As you know, we have been in business since 1923, starting off as a mild-mannered hardware store. Since the 1950’s we have focused solely on cleaning chemicals and supplies, becoming one of Alberta’s most trusted companies for all things related to cleaning. The Story of Manufacturing In the 60’s, we began to manufacture our own cleaning products, starting with floor finish. By the 1970’s, we had outgrown our little brick building across from Grant McEwan College and moved to the location our head office is in now, modernizing and expanding our manufacturing capabilities. We are now updating our manufacturing plant again. We have completed a significant update in our chemical processing area, with new tanks and work area, and now, we are beginning a phase-out of oldstyle plastic jugs and pails, to more environmentally friendly bag-in-box style packaging. Our first newly packaged products are Double Diamond Glass Cleaner, and AquaScent. The Story of Our Products We have been continuously evolving, creating new products to meet our customer’s needs. This year, you may have seen some new Greer product faces, including Shred a restorative level stripper designed to bring finished floors back from the dead. DuroBrite is our new alkylphenol ethoxylates (APE) free, high-solids, high-durability finish ideal for lowmaintenance floor finish programs. Greer’s Peroxide Cleaner is a great environmentally-friendly general purpose cleaner and sanitizer that can be used on hard and soft floor surfaces, as well as a laundry additive for whitening clothing. It is not just Greer manufactured products that are changing. Perhaps one of the biggest changes our company has had is the addition of Tennant Co. to our list of valued partners. Tennant has been in the business of cleaning equipment since 1870, giving us a combined experience of over 240 years. Make sure to check out the equipment section of this guide for information on our Tennant offerings. One exciting new change we have made at the end of 2016 is the addition of our dedicated “mobile W.E. Greer Ltd. Product Reference Guide showroom” trailer. We know many of our customers cannot get into one of our offices to try out new products and equipment, or to talk one-on-one with our partner representatives, so the Greer Mobile Showroom trailer allows us to bring the products, equipment and people to you. We plan on regularly visiting customer sites throughout the year rather than the one summer/fall route a year like we have done in the past. The Story of Our Environmental Stewardship and Customer Safety Our customer’s needs are always on our minds here at Greer, but we also want to make sure we are good environmental stewards while doing it. We have always had “closed-loop” manufacturing which minimizes waste water, and our super-concentrated products ensure that we are wasting less fuel by transporting less water. To continue on this environmental path, we are now slowly moving our products to bag-inbox style packaging. Not only is it less packaging, but all bag-in-box packaging is completely recyclable. We are also ramping up for Canada’s new WHMIS 2015 safety data sheets (SDS), which includes the United Nation’s Globally Harmonized System (GHS) for safety symbol classification. By June of 2017 all Greer SDSs will comply to the new WHMIS style. All new product labelling includes QR codes that will link directly to the SDS for that product, and we have made all SDSs available on our website for our customers: just give us a quick call for the username/password. The Story of Our People Greer is not only a great company to do business with, it is a great company to work for. Many people on our staff have worked for our company for decades, including an inside sales staff member in our Grande Prairie office who has been with us for over 30 years! We are proud to have great people with tons of experience. At the same time, an old company means people retire and move on, so for that reason, we are starting to experience a downward shift in staff age. When a customer pops into our Edmonton office, they are met by two very cheery young Inside Sales consultants, full of energy and eagerness to help. We have also had several key administrative positions filled by new young staff, most notably, our new company Controller and new Supply Chain Manager. The Beginning of the Story 2018 is