Create your own light with Profoto: Tools designed for Light Shaping The Profoto Philosophy
own distinct character of light. So you can create your own style with confidence in the quality and consistency of light from shot-to-shot in the studio or on location. This approach allows you the peace of mind whether you are in the studio with Pro-7, on a location shoot with the portable Acute2 and ComPact units, or running on the batteries of the portable Pro-7b.
The cornerstone of the Profoto design philosophy is to create tools for “shaping light.” The result is a totally modular system that is easy to understand and work with.
Perfect light After considering natural light, the light you create is the most important element. Natural light comes in unending varieties of hue and character. As a photographer, you can choose to patiently wait for the perfect light. Or create it, using the right tools, to control, complement, or recreate the beauty that nature provides.
Safety and total reliability Many electronic safeguards are incorporated to ensure Profoto generators are always ready to function, at their peak, for long periods of time. Profoto’s unique twist-lock lamp head connectors are among the safest in existence. For total reliability, the generator and heads must be able to withstand heavy duty use without failure.
Optically designed Light Shaping Tools The Profoto philosophy demands that tools be designed to shape light in specific ways, with minimum effort. Profoto’s unique modular system of optically designed light shaping tools allow you create the “perfect light” on demand. With them, you can work simply, consistently, and efficiently. To systematically create different types of light, you need to start with the basic concepts of direct, diffused and reflected light. The possibilities are endless, but the process should be creative, without being time consuming.
Look, listen and touch Look at the control panel, and you can start working right away. Use of the dials is intuitive and logical. Listen to the way parts click positively into place. Feel the rugged, lightweight, and practical styling of every component.
Take your style of light anywhere Anywhere, anytime. Whether you use it everyday in your own studio, or visit the top rental studios worldwide, you will find Profoto reliable and dependable. Use the Pro-7a or Pro-7s everyday in your studio or grab the Pro-7b battery powered studio unit for location work.
Achieve a distinctive quality of light With Profoto, you select from a versatile, modular system of light shaping instruments. Each with the ability to create its
The photographer’s tools are a natural part of the creative process. Like the painter’s brush, the sculptor’s chisel, or the musician’s instrument, their form and design should reflect their function. They should have the right feel, and be aesthetically pleasing. – Profoto founders Conny Dufgran and Eckhard Heine

Imagine a heavy duty, 1200 Ws studio generator. Now imagine disconnecting the power cable from the wall and bringing the unit to wherever you happen to be shooting. With the generator still working, as if nothing has happened. That's the Profoto Pro-7b.

Profoto Pro-7b:The ultimate in Battery Studio Flash the Pro-7 Ringflash, and the ProTwin head. Designed exclusively for the Pro-7b, there is also the smaller 7b head: light and portable, but still equipped with a strong 100W modelling lamp. Worth a special mention is the ProTwin head. With two separate Pro-7b generators, it gives you 2400 Ws in a single head – or faster recycling. When used with a single generator, the twin head delivers extremely short flash durations.
• Up to 250 full power flashes from a single battery cassette • Fast recycling: 0.09 – 2.8 sec. • Short, motion-freezing flash durations: 1/1400 – 1/3000 • Full 7 f-stop range in 1/6 step adjustments • Asymmetrical or symmetrical power distribution

Meeting the challenges on location
– 340202 A rugged, nylon transport bag with a shoulder strap and a handle. Perfect also for protection when shooting on location.
Working on location is always a challenge: There is not enough time. There is not enough space. There is not enough light. And worse: there is no electricity. Avoiding the inconvenience of a gas generator, you will look for battery-powered gear. Which traditionally means serious compromise in power and features. But not any more.
Pro-7b Technical data:
Leaving the studio with the Profoto Pro-7b, you are bringing 250 full power 1200Ws flashes. Along with two lamp outlets accepting the entire range of Profoto light shaping tools. And all of that in a box that recycles in just 2.8 seconds.
Pro-7b 1200
empty battery in just 2.5 hours, and it accepts a wide range of input power: 12-24V or 90-240V. Included with every Pro-7b is a standard 110/230V charger, loading the battery in 5 hours. Needless to say, the battery is replaceable. In other words, you just bring as much energy as needed. Also, because the Pro-7b battery is completely memory free, there is no penalty for partial charging.
– 900728
Use it while recharging it Back in the studio, using the snap-on universal power adapter, the Pro-7b can actually operate as a regular flash generator while the battery is being recharged. The adapter is fast, charging an 10
really fine-grained control. The two outlets allow the power to be split symmetrically or asymmetrically with a 2:1 ratio. Of course the unit provides consistent output flash after flash, hour after hour. Designed for the rugged conditions on location, the Pro-7b features sturdy knobs, rubber-clad grips and frames, as well as the outlets and switches conveniently placed on top. Also, the generator is equipped with the Profoto special non-arching safety connectors, for easy connecting/disconnecting of the head at any time.
Fine-grained energy control The output power can be adjusted over a full seven f-stop range, from 18.75Ws up to 1200Ws, in increments of 1/6 f-stop, for

