Disposal of mobile phones You can dispose of your old phone at any Swisscom sales outlet. Swisscom actively pursues an environmentally-friendly recycling policy.
1. Getting started
1. Insert your SIM card and battery Swing open the SIM card holder. Place your SIM card in its socket (gold contacts facing down). Swing the holder closed again and insert the battery (gold contact edge first). Place the upper edge of the cover in place, and slide it forward until it clicks shut. 2. Insert the Micro SD memory card Swing open the card holder on the side of the handset. Push the Micro SD card into its socket (gold contact edge first) until it clicks, then close the holder. This enlarges your mobile phone’s memory. 3. Turn it on Press and hold the Power key on the top of the handset. (You do the same to turn it off again.) The battery may need charging (a full charge should take at least 90 minutes).

2. Using the handset Keys and navigation

Power key (on top of phone): Press and hold to turn your mobile phone on and off. Press briefly to bring up the Profile menu (use this to select Silent mode). Send key: Starts or answers a call. Press (in standby mode) for Dialled numbers. Soft keys: Press to choose whatever option is displayed in the bottom left or right of the screen. In standby mode the left soft key opens Go to, and the right one starts Vodafone live! Navigation key: Press to select an item or open a folder. Press the key sideways to navigate round menus, scroll through lists or play games. It also opens whatever option is shown in the screen above it, so in standby mode it opens the main Menu. In standby mode, press to open the Calendar, to open My Items, to open Names (when Active Standby mode is switched off; see page 6), and to write a new Text message. End key: (During a call) Ends a call. At all other times takes you directly back to the Standby screen. Camera key (on the side of the phone): Press briefly for the camera, and press and hold for the video recorder. 5
Volume keys (on the side of the phone): Press to adjust the call volume, or to zoom in and out in camera mode. Folders and applications: Press the key in standby mode to go to the main menu. This is where all your folders and applications are stored. Use the navigation key to move around them, and press it to open a folder or start an application. The Options menu lets you move or rename folders and create new ones. Active Standby mode: To activate Active Standby mode, go to Menu/Settings/Main Display/Standby mode settings/Active Standby. Press in standby mode to open Active Standby. This screen lets you create notes, view and create calendar entries, turn on your Music player or Radio, and easily access other applications. Use the navigation key to highlight the application you want, then press to open it. Marking selections: To select more than one item in a list (for deletion, say), highlight each item you want to mark and press Options and then Mark. You’ll see a tick appear beside each selected item.

3. Using the camera With the built-in 2 megapixel digital zoom camera it’s easy to take photos and video clips. You can send these to friends and family as a picture or video message (MMS – see page 8).

Take and send a photo or video clip 1. Turn on the camera Turn the phone sideways. To use the camera, press the camera key briefly. To use the video recorder, press and hold the camera key . Press the volume keys to zoom in or out, and press to switch between camera and video modes. The Options menu lets you change the Settings for image quality and video length, or choose sequence (multi-shot) mode and self-timer. 2. Take the photo or video clip Press the camera key to take a picture or start recording a video clip (press Stop to stop recording). It will be saved in the Images or Video clips sections of the My Items folder in the main menu. 3. Send the photo or video clip Press Play to see your video clip. To send your photo, press Send, or Options/Send for a video clip. You can also add it to a picture or video message later (see page 8). Press Options for other options, such as adding a photo or video to a contact.

4. Picture and video messaging (MMS) With picture and video messaging (MMS) you can not only send text messages – you can send pictures, video clips and sounds as well!
Create and send a message 1. Create a new message In standby mode, press Menu/Messaging/Create message/Multimedia. 2. Enter the text Press and choose Text. Write your message using the keypad. Press 0 for a space, Clear to delete, 1 to cycle through common punctuation, and press and hold the * key for all symbols. Press Options for the text Options menu. Note: Press the # key to cycle through the Predictive ( ) and Multitap ( ) modes, in normal or lower-case. If words are underlined, press the * key to cycle through alternative words. Press and hold a number key to enter that number, or press and hold the # key to go to Numeric mode. 3. Add a photo or video clip Press twice and select Image or Video clip. Choose the photo or video you want to send, and then press Insert. You’ll now see it as part of your message.

