At present the Institute is doing research on lithium-ion batteries, which play a key role in electromobility. The dynamic properties and aging behavior of these energy storage units play an important role in the development of future hybrid and electric vehicles and in the design of intelligent systems for bi-directional grid connection. Thus good simulation models are essential. And this is exactly where Schulz-Electronic can help. The Solution For the individual cell simulation of a virtual battery, IWES needed 2Q power supply units. As Fraunhofer IWES already knew Schulz-Electronic as a provider of high quality DC power supplies, the researchers from Kassel now approached the solution-developers from Baden-Baden. Schulz-Electronic had a suitable item in its portfolio: a rack with 40 DC power supplies by Delta Elektronika (SM7.580 incl. active programmable sink). Every power supply simulated a cell of a lithium-ion battery. In the automotive and supply industry the software ISETLAB has been established for many years as the standard software for simulating the dynamic behavior of lead-acid starter batteries. It models all the relevant physical and electrochemical processes in the cells, so that the software can be parametrized with simple manufacturer’s data. For this specific research project the ISET-LIB software package was developed on the same basis. Using this system, lithium-ion batteries can be simulated and tested.
