Processing a Chip Card is Easy Step 1: Identifying a Chip Card. Simply look for the metallic square (the microchip) on the left-hand side of the card above the card number. If there is no microchip, swipe the card and process the transaction as you did previously. Step 2: Using a Chip Card. l Before
inserting the chip card, enter the transaction amount and press enter.
l Insert
the card into the slot at the base of the terminal when prompted (rather than swiping it) and leave the card in the terminal for the duration of the transaction.
Step 5: Check the Receipt for Approval. l If
the transaction is approved, check for a signature line.
l If
a signature line appears on the receipt, have the cardholder sign the receipt and then verify the signature (refer to image 2).
l If
no signature line appears, no signature is required (refer to image 3).
l Note
that when the customer enters their PIN, it does not guarantee the transaction will be PIN approved. A prompt will indicate the cardholder’s signature is still required.
while the chip card is read by the terminal.

Why EMV? Magnetic stripe is an ageing technology. EMV brings Australia into line with the global move towards chip cards, making it easier for Australian cardholders to use their card overseas and for overseas visitors to transact here.
Can I Still Process Magnetic Stripe Cards?
the card supports a PIN, the terminal will prompt you for a PIN. should allow the cardholder the option of using their PIN, if they select their credit account.
EMV is an acronym for Europay, MasterCard, Visa – the three card schemes behind the global initiative to implement chip technology for the card payment industry. To put it simply, EMV is a general term for chip cards and their acceptance on EFTPOS terminals.
Chip cards offer a more secure way to process transactions. The chip contains security data and software providing greater security because it is more difficult to fraudulently copy the credit card details. Accepting chip cards will reduce your risk of processing a counterfeit, lost or stolen card transaction and being subject to a chargeback.
