Pam manages Vacation Rentals in the Show Low area of the White Mountains. She is also a fellow rider, so she’s aware of concerns like road conditions to a property or being able to park where you can see your bike at night. Whether you are looking for a weekend getaway or a month-long escape to the high country, give Pam a call to book a biker-friendly ‘stay-cation’ in the White Mountains. See her ad on page 7 for contact information and more details. Ignacio Bike Week is a 100% not-for-profit, all volunteer event; with monies raised being used for community improvement projects. Even with some of the annual rallies canceling due to the economy, this event just keeps getting bigger. It is such a fantastic area for riding. If you have any chance of getting up there, either for a few days or for the whole week, you will have a great time. Hey, if anybody out there is in need of a Steel Building for any purpose - industrial, garage, etc there are some killer deals available. Check out page 4 for contact information. We had a lot to say last month about Motorcycle Awareness and cagers doing the wrong things in regard to sharing the road with motorcyclists. I wish we had a picture of this one joker. He had his foot up on the dashboard, steering with his knee, while he’s texting. All while driving down the Trail. Do these people even HAVE a brain in their heads or is it just wrapped around empty space? ARRRRGGHHHH!!! So we thought it would be nice to mention those cagers who are actually noticing us. We’ve all seen them in the turn lane. You can almost see the debate going on. Are we far enough away or too close? We’re wondering, will they jackrabbit across the road in front of us or wait their turn? When we realize that YES, they’ve seen us and are NOT going to pull out in front of us… it’s a great feeling! So, yes, there are cagers out there who are paying attention and do know how to share the road with us. Think about giving them a wave, nod, smile, thumbs up, etc to say ‘thank you’ as you roll by. There have been some improvements made to the AZ Rider online calendar. It is now open to have events posted by you, our readers. Event organizers can add a party or rally and it goes up immediately, with a copy of the information being automatically sent to us. From that notice we update our hardcopy edition. So please, let the run coordinator, activities director, or similar officer of your organizations know that this tool is available to you, to help get the word out about your upcoming events even faster. Check it out at: http://azridersouthwest.com/calendar.html - then follow the link, select your date, and follow the prompts to add an event. That’s all the space we have for this time. So we’ll sign off for now and see you out on the road. Until then, Keep your butts on your putts! Service members need to enroll PROMPTLY and do it NOW by following these steps: Golfer At The Dentist • Obtain a copy of your service medical records prior to discharge. Do not take any shortcuts when separating and do this immediately. Any idea of hurrying to get home may cost you time and money should you require VA Healthcare at any time in the future. • A veteran has two years, after separation, to apply for medical conditions that are a result of their service in the military. After two years the process becomes more difficult. • If you require medical assistance from the VA after separation/discharge, bring with you a copy of your medical records, a copy of your DD214, and two forms of picture identification. • Any injury or illness incurred while serving on active duty as a regular, reservist, or Federalized member of the National Guard needs to be noted in your medical records. • Enroll in the VA IMMEDIATELY. Do Not Procrastinate!! Know your rights and your responsibilities. If you are not sure, ASK-ASK-ASK-ASKASK!!! Ensure that your transition is smooth. Know what you need to do, and DO IT! • Join a veterans service organization - American Legion, DAV, Rolling Thunder®, VFW, AMVETS, etc. Reader Index IT’S YOUR DUTY TO DO SO! I have two buddies sitting out in my car waiting for us to go play golf, so forget about the anesthetic, just pull the tooth, and be done with it. We have a 10am tee time at the best golf course in town and it’s 9:30 already. I don’t have time to wait for the anesthetic to work!’ The dentist thought to himself, ‘My goodness, this is surely a very brave man asking to have his tooth pulled without using anything to kill the pain.’ So the dentist asks him, ‘Which tooth is it, sir?’ The man turned to his wife and said, ‘Open your mouth Honey, and show him...’ Evil Twin Customer Appreciation Day Wedding Bells For Charity Scavenger Hunt hosted by MMMC Advertiser Review: Tap House Rides & Gatherings LDMC Goldrush Run 2009 Paralyzed Veterans of America Poker Run Scooter T pg pg pg pg pg pg pg pg 4 5 5 7 7 8 9 9 CycleFest and AZ Bike Week Biker Astrology Tiger Tales East Valley Hard Ass Run Calendar & Subscription Form East Valley Motorcycle Safety ... Plt. Sgt. USMC, RVN Evil Twin Custom Cycles Customer Appreciation Day 4 On Saturday April 11 Robert Shinn of Evil Twin Custom Cycles hosted a Customer Appreciation Day at his store, located at 2534 West Broadway Road in Mesa. In our neck of the woods, we woke up to a day best spent enjoyed with warm blankets and old movies…. Gray and rainy…. The weather report said rain and mid-60’s for the day and the Weather Channel showed 30% chance of rain. Make that 100% in our area. So we called over to Evil Twin to find out what was happening in regard to their party. The report was No Rain and the Party’s ON! Cool! What do those weather guys know? So we hopped on the bike and made our way into Mesa to see what we would see. And what a nice setup they had. Of course the parking lot in front of the store was all about parking. But alongside the building there was a tent for the band, and booths with vendors, a food station, plenty of tables and chairs… It was well done. There were a half-dozen or more vendors offering different types of goods, such as the Matco Tool truck, a booth with some great tiedye items, a variety of jewelry including some beautiful work by silversmith Hal Brown, ‘Renegade Lights’, frozen spark plugs, apparel, accessories, sunglasses, knives, leather goods, and Tattooing by Tiffany. The grills were fired up and there were dogs and burgers cooking, plus beer and sodas to wash ‘em down; all free, courtesy of Evil Twin. Along with the free food and beverages, Robert also offered special pricing on parts and services to express his appreciation of the support he has been shown since taking over at Evil Twin. The band ‘Noodles’ was keeping people entertained, and it was cool to see Robert sitting in. They play on Sunday afternoons over at the Sail Inn, in Tempe. Along with the many independent riders who came out, there were several organizations represented including Spartan Riders MC, Devils Own MC, ABATE, American Legion Riders, and MMA. AZ Rider click title to visit website noted that it was raining during set up in the morning, the skies cleared long enough for the party, and just about 15 minutes before they had everything packed up afterwards, the clouds opened up again. Sounds like some good karma there! We had a good time and saw a lot of people with whom we always enjoy visiting. Evil Twin Custom Cycles is a full service shop where you can get a basic oil change all the way up to a complete bike build. Go to www.eviltwincustomcycle.com/ on the web to check them out. When your bike is ready for service, an upgrade, or a rebuild, give Robert or Danny a call at 480-784-0040. Please be sure and tell them you read about them here in AZ Rider Motorcycle News. Bruce & Betsy Congratulations to Robert on a successful day. In speaking with him later on, we learned that numbers were down a bit due to the rain threat, but there was still a good amount of people and he was happy with how the event went. AZ Rider Wedding Bells for Charity Sunday April 5, 2009 was the date of a very happy occasion, the wedding of 5 Charity Stuart and her beau, Joe LaCarte. They tied the knot at Rock Springs Café in Black Canyon City, surrounded by friends and loved ones. It was a beautiful sunset ceremony, officiated by Pastor Cliff Stringham of the Christian Motorcyclists Association. The wedding party was in a black and white theme; which was very striking. Charity & Joey’s son Shea looked adorable in his tuxedo. The reception lasted late into the night with music, dancing, games, and good times; strong ingredients for special memories that they can cherish forever. Thank you, Charity & Joe for inviting us to your special day. We are Charity and Joseph LaCarte pleased and honored to share your