LTO-6 Now Shipping – Should You Upgrade? LTO-6 tape drives are now shipping and hold more than 6TB per cartridge, which is a little more than double the capacity of LTO-5, and 4X that of LTO-4. Deciding which LTO product best meets your needs depends on the unique circumstances of your situation. Things to Consider:
• How much data do you have to protect? How fast is your data growing? Typically, customers plan for 3-5 years of service. The amount of data and the rate of data growth will influence what product will best meet your needs. Tape libraries, like the Scalar i40/i80, provide the greatest flexibility for growth because they offer tape drive, as well as tape slot, expansion. The Scalar i40/i80 also include library partitioning, where one library can be divided into multiple “autonomous” libraries with a shared robot, enabling hardware consolidation for lower cost and easier management. • Currently the cost of LTO-6 tape cartridges is more than double that of LTO-5; at roughly $120 and $50 respectively. The higher cost of LTO-6 media more than offsets the 2X capacity advantage gained over LTO-5. This higher cost is common for new-generation tape media, and typically declines relatively fast. One option to consider is buying an LTO-6 automation product and using LTO-5 media until the cost of LTO-6 media declines appropriately. This approach allows you to build in additional capacity/performance expansion, but leverage that expansion when the economics make better sense. • Do you currently have older LTO media you need to access? It’s important to maintain read compatibility with data on older media that you may need to access. As noted in the table on the front page, LTO technology has consistently maintained 1 generation backward-write capability (LTO-6 can write LTO-5 format, and LTO-5 can write LTO-4 format, etc.), and 2 generations backward-read capability (LTO-6
can read LTO-5 and LTO-4 formats, etc.). How often you need to read from the older generation tapes will impact the best approach for you. Frequently accessed tapes would benefit from implementing a tape technology in production that can read the older tapes. For example, if you have LTO-4 tapes onsite that need to be read fairly often, then you should ensure an LTO-4 or LTO-5 drive is readily available. The Scalar i40/i80 libraries support mixed generations within the same library. This same approach could be used if reading from the older tapes seldom occurs; or another approach is to keep an older autoloader or standalone tape drive available for these infrequent needs. • Do you now, or are you planning to, back up to disk before storing data longer-term on tape? With more people using disk for their short-term backup needs, as deduplication appliances like Quantum’s DXi4000 series make disk backup more affordable, the role of tape is changing. Tape is still the best solution for long-term storage and archiving, but with disk in front of tape, the required tape features are likely different: perhaps not as many slots are needed; performance may not be as important; ease of import and export will remain very important for off-site storage, and use of I/E slots (or mailboxes) will be nice to simplify this process and off-load the administrative task to non-technical personnel. One feature that may be particularly interesting for archival purposes is LTFS (Linear Tape File System), which allows you to drag and drop files from your server to tape, see the list of saved files using a standard operating system directory (no backup software catalog needed), and use point-and-click to restore.
