc.) and mix into the water. DO NOT ADD CHLORINE FIRST. Concentrated chlorine may damage plastics. b. Replace the Reverse Osmosis cap with o-ring and install the clamp retainers. c. Close the red tank shutoff valve, disconnect postfilter at tank shutoff valve. Connect the Reverse Osmosis water tubing (disconnect from electronics box) directly to the tank shutoff valve, isolating the carbon postfilter. See the illustration on the next page, titled “Isolating the carbon postfilter”.
d. Open the red tank shutoff valve and the water supply valve to the Reverse Osmosis system. Allow system to fill for one minute. Open the RO water faucet, locking the lever upward against the spout. e. Allow water to flow through the Reverse Osmosis system until all bleach odor is gone (approximately 20 minutes). f. Turn off the water supply valve to the Reverse Osmosis system. Close the RO water faucet AFTER water flow stops. g. Close the red tank shutoff valve. Disconnect the water product line from the red tank shutoff valve and connect to the electronics box. h. Reconnect postfilter line to red tank shutoff valve. Open red tank shutoff valve. i. Remove the clamp retainers and sections from top of the unit. Lift the Reverse Osmosis cap straight up (slight resistance is normal) from the Reverse Osmosis housing (no need to disconnect tubing) and move aside. Dispose of water from the Reverse Osmosis housing.
9. Disconnect tubing at both ends of postfilter. Refer to the illustration, on this page, titled “Isolating the carbon postfilter”. Be careful, water in tubing may spill. 10. Pull the postfilter from the holder and remove the fittings from both ends. 11. Remove the green protective cap and depress the vacuum relief valve stem, allowing air to enter the tank. Release the valve stem AFTER flow from the tank shutoff valve slows to a slight drip. Replace the green protective cap.
WARNING: This valve stem is for vacuum relief only. Pressurizing the tank may cause it to rupture. Do not attempt to pressurize the tank. Green protective cap Vacuum relief valve
NOTE: If the cap o-ring remained in the Reverse Osmosis housing, replace it on the cap. 7. Place the new prefilter cartridge in the Reverse Osmosis housing (watch for “THIS SIDE UP” on one end) and then slide the Reverse Osmosis cartridge into the top end of the new prefilter cartridge.
NOTE: Be sure the bottom end of the prefilter is at the bottom, and the UP arrow on the Reverse Osmosis cartridge points upward (o-ring end downward).
12. Remove protective caps from new postfilter. Replace postfilter into holder and reconnect the tubing at both ends. Be sure the flow arrow points downward.
8. Lightly lubricate the cap o-ring with only clean silicone grease. Then, push the cap into position and install the clamp retainers and sections.
Always replace the four “AA” alkaline batteries in the control box when changing the prefilter and postfilter cartridges. Good batteries are needed to assure proper indicator light operation. Weak batteries may give a false indication. Changing the batteries also resets the six month or 900 gallon period.

13. Open the water supply valve. Check for leaks.
NOTE: It will take approximately four hours to fully recharge your storage tank. You may notice ticking sounds at the faucet and the sound of water draining in your sink during this period. This is normal. FLOW

NOTE: Lights may not operate properly until system has been allowed to refill tank.

14. Before first use after filter changes, purge the system by opening RO water faucet for one minute to remove harmless carbon particles. Then, if your Reverse Osmosis system is connected to your refrigerator icemaker, after the storage tank is full, reset your icemaker feeler arm to the on (down) position.
