ESS Bilbao Project: Past & Present (Future??) ESS Bilbao team and Instituto de Fusión Nuclear Bilbao & Madrid (SPAIN) May 2015 ESS Bilbao Project: 2010-2014 ESS Bilbao Project (2010-2014): design and construct a small (efficient) neutron source This source was constructed and tested. Today is dismantled and stored The H+ source is fully operational, producing current between 40-70 mA in ESS Bilbao LEBT is also operational, now developing beam diagnostics RFQ fully design and review by external Review panel. Fabrication start June 2015 Target station and extraction neutron lines fully design (TDR). Evaluated by an External Review Panel with positive recommendations (Report available on request) However, this project was put on hold in 2014, due to lack of financial resources and the need to reorient the team to the ESS project -Today in ESS Bilbao the H+ source and LEBT are operational -The RFQ is under construction -In 2017 a proton beam of 3 MeV with 5075 mA, 14 Hz and pulses of 1.8-2 ms will be operational -A complete design of target and prototypes of DTL are available (including modulator) From 2014 ESS Bilbao focus on the In-Kind contributions to the ESS project. In particular: -MEBT complete (incl. diagnostics & control) -W Target wheel (He gas cooled) -Monolith vessel, proton beam window and proton beam dump SUMMARY -Today in ESS Bilbao the H+ source and LEBT are operational -The RFQ is under construction -In 2017 a proton beam of 3 MeV with 50-60 mA, 14 Hz and pulses of 1.8-2 ms will be operational -A complete design and prototypes of DTL are available (including modulator) -MEBT and W Target wheel will be some of our contributions to the ESS project