fast approaching, which will mark our 95th year in business. Many things have changed since we began, from products offered, to location, to people, but one thing has not changed in all the years since Greer’s Hardware first opened its doors: our desire to provide exceptional products and service to our customer base, and be a business role model while doing it. Suitable, when used as directed, for floors, walls, furniture, heavy equipment, etc. Dilution: 1:222. A ready-to-use, heavy-duty spray cleaner that safely defeats the most difficult stains from most washable surfaces. Eliminates ink, black heel marks, crayon, pencil, grease, lipstick and other tough stains. No rinse, no residue formula. Use in institutions, nursing homes, schools, clubs, industry, veterinary hospitals. Available for C3 Washroom Cleaner. Dilution: 1:25. Cleans, disinfects, sanitizes and is virucidal when used as directed. Ideal for hospitals, nursing homes, institutions, schools, and veterinary hospitals. It contains a dual quaternary ammonium compound for effectiveness against a broad range of both gram positive and gram negative microorganisms, and it meets the most recent requirements for biocidal activity and tolerance. Kills fungus and putrefactive bacteria that are the cause of foul odors from mildew, decomposition and decay. It is an excellent cleaner though neutral in pH to avoid dulling high gloss floors. Qualified for hospital. Effective against a wide range of gram negative and gram positive bacteria including Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and is EPA registered to kill AIDS virus. 1.9L concentrate size is available for both dilution control dispensers and C3 Touchless Washroom Cleaner. It is effective against a wide range of both gram positive and gram negative organisms and kills bacteria fungus and viruses as it cleans. Specifically recommended for hospital and institutional use. It kills highly resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa and qualifies for hospital use when used at only 20mL per 5L water. Airx 109 is also an excellent cleaner in industrial plants, office buildings, nursing homes, hotels, motels, schools, etc. Dilution: 1:256. 086110 4L 250171 6x1.9L/CS EV SUNRISE A disinfectant, cleaner, deodorizer and toilet bowl disinfectant for hospitals, nursing homes, and anywhere disinfection is important. Ideal for food service areas in that there is no colour or perfume to transfer to surfaces that come in contact with food. Well suited to customers wanting no perfume or odor counteractant. Product Reference Guide DISINFECTANT CLEANERS FOOD AREA APPROVED DISINFECTANTS & SANITIZERS FOOD AREA CLEANERS GREASE TRAP AND DRAIN CLEANER CSG 4000 CSG 1000 A powerful 100% organic solvent blended specifically for rapid and safe cleaning of grease traps and drain pipes. It contains deep penetrating citrus solvent plus emulsifiers for rapid dissolving and breakup of grease and oils. CSG 4000 contains no petroleum solvents or harmful chlorinated solvents. It is also an excellent cleaner for heavy machinery, engines, road tar or anywhere oil and grease is a problem. Dilution: RTU. Designed for use in food processing areas including meat rooms, storage areas, fish processing and poultry processing plants. In addition, CSG 1000 is an excellent general purpose cleaner in any area where oily greasy soils exist. CSG 1000 can be used as a one-step cleaner-disinfectant-sanitizer or can be used in combination with CSG 2000 to leave a clean, rinsed and sanitized surface. CSG 1000 contains a dual quaternary ammonium chloride disinfectant active ingredient to provide broad range kill of numerous bacteria found in food processing areas. It is a very effective sanitizer against E. coli and S. aureus when used as a final rinse after cleaning with CSG 1000 Cleaner Disinfectant or CSG 3000 Foam Cleaner. Using a dual quaternary ammonium sanitizer, CSG 2000 provides effective sanitizing when used as directed. This combination allows production of thick stable foam which clings to vertical surfaces and penetrates deeply into oily, greasy residues. Can also be used on other hard washable surfaces such as laminated plastics, enamel and ceramic. Dilution: RTU. Cleans, polishes, brightens and protects. Label should include product names and cautions. Dilute only enough product for a day’s use, otherwise use a ready-to-use product proven not to degrade with age. • W.E. Greer Ltd concentrated disinfectants have a shelflife of three years. Adjust trigger sprayer between a mist and a jet to deliver a wet spray over a wide area, or spray onto a clean cloth. • Do not atomize spray so finely that it floats in the air. Spray to wet surface completely and liberally enough to remain damp for several minutes. • Check for specific directions on the disinfectant you are using for proper contact time. Usually 5 to 10 minutes. Remove loosened soil with a clean cloth or sponge. • Rinse, or change wiping cloths and sponges frequently. If surface is heavily soiled, consider first application as a cleaning step, then apply a second application to disinfect. • Continue to rinse or change cloths or sponges as they become dirty. Wiping cloths used in areas of potential cross infection should be laundered or properly disposed of. • Where cloths are not to be laundered or discarded, rinse well in fresh disinfectant solution, wring and hang to dry. MOP AND BUCKET DISINFECTION CLEANING Measure both product and water for accurate dilution. • Use too little and you may not kill the organisms. Use too much and you will be wasting expensive product. Apply solution liberally to cover surface and keep damp for full contact time. Use flat microfibre mops for best coverage. • Check for specific directions on the disinfectant you are using for proper dwell time. Usually between 5 and 10 minutes. If surface is heavily soiled consider first application as a cleaning step, then apply a second application to disinfect. • Rinse mop thoroughly between applications. Reference Materials 53 HOW TO USE DEEP SCRUB FLOOR MAINTAINER STEP 1 STEP 2 Remove gross soils (labels, gum). Dust mop floor. Divide floor into workable sections. Place wet floor caution signs near work areas STEP 4 STEP 3 Dilute Deep Scrub (1:40). Scrub with blue pad and autoscrubber. Pick up solution with scrubber. STEP 5 Apply finish by outlining the area with your finish mop, then fill in using figure eight motion. Stay 6” away from edge for one coat. Apply only 2 coats. 45 MINUTES Allow 45 minutes between coats. Last coat should cover edges USING MICROFIBRE CLEANING CLOTHS When cleaning, it is important not to recontaminate the area with a dirty cloth. A new cloth surface should be used on each new area. You can accomplish this by folding your cloth into quarters (see right), providing you with eight separate sides to clean with. Just turn and refold as necessary to reveal a clean “side.” When the eight sides are used, change to a fresh cloth. For surfaces with a higher soil or bacteria load (e.g. toilets), microfibre should not be used. Rather, use paper wiper towels and dispose after each surface cleaned. Cloths should also be colour coordinated to the area they are meant to be used in so as to prevent crosscontamination. We recommend: BLUE Glass and Chrome GREEN General Surfaces YELLOW Washroom Surfaces HOW TO WASH WALLS Washing walls may sound like a simple job, but like anything, there are tips and tricks that make the task go more smoothly. Using the right tools is vital. To avoid putting strain on your arms and back, a wall washing tool on a long extension pole should be used. Also, using the correct motions for washing will increase your stamina, as the force is more evenly distributed across the body. Wall Washing Motions: 1. 2. 3. Hold the handle in front of you, keeping your elbows below shoulder height. To move the mop, walk forwards and backwards rather than move your arms up and down. Generate force using your legs as well as your arms. Start from the bottom of the wall, and clean upwards to prevent dripping. W.E. Greer Ltd. Product Reference Guide RED Disinfection 54 CHOOSING A PLASTIC BAG SIZE When choosing a bag size for your waste receptacles, there are a few important things you need to know about how bag dimensions are laid out. Polykar brand plastic bags are listed as such: “20 x 24 Black Light Bags”. What does this mean? The first number – “20” – is the width in inches; the second number – “24” – is the bag height; and the “Light” refers to the thickness of the bag. So what is the best way to clean a window or a pane of glass? Use one of our high quality glass cleaners or a solution of Squeaky Dish Detergent and water in a window bucket and follow the steps below: 1. Apply your solution with a window sleeve, and scrub. Vileda Professional window sleeves and swivel T-handles are ideal for this step. If you have stuck on dirt, carefully use a Super Scraper blade to remove the soil. Angle the blade to approximately 45 degrees, and move the blade only in a forward direction to prevent scratching. 