How to Accurately Measure Temperatures
1) °C / °F and Battery To switch between Celsius or Fahrenheit, slide switch (A) to select C or F. When necessary, replace the 9v battery as shown in diagram.
1) Locating a Hot Spot To find a hop spot aim the thermometer outside the area of interests, then scan across with an up and down motion until you locate the hot spot.

Compact, rugged, and easy to use—just aim, push the button, and read current surface temperatures in less than a second. You can safely measure surface temperatures of hot, hazardous, or hard-to-reach objects without contact.

3) Operating the Unit To measure a temperature, point the ProTemp 6 at the object or surface to be measured and press and hold the ProTemp 6’s “On” button. The pointing laser will be activated. Point it at the areas to be measured. The laser identifies the center of the area.
How it Works Infrared thermometers measure the surface temperature of an object. The unit’s optics sense emitted, reflected, and transmitted energy, which is collected and focused onto a detector. The unit’s electronics translate the information into a temperature reading which is displayed on the unit. The built in laser aids in pointing the thermometer by identifying the center of the measurement area.
2) Distance & Spot Size As the distance (D) from the object increases the spot size (S) of the area measured by the unit becomes larger.
3) Field of View Make sure that the target is larger than the unit’s spot size. The smaller the target, the closer you should be to it. When accuracy is critical, make sure the target is at least twice as large as the spot size.
The display of the ProTemp 6 will light up (this is only visible in reduced lighting), the “Battery Gauge” will indicate the state of charge of the battery, the “Measurement in Process” icon will oscillate, and the measured temperature will be displayed (in °C or °F, as selected by the user). Release the “On” button. The “Hold” icon will light and the “Measurement in Process” icon will go off. The ProTemp 6 will hold and display the previously measured temperature for about 7 seconds, and then turn itself off.
4) Cautions All models should be protected from the following: • EMF (electro-magnetic fields) from arc welders, induction heaters, • Static electricity • Thermal shock (caused by large or abrupt ambient temperature changes—allow 30 minutes for unit to stabilize before use) • Do not leave the unit on or near objects of high temperature.
WARNING!!! Do not point laser directly at eye or view indirectly off reflective surfaces.

The Triplett Corporation warrants instruments and test equipment manufactured by it to be free from defective material or workmanship and agrees to repair or replace such products which, under normal use and service, disclose the defect to be the fault of our manufacturing, with no charge within one year of the date of original purchase for parts and labor. If we are unable to repair or replace the product, we will make a refund of the purchase price. Consult the Instruction Manual for instructions regarding the proper use and servicing of instruments and test equipment. Our obligation under this warranty is limited to repairing, replacing, or making refund on any instrument or test equipment which proves to be defective within three years from the date of original purchase.
To register a claim under the provisions of this warranty, contact Triplett Corporation’s Customer Service Department for a Return Authorization Number (RMA) and return instructions. No returned product will be accepted without an RMA number. Upon our inspection of the product, we will advise you as to the disposition of your claim.
5) Reminders Not recommended for use in measuring shiny or polished metal surfaces (stainless steel, aluminum, etc.) See Emissivity. 6) Emissivity Most organic materials and painted or oxidized surfaces have an Emissivity of 0.95 (preset in the unit). Inaccurate readings will result from measuring shiny or polished metal surfaces. To compensate, cover the surface to be measured with masking tape or flat black paint. Allow time for the tape to reach the same temperature as the material underneath it. Measure the temperature of the tape or painted surface. 7) Maintenance Lens Cleaning: Blow off loose particles using clean compressed air. Gently brush remaining debris away with a camel’s hair brush. Carefully wipe the surface with a moist cotton swab. The swab may be moistened with water. NOTE: DO NOT use solvents to clean the plastic lens. Case Cleaning: Use soap and water on a damp sponge or soft clot. NOTE: DO NOT submerge the unit in water.

This warranty does not apply to any of our products which have been repaired or altered by unauthorized persons in any way so as, in our sole judgment, to injure their stability or reliability, or which have been subject to misuse, abuse, misapplication, negligence, accident or which have had the serial numbers altered, defaced, or removed. Accessories, including batteries and fuses, not of our manufacture used with this product are not covered by this warranty.
ALL WARRANTIES IMPLIED BY LAW ARE HEREBY LIMITED TO A PERIOD OF ONE YEAR FROM DATE OF PURCHASE, AND THE PROVISIONS OF THE WARRANTY ARE EXPRESSLY IN LIEU OF ANY OTHER WARRANTIES EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED. The purchaser agrees to assume all liability for any damages and bodily injury which may result from the use or misuse of the product by the purchaser, his employees, or others, and the remedies provided for in this warranty are expressly in lieu of any other liability Triplett Corporation may have, including incidental or consequential damages.

TRIPLETT PRODUCT RETURN INSTRUCTIONS In the unlikely event that you must return your ProTemp 6 for repair,the following steps must be taken. 1) Call 1-800-TRIPLETT to obtain a Return Material Authorization (RMA) number from Customer Service. 2) Enclose a copy of the original sales receipt showing date of purchase. 3) Clearly print the RMA number on the outside of the shipping container. 4) Return to: Triplett Corporation One Triplett Drive Bluffton, OH 45817 ATTN: Repair Dept.