4. Add a sound clip Press to highlight the next section, and press , then select Sound clip. Choose the sound clip you want to send. You’ll see an icon in the menu bar when a sound is added. To record a new sound choose New Sound clip.

5. Preview Select Options/Preview to see (and press to hear) your message. Press Back to return to the message screen. To delete an item, press Options/Remove. 6. Send your MMS Press Options/Send. In the To: box, enter the mobile number you want to send to. Press to insert a number or e-mail address from your Contacts list. To switch between Numeric and Text entry (to send to an e-mail address), press and hold the # key (abc appears in the top right of the screen). You can then enter a subject title if you want to. Then press Options/Send.

MMS hints 1. Sending to a mobile phone If a receiving mobile phone isn’t picture message or video message compatible, the recipient will get a link to view your message in the Internet. 2. Adding more To add more photos, text, sound or video clips to your message, press Options/Insert/ Slide. Note: If you insert a large video clip, a new slide is created automatically.

Connect to Vodafone live! 1. Opening Vodafone live! In standby mode, simply press [ ] to connect you to the Vodafone live! home page. To exit, press Options/Exit. 2. Browsing Simply use the navigation keys to highlight the item you want to select, then press to open that page. Press Back to go back a page. 3. Browser options Press Options for the Browser Option menu. From here you can bookmark a page, enter a new URL or even send the URL of the page you are on as part of a text message. 4. What’s new? Vodafone live! is always evolving to bring you new and better services – keep checking to see what’s new.

You can also go directly to many Vodafone live! services using the Nokia 6234’s builtin links. The links are stored on the phone, so you won’t be connected until you select a service by clicking on it.
Direct links to Vodafone live! services Open Menu/Web/Bookmarks. Here are some of the services you can choose: Sounds: download sounds and ringtones for your Nokia 6234. Games: download games for your Nokia 6234. News: get the latest news reports and weather forecasts.

6. Downloading Change your Nokia 6234 whenever you want by downloading new real music ringtones, videos, games and background wallpaper from Vodafone live!

Downloading to your mobile phone 1. Wallpaper, screensavers and ringtones Go to Menu/My Items/Options/Downloads. Select Graphic downloads for images and wallpaper, or Tone downloads for ringtones and sounds. Find what you want to download, then follow the on-screen instructions. To set a sound as your new ringtone, go to My Items/Tones/Ringing tones in the main Menu. Highlight the sound you want and select Options/Use tone/Set as ringing tone. To set an image as your wallpaper, open it in My Items/Images and choose Options/Use image/Set as wallpaper. 2. Games Go to Menu/Apps/Options/Downloads, and select Game downloads. Choose a game, and follow the instructions to download. Select it in Applications/Games to start playing (press Options/Move to move it to another folder).

7. Other services and functions MMS Postcard Now you can send a photo from your mobile phone as an actual postcard. Go to Menu/Messaging/Create message/MMS Postcard. Enter the name and address (you can press to use information from your Contacts). Then press Options/Insert to add a photo or take a new one. Swisscom Mobile will have it printed on a postcard and sent by mail.
Phone hints 1. Keypad lock To lock the main keys, quickly press
then *. To unlock them, quickly press
then *.
2. Silent mode Briefly press (at any time) the Power key to bring up the Profiles menu. Choose Silent and press OK. To restore sound, do the same and choose General. You can also press and hold the # key to turn silent mode on or off. 3. Flight mode Also in the Profiles menu is Flight mode, which turns off the mobile network connection. Choose this mode to use your Nokia 6234 when normal mobile phones must be switched off (on planes, for example).

4. Music player You can download music from Vodafone live!, or transfer it to your mobile phone from your PC using the Nokia Audio Manager application (see User Guide for your mobile phone). Then go to Menu/Media/Music player, and use the controls on the display to play your tracks.