Optional accessory reflectors expand the ring flash’s capabilities further. Optional Softlight Reflector increases the light source, for fewer sharp shadows. Optional Close-up Reflector focuses the light source 20" (50cm) in front of the camera lens. With smaller objects, the effect is completely shadow-free. Maximum firing rate is 9600Ws per minute, which equals four
Concentrates the Ring Flash into a smaller area some 50cm (20") in front of the flash for close-up and macro applications. This provides a higher concentration of light when photographing smaller objects, while still maintaining a perfect shadeless illumination. 13

Profoto Light Shaping Tools
Profoto Light Shaping Tools
Systematically Shape with Light Modular light shaping tools are the heart of the Profoto System design. They allow you to reveal your own artistic style with unparalleled quality of light with maximum control and the minimum equipment set up time. You can systematically work with dozens of tools and accessories to create the look you want. The impressive range of Profoto light shaping tools include a system of reflectors, spotlights and umbrellas, but it doesn’t stop there. Highly specialized accessories like the ProGlobe, ProBox, Hardbox and Profoto 5, 7 and 8 foot giant reflectors offer unique lighting solutions to any shooting situation. Each tool offers a specific character of light to create highlights and shadows in limitless combinations, a broad palette that is easy to work with. For the lighting artist in you.
settings 8 and 4 is approximately 3 f-stops. Along with its zoom feature, it accepts a variety of accessories including Grid & Filterholder, Barn Doors, Snoot, and 5°, 10° and 20° Grids for a wide range of light shaping possibilities. The Grid and Filterholder is the most versatile accessory for the Standard Zoom Reflector. Filters can be mounted between the light source and the accessory. There is an air space between the filter and the reflector which prevents the filter from getting burned. Besides a Filter Cassette, there is a diffusion filter included. It is a little known fact that grids are more efficient if a diffusion filter is mounted behind them (between the light source and the grid).
Light Control
Unique Zoom Function
Honeycomb grids narrow the light beam, and are available in 20°, 10°, and 5° coverage. The four-sided Barn Door mounts directly onto the Standard Zoom Reflector. It features springs for mounting filters and/or honeycomb grids. It blocks undesired light from the subject or the camera lens. Mounted on the reflector, it can control stray light and add additional control to the shadow areas. The Filterholder mounts directly onto the Standard Zoom Reflector. A gelatin filter or diffuser 40x40cm can be mounted. A Snoot, which is mounted into the Grid and Filterholder and locked in place by the Filter Cassette, provides concentrated light at a specific point.
The versatile Standard Zoom Reflector is supplied with most Profoto heads and is available separately. By pushing the reflector forward or backward on the lamp head, the spread and effect of the light can be greatly altered. Pushed back (to setting 8), it gives very even lighting over a broad area. The light-spread of 100 degrees, at a distance of 2m from a wall provides completely even illumination over an area 4m in diameter. At a setting of 7, the Standard Zoom reflector offers a narrower beam that can evenly fill an umbrella. At a setting of 4, the light is center weighted with a gradual light fall off at the edges. The difference between

Profoto Softlight Reflectors Direct light with soft shadows The silver-coloured Softlight Reflector gives focused light, while at the same time providing soft shadow definition, thanks to its large reflecting area. It is especially suitable for lighting materials or subjects in which the structure should be emphasized.
In portrait photography, it is meant to give form and character to the subject’s face. For both Softlight Reflectors, the center disc that blocks out the direct light can be replaced by an semi-opaque opal glass disc to create a center hot spot which also eliminates a donut-hole effect in specular highlights. Each reflector can be supplemented by a honeycomb grid to create soft, toned-down edge-lighting. The Softlight Grid accessory yields 10° coverage with the silver, and 25° with the white reflector, for more directed light.
The white Softlight Reflector also known as “The Beauty Dish” gives a soft, yet directional light. Meant to provide character lighting in portrait photography, the Softlight is superb for a wide variety of uses from product photography to architectural or environmental studies. Also, a distinctive alternative to the widely used softboxes. Character lighting refers to a source of light that is placed close to the subject.
A 1/3 f-stop frontal diffuser is also available to reduce output and soften the light.

Profoto Softboxes RFand Octas
One tool– Two effects The new Profoto softboxes are better crafted and more versatile than ever, actually offering two illumination effects in one single tool. When used as traditional softboxes, the light produced is extremely even and homogeneous, with clean highlights, saturated colours, and really delicate shadows. With both diffusors removed, these light shaping tools turn into large reflectors with special illumination effects, suitable for portraits and fashion.
Profoto Softbox 1x4' – 25 45 24
Profoto Softboxes are all: Tough and resistent outer fabric, guaranteed to last for years and years of heavy duty use. High-quality steel rods holding the structure solid and keeping its shape, even after a lot of shooting on location, packing and unpacking, etc. Rounded metal knobs at the end of each rod, for extra protection of gear and user. Internal silver coating, optimised for maximum light reflection. Exchangeable inner diffusor to allow variable diffusion and output. Recessed front diffusor, to minimize stray light and increase the light control. Maximum resistance to UV light, preventing the diffusors from going yellow. Heat resistant materials in every part of the tool, to cope with the heat generated by the lamps. Ventilation openings, even allowing the use of Tungsten and HMI lights.
Softbox RF 1x4' For wide or tall lighting This 30x120 cm striplight softbox is ideal for a lot of situations, among others well-directed lighting in people photography or lateral fill-in at product shots. To mention a few. The exchangeable internal diffusor ensures an extremely low light fall off, even for such a large construction. 24

Profoto recently introduced a new line of professional Softboxes. These light shapers offer the photographer perfectly uniform illumination, from the center to the edges, in combination with a narrow profile. The new Softboxes are available in a range of sizes and shapes, from 60x60cm square to 120x180cm rectangular and up to 150cm octagonal. With the 30x90cm, the 30x120cm and the 30x180cm striplights, this expanding line of light shapers offers a world of possibilities. Profoto Softboxes also features a removable internal diffuser for additional versatility. With the internal diffuser attached, the light is uniform; when removed, the illumination is focused in the center of the box with a gradation towards the circumference. As a part of the new design, there is also a recessed front diffuser that can be removed to increase the contrast and produce a centerweighed spot effect. All of these units come with a velcro strip to hold accessories, such as softgrids and masks. On some of the softboxes it is even possible to remove both diffusers and use it as a reflector. 25 45 25 – 25 45 26 – 25 45 27 – 25 45 27 – 25 45 36 – 25 45 24 – 25 45 34 –

With the White Umbrella you get a evenly spread, diffused lighting effect, with soft shadows. The closer to the subject the umbrella is placed, the softer the shadows. The White Umbrella is available in sizes of 85cm, 105cm and 130cm in diameter.
All three reflectors come with a transportation bag and a stand adapter; optional snap-on diffusers can be used for added versatility.
The Translucent Umbrella provides diffused lighting around a brighter core. The lighting can be varied by changing its distance to the lamp head. Translucent Umbrellas are available in sizes of 85cm and 105cm in diameter.
Flexible Light Control
The largest light shaping tools from Profoto are the 5, 7 & 8 foot reflectors, with equivalent diameters of 153, 213 and 250cm. These giant accessories are true parabolic reflectors made of a silver fabric. For comparison, the huge 8' Reflector has an illuminated surface area 50% larger than the 7' Reflector and 200% larger than the 5 foot Reflector.
The center pole consists of two rods that can be used individually or combined, for maximum freedom when positioning the head. By using the rods differently, there are four different ways of positioning the head, corresponding to anything from a large size spot to broad floodlight. The head mount has also been equipped with a spill kill reflector; by sliding the head back and forth, stray light can be controlled and eliminated. Since the lamp head is fastened with Profoto’s unique rubber collar, the focusing can be finely adjusted in each position. With a Profoto Pro-7 2400 at 2 meters, up to f-stop 64 (ISO 100/21°) is possible.
Each reflector gives a unique crisp light. Since the light source is so large the lighting still appears soft with a distinct brilliance, which for instance brings out structural details in materials. These giant reflectors accept all Profoto heads, including our Tungsten heads. The Profoto 5', 7' and 8' reflectors are collapsible for easy transportation. Thanks to their lightweight but solid design and easy handling, they are also well suited for location work.
The Silver Umbrella provides focused lighting yet with soft shadows. It is especially suitable for bringing out structural details in materials or if a higher light output is needed. The Silver Umbrella is offered in sizes of 105cm and 130cm in diameter.

Profoto Special Tools for Light Shaping The solid face of the ProBox offers perfectly even edge-toedge illumination without reflections. And since the front is waterproof it is perfectly suited for “Pour” or “Splash” shots, as it can be quickly dried in between exposures to keep reflections clean. The 20x25cm size is perfect for most table-top applications. However, if situations call for a larger light source, the ProBox excels simply by stacking several boxes together. The wrap of the edge permits additional units to be joined seamlessly when fired. Since the ProBox accepts standard heads it offers true proportional modelling light control. Also, the use of multiple boxes permit a higher light output when several boxes are used.
Spotlights ProGlobe
For highly concentrated and directional light you have the Profoto spotlights, always producing that striking effect. Every Spotlight provide a focused light, but they all have different character and form. The Profoto Spotlights accept all Pro-7, Acute series lamp heads, as well as all ComPact units
(including Speed Ring) The ProGlobe gives an enveloping light that engulfs the subject in a manner very similar to a bare bulb. Due to the large size of this light shaping tool, however, the effect created is very soft. Visually reminiscent of a street lamp in the overall direction of illumination, it produces softer shadows and less harsh highlights then its urban counterpart. Cinematographers call this a “Chinese lantern”. Its soft glow is perfect for a quick location setup or in combination with large softboxes for illumination of larger sets such as furniture and interiors. The ProGlobe creates very soft light – similar to a “window light” – over a large area when used in combination with big softboxes. It can also be used as a background light or placed underneath a table for product photography.
ProFresnel With its large front lens (30cm diameter), the ProFresnel Spotlight offers a quality of light very reminiscent of ’50s style movie lighting. Focused, directional light offers dramatic highlights with distinct shadows, in a way very similar to theatrical spotlights from years ago. This unique light shaping tool can be focused by sliding the lamp head front to back within the housing. Control can further be accentuated through the use of the four wing barndoors to control stray light that otherwise could affect the depth of the shadows

ProBox The ProBox is primarily meant to provide even lighting for small subjects. Similar in effect to a small softbox, the ProBox offers additional advantages of being rigid, thus eliminates wrinkles and imperfections sometimes visible in glass or silver motives, when using soft boxes.

Hardbox
The ProFocus spotlight holds a high-resolution 150mm/2.0 MC lens, thus producing razor sharp edges. This in turn allows for clean, crips patterns, or the projecting of slides without colour fringing. And since it uses a standard Profoto Flash head, the images projected are daylight correct in colour temperature. Optional slide holders hold glass mounted 35mm, 6x4.5 or 6x6 transparencies. 10 06 52 – 10 06 95 – 10 06 94 – 10 06 86 – 10 06 87 –
This unique light shaping tool is actually a kind of absorber that eliminates stray light and reduces the size of the light source to its minimum. With the Hardbox, you can create a lighting effect similar to direct sunlight, with deep sharp shadows and pinpoint sized highlights. For improved light control, the Hardbox accepts the same accessories as the Standard Zoom Reflector. For best results, use the Hardbox in combination with clear glass covers.
