Osram provides natural light for Berlin transport companies
The control room of the Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) in Berlin-Friedrichsfelde, Germany was planned and constructed in accordance with the latest ergonomic requirements. This also includes the CombiSol solar- and glare protection system from the Osram subsidiary Siteco, installed in the fenestrated 65m² roof of the control room. CombiSol provides highly effective protection from heat and glare and ensures the standard-compliant, ergonomic lighting of many computer screen workstations. At the same time, utilising the natural daylight achieves significant energy and operating cost savings with regard to lighting and air-conditioning. The transparent, openly designed BVG control room housing up to 21 employees gains much daylight via the rooflights. Daylight has fundamentally very good characteristics and is important for levels of well-being and the performance of people. It also supplies us with important information about the climate, space and time. In addition, utilising daylight is also a part of energy-efficient, intelligent lighting concepts because ingressing natural light intelligently into spaces means less consumption of artificial light. Daylight however also brings disadvantages such as the heating up of rooms in summer, or glare due to the extreme brightness deviations that can negatively affect work on computer screens. Daylight systems from Siteco use the advantages of natural light and compensate for its disadvantages. The CombiSol louvre system from Siteco installed in the BVG control station reflects direct "hot" sunlight coming from a southerly direction and guides diffuse "cool" daylight downwards at 65° angles onto the workstations. The system is installed in triple glazing and the inner glass panel has a matt finish to achieve a bright appearance on the glass surface. The glass in the roof light provides outstanding solar protection (g value = 10 %) without darkening the interior. CombiSol protects from excessive heating up of rooms in summer and simultaneously limits glare while providing uniform light distribution. This on the one hand ensures significant energy and operating cost savings with artificial lighting and air-conditioning, and on the other hand ensures good, glare-free visibility of variously arranged computer screens in control rooms. The dynamics of natural daylight help to minimise the monotonous nature of work in control rooms and promotes the attention levels and performance of employees.
