This is why, in practice, users constantly desire to install additional components in the existing rack. Eventually the first rack becomes full and an additional rack is required, which means the necessary space must also be available. Before this second rack is purchased, it can be more economical to look for ways of saving on height units with the installed components, or better still, to plan ahead for possible future expansion at the time the original rack is installed. For example, the 15 Inch monitor required for server administration occupies 8 valuable height units and the keyboard takes up another one. These height units would be much more effectively used to house an additional computer, a storage subsystem unit, or the longoverdue UPS. In many cases, the monitor is installed right at the top of the rack, which is not particularly user-friendly. Putting it anywhere else in the rack, on the other hand, would take up an extra height unit. With its 19 Inch Rack Console Fujitsu Siemens allows these height units to be used more effectively and at the same provides the basis for a much more ergonomic administration workstation. The Rack Console is designed as a slide-in module, occupies two height units, comprises keyboard and TFT monitor, and can optionally incorporate console switch functionality. If the height unit for the conventional keyboard slide-in module is included, a total of seven fewer height units are needed. www.fujitsu-siemens.com Design The Rack Console combines keyboard and monitor into a single functional unit. This combination is possible because of the low height of a TFT display. The monitor can be tilted to adjust the viewing angle and is positioned behind the keyboard with touch pad. When not in use, it folds away out of sight into the slide-in module. When inserted in the rack, it only occupies two height units. When retracted, the slide-in module is protected against unintentional movement by a locking mechanism. Ergonomics The TFT monitor not only contributes its recognised ergonomic advantages but also allows the entire console module to be adjusted to the optimum height. The operator has the keyboard and the monitor in front of him almost as if he were at a desktop. The monitor can be tilted to the optimum viewing angle. Enhanced functionality Many server installations consist of several individual computers (clusters, dedicated servers), and it is important that these can be administered from a central console position. This is where the optional console switch can prove invaluable, since it enables the keyboard with mouse and monitor to be switched between the individual computers. The switchover is effected from the Rack Console keyboard via hotkey. Using OSD (On Screen Display) , the relevant operator prompt is shown in a temporary pop-up window on the TFT monitor. The small drawer beneath the key-board is very practical. It can be used to store system-related documentation and frequently needed soft-ware tools.