2. Start in a dry area. For best results, keep a dry microfibre cloth on hand and wipe a finger-width edge of your window dry. Start your squeegee on that edge. 3. Hold your squeegee at a 45 degree angle to the glass. This will keep the blade firmly on the glass and allow you to pull the water all the way down the glass. 4. Use a continuous “S” motion. This will pull the water across and down the glass. See the diagram (right) for more detail. If your blade lifts off the glass, wipe the excess water from the blade onto your window sleeve before placing it back on the glass. 5. Wipe your edges and sills. When you are finished washing your window, wipe the window edges with a dry microfibre cloth, and clean your sills with a cotton bar wipe. 6. Floor finish to the rescue. If you have an outdoor sill that is prone to getting dirty, try applying a layer or two of floor finish to the sill. The water and dirt will be less likely to stick around. overl edge Reference Materials 55 SPOTTING PROCEDURES PROCEDURE 1 - SPOT CLEANING WITH AIRX 83 PEROXIDE STAIN REMOVER Alternately blot and drench area with water as soon as possible after occurrence. Blot the spot with a color safe cloth. Spray with Airx 83 and allow to sit for 5 minutes. Blot the spot again, and vacuum when dry. PROCEDURE 2 - “EATING” AWAY ORGANIC SOILS WITH AIRX 65 If spots from organic matter remain after other spot removal procedures fail, apply Airx 65 to the area. Cover the area with plastic to prevent evaporation. When the stain is gone, rinse well with water and blot the area dry. PROCEDURE 3 - USING SQUEAKY DISH DETERGENT FOR ADDED SOIL LIFT Mix 1/4 teaspoon Squeaky with 1 cup warm water and apply small amount to area. Soak and blot area with color safe cloth to lift the soil. Rinse with clean water and blot the area with a clean color safe cloth until all detergent is removed. PROCEDURE 4 - LIFTING STUBBORN OIL AND GREASY STAINS WITH A-BEN-A-QUI Apply a small amount of A-Ben-A-Qui to the soiled area and agitate with a clean color-safe cloth. A-Ben-A-Qui leaves a pink color behind. Remove the residue completely with an extractor or a spot-remover. PROCEDURE 5 - REMOVE STICKY MESSES WITH GUM AND WAX REMOVER Spray the soil with gum and wax remover. Lift the soil gently, then follow with normal spot removal procedures. PROCEDURE 6 - RINSE AWAY ICE MELTER AND SALT STAINS WITH WINTER RINSE AWAY Dilute Winter-Rinse-Away winter floor cleaner into an extractor at a ratio of 1:40 and extract the affected area. Allow the area to completely dry before allowing foot traffic back on. IMPORTANT: Always test a carpet product you have not used on your carpet before. Pick an inconspicuous area to test on so as to ensure there are no unforeseen issues. W.E. Greer Ltd. Product Reference Guide 56 CARPET SPOT CLEANING Stains and spots need to be removed as soon as discovered to minimize or prevent permanent damage to carpet fibres. Even carpeting treated at the mill to be stain resistant will discolor if spills are not cleaned up promptly. Any facility with carpeting and upholstery should also have a carpet spotter on hand. Commercial level spotters with a commercial carpet cleaner such as Airx 80 or 82 are useful for deeper stains or larger areas that need more than a quick soak and blot. Wiper (w) style or hard (h) mats are required in any area where there is soil created or there is a chance of wear to an area. Examples of these areas include: ◊ Kitchens (w) ◊ Maintenance areas (w) ◊ Elevators (w) ◊ Office work stations (h) ◊ Stairwells (w) ◊ Warehouse entrances (w) ◊ Water coolers (w) Small to medium sized wiper mats placed inside the entrance of a soil producing area will keep moisture, oils and dirt off the adjoining hard floor or carpet. Hard chair mats at workstations will prevent wear and tear on the carpet and floor area due to repetitive motion from chair casters. Entrance and functional matting requires regular maintenance in order to perform their jobs well. The more soil load in a mat, the less it is able to absorb and scrape from footwear.