happy news with the motorcycling community. Our best wishes to you both for many, many happy years together. Betsy & Bruce Scavenger Hunt Hosted by Medieval Maidens MC April 4th, 2009… My daughter Amanda thought it was risky business holding a run during Bike Week. Aren’t they competing for similar players? Yes and no. The similarities are few, they’re human and they ride motorcycles in Arizona. Beyond that is a world of dif- ferences. They know it, I know it, and before the day’s over darling – you’ll know it, too. The Medieval Maidens gambled and won, in my book. Just a week prior, I’d attended a Treasure Hunt. So I wondered what the differences would be. About the only things that the two runs shared were that both had bikers and both had a list of 60 items. The rest was different. I liked the way the Maidens set up their event. The party was held at Charley’s Place, at 4324 W Thunderbird, in Glendale. No fuss or fanfare, no band – just the jukebox. I got to talk to people and really hear them talk back. We all did. Wow – a run where people could talk without shouting over the music. The Maidens signed people up in team form (4 people in a team). There were 7 teams playing. The Maidens asked that you bring a digital camera. That way you could take a picture of an item or items without buying everything (cost conscious) and less to haul around. A lot of the items requested were photos of the team with interesting People or Things; such as with a fire truck, with a Hooter’s waitress in full uniform, a nudie picture, at the Waffle House, with Jack & his Box, on the Burger King Slide, on their bikes, of a member getting his or her hair cut, and with the Medieval Maidens MC President. Other items sought were for fun, such as a Whoopie Cushion, a jock, a dog biscuit, motion lotion, soap from a hotel, a cartoon bandaid, a colored tooth pick, a disco cassette, a peso, and an AriZona quarter. Then, of course, there were the items supporting the club, purple nail polish, purple shoe laces, a support sticker, and a flyer from a previous event. One by one, the teams returned. Though I don’t smoke, I sat on the patio listening to the different teams talking about today’s adventure. At one point, I sat across from a biker who could have been the twin of Larry the Cable Guy. I went back inside to hear about the winners. Team 6: Paul, Ernie, Cecil H. & Billy, all 4 are members of the notorious “UMF” (Ugly Mother F@#$ers) Riding Group. They collected the most items, 54/60, and won $80 for their bootie. Those guys chatted up a storm about the overly helpful $ales gals from a local WalMart. Paul also won the 50/50 prize of $75. As Amanda and I were leaving, I asked her – do you know the difference yet? Yes, Mom I do. They live and love the biker life, and they’re the best kind of friends you could have. On behalf of the Medieval Maidens, thank you to everyone who came out and supported this event. I hope to see you all again next year. Until our paths cross and our shadows meet, I wish you well. AZRiderSouthwest.com AZ Rider Advertiser Review: Ernie’s Tap House Ernie’s Tap House, located in Fountain Hills is a bikerfriendly restaurant / bar that is actually owned by a biker. So right off the bat you know that you are not only patronizing a good establishment, but you’re supporting someone’s business within the riding community. What a great combination! Ernie has been the Tap House owner for just about two years now. He and his son run it, offering high quality food and a friendly atmosphere. Moving to AriZona from Michigan in 1986, Ernie’s an old-time biker who’s been riding since he was a kid. He’s been a competitive driver since 1974 and earned his livelihood as a drag strip racer. He has piloted Superstock Ds, wheelie cars, AFX cars, and top fuel dragsters over the years. Basically, if it goes fast, he’s into it. His love of racing is evident, with the walls of the Tap House displaying photos of some of his cars, and other mementos. And you can be sure there is at least one interesting story to go with each of them. Ernie is active in the motorcycling community. He’s a regular sponsor for the annual “Ride for a Heart” Poker Run for the American Heart Association. Talk to him about being a stop on your upcoming ride or poker run. He is also a member of the American Legion Riders, and Vets get an automatic 10% discount by showing their American Legion, VFW, or other veteran’s ID. Tuesday Night every week is Bike Night and Ladies Night. Ride your bike in and get 20% off your total bill. Plus there are drink specials like $1.50 domestic drafts and well drinks, and $3 Margaritas. Ernie’s Tap House is a nice size and comfortable… newly painted and re-decorated. It’s a local neighborhood type bar, family friendly, and kid friendly. Activities include darts, jukebox, and numerous big screen TVs; although Ernie specifies that this is not a sports bar. There is a variety of programming to watch. There’s plenty of room for parking. And he’s actually had big motorcycles painted into some of the slots to indicate Motorcycle Parking. It looks very cool. Very biker friendly. They offer music every Friday and Saturday nights, and Free Texas Hold’em Poker Monday – Thursday. On the first and last Saturdays of the month they hold Karaoke Night, with a Trivia game, prizes, and a cash giveaway. Entertainment on First Fridays is the Music Studio Student Jam, and the place gets packed. At the bar there is an average of 21-23 beers available between domestic and import labels. There are great Happy Hour offers Monday –Friday between 2-6pm. The kitchen is open Monday-Saturday 11a-10pm, and Sunday 11a-9pm. Carry out is available. Ernie prides himself on the quality of the food served, and you can tell. They prepare certified Angus beef. The menu includes a lot of what you would expect, such as sandwiches, burgers, salads, and pizza. Everything is cooked as ordered; so it takes a few more minutes to get your food, but it shows 7 in the flavors. Each time we’ve eaten there, it has been delicious. The Friday night dinner special is Prime Rib, from 5-9pm or until it’s gone. Don’t arrive too late; it has become very popular. Be sure to get an Ernie’s Tap House punch card when you eat there, so you can collect credits toward future meals. Every Sunday morning there is a ride out from the Tap House, with kickstands up at 10am; however many are there to go. Ernie’s Tap House in Fountain Hills is located just a block away from the Fountain, on Parkview Ave, off of Saguaro. It is easy to find. Their ad with us includes a map, if needed. You’ll pass some other watering holes along the way, but we feel it’s worth the short extra distance to Ernie’s for the service and atmosphere. We think you’ll agree. You will feel welcome and be well fed at Ernie’s Tap House. Give ‘em a call at 480-837-5220 or stop by. Either way, please let them know you read about them here in AZ Rider Motorcycle News. It was great to see Bill, Prez to the Lost Dutchman M/C 13th Annual Goldrush Run 2009 Lost Dutchman and others as well. To my amazement, I ran into a great lady whom I hadn’t seen in 5 years, Sparky! I took off for The Gym at 2510 E Hunt Hwy, (in the Johnson Ranch area, southeast of Queen Creek) for the first draw of the poker cards. Drawing a King of Diamonds, I thought that was a good start; but silly me, I missed a stop on the way. The next stop should have been to the River Bottom on Hwy. 79 in Florence, but I went to the 3rd stop at Uncle Bear’s in Queen Creek. There I picked up a 4 of spades ~ that changed the idea of a winning hand. At The Rock Sports Bar in Mesa, I drew two cards to cover the missed stop, a pair of 6’s. Yippie! Then I rolled on to the event destination at Rockin’ R Ranch at 6136 E. Baseline Rd., Mesa. From what I could tell, there would be a lot of competition for the lousiest hand this day. Arriving around 2 pm, I noticed the parking lot really wasn’t full yet, but bikers were starting to come in. There was plenty to do by checking out vendors and their products on display. The bike show started when Rockin’ R Ranch opened @ 10a and judging was done @ 2pm. There were chances to win off of the raffle ticket which was announced at intervals from 11a till 3pm and a 50/50 lady with a coffee can and a big roll of tickets tempting all with a chance to win half the dough. The meal provided by the Rockin’ R Ranch was tasty hamburgers and   hot dogs hot off the BBQ with Texas style beans and chips; a great way to cap the appetite after a nice ride. Around 3pm the winners were announced. A lady holding the high hand won the prize of pure gold. Congratulations to her. Congratulations also to the bike show winners. There are too many to acknowledge, but two need to be mentioned, Bