Install piping to conserve building space and not interfere with use of space. Route piping in orderly manner and maintain gradient. Group whenever practical at common elevations. Install piping to allow for expansion and contraction without stressing pipe, joints, or connected equipment. Provide clearance for installation of insulation and access to valves, air vents, drains and fittings. Install unions downstream of valves, at branch connections to mains, and at equipment or apparatus connections. Unions are not required in installations using grooved mechanical joint couplings. (The couplings shall serve as unions and disconnect points.) Provide non-conducting dielectric connections wherever jointing dissimilar metals. Install brass male adapters each side of valves in copper piped system. Sweat solder adapters to pipe. Extend clean outs to finish floor or wall surface. Lubricate threaded clean out plugs with mixture of graphite and linseed oil. Ensure clearance at clean out for rodding of drainage system. Prior to building turnover remove cleanout plugs, re-lubricate and re-install using only enough force to ensure permanent leakproof joint. Install water hammer arrestors complete with accessible isolation valve on supply to each fixture or group of fixtures in a single room. Screw joint steel piping up to and including 38 mm (1-1/2"). Weld piping 63 mm (2-1/2") and larger, including branch connections. Screw or weld 50 mm (2") piping. Make screwed joints with full cut standard taper pipe threads with approved non-toxic joint compound applied to male threads only. Use main sized saddle type branch connections or directly connecting branch lines to mains in steel piping if main is at least one pipe size larger than the branch for up to 150 mm (6") mains and if main is at least two pipe sizes larger than branch for 200 mm (8") and larger mains. Do not project branch pipes inside the main pipe. Make joints for cast iron bell and spigot pipe with neoprene gasketing system, or PC4 caulking compound. Make joints for plain end pipe with gasket and clamp type mechanical fastener. Clamp cast iron water pipe at fittings with 20 mm (3/4") rods and properly anchor and support. Use grooved mechanical couplings and mechanical fasteners in accessible locations, risers, pipe chases, and in other locations as approved by the Engineer. Use flexible couplings at pumps, coils and all vibration isolated equipment in lieu of flexible connectors, all other couplings to be rigid. Grooved joints shall be installed in accordance with the manufacturer's latest published installation instructions. The grooved coupling manufacturer's factory trained representative shall provide on-site training for Contractor's field personnel in the use of grooving tools and installation of grooved joint products. The representative shall periodically visit the job site and review Contractor is following best recommended practices in grooved product installation. (A distributor's representative is not considered qualified to conduct the training or job site visits). Provide non-conducting type connections wherever jointing dissimilar metals in systems. Brass adaptors and valves are acceptable. Pressfit piping and fittings to be installed in strict accordance with manufacturer's recommendations.

Use of PVC plastic pipe allowed where approved by the authority having jurisdiction. PVC pipe run in plenum spaces shall have flame and smoke rating for that purpose. PVC pipe to be complete with ULC labelled fire stopping wherever penetrating fire separations. Install vacuum breakers on plumbing lines where contamination of domestic water may occur; generally necessary on flush valves. Where floor drains are located over occupied areas, provide waterproof installation. Install trap primers where required by Codes and/or where indicated on drawings. Install pressure reducing valves to limit maximum static pressure at plumbing fixtures to 550 kPa (80 psi). Install isolation and drain valves at the base of all risers.

ROUTES AND GRADES .1 Route piping in orderly manner and maintain proper grades. Install to conserve headroom and interfere as little as possible with use of space. Run exposed piping parallel to walls. Group piping wherever practical at common elevations. Install concealed pipes close to the building structure to keep furrings to a minimum. .2 Slope water piping 25 mm in 12 m (1" in 40') and arrange to drain at low points. .3 On closed systems, equip low points with 20 mm (3/4") drain valves and hose nipples. Provide, at high points, collecting chambers and high capacity float operated automatic air vents. .4 Make reductions in water pipes with eccentric reducing fittings installed to provide drainage and venting. .5 Grade horizontal drainage and vent piping 22 mm per meter (1/4" per foot) minimum unless otherwise indicated on drawings.

PLUMBING FIXTURE INSTALLATION .1 Install each fixture with its own trap, easily removable for servicing and cleaning. At completion thoroughly clean plumbing fixtures and equipment. .2 Provide chrome plated rigid or flexible supplies to fixtures with screwdriver stops, reducers and escutcheons. .3 Install wall mounted lavatories, urinals and water closets with approved wall carriers, model to suit installation. .4 Mount fixtures the following heights above finished floor; unless noted otherwise on Architectural drawings: Water Closet: Standard 355 mm (14") to top of bowl rim Handicapped 410 mm (16.5") to top of bowl rim Urinal: Standard 558 mm (22") to top of bowl rim Handicapped 430 mm (17") to top of bowl rim Lavatory: Standard 813 mm (32") to top of basin rim Handicapped 850 mm (34") to top of basin rim

VALVE INSTALLATION AND APPLICATION .1 Install valves with stems upright or horizontal, not inverted. .2 Install gate, ball and butterfly valves for isolating service, to isolate equipment, part of systems or vertical risers. .3 Install globe, ball or angle valves for throttling service and control device or meter bypass. .4 Use plug cocks for gas service. .5 Use plug cocks in water systems for throttling service. Use non-lubricated plug cocks only when shut-off or isolation valves are also provided. .6 Provide drain valves at main shut-off valves, low points of piping and apparatus. .7 Provide thermometer wells and thermometers at locations shown on drawings.
3.6
DISINFECTION OF DOMESTIC WATER PIPING SYSTEM .1 Prior to starting work, verify system is complete, flushed and clean. Ensure PH of water to be treated is between 7.4 and 7.6 by adding alkali (caustic soda or soda ash) or acid (hydrochloric). .2 Inject disinfectant, free chlorine in liquid, powder, tablet or gas form, throughout system to obtain 50 to 80 mg/l residual. .3 Bleed water from outlets to ensure distribution and test for disinfectant residual at minimum 15 percent of outlets. Maintain disinfectant in system for 24 hours. If final disinfectant residual tests less than 25 mg/L, repeat treatment. .4 Flush disinfectant from system until residual equal to that of incoming water or 1.0 mg/L. Take samples no sooner than 24 hours after flushing, from 10 percent of outlets and from water entry, and analyze.
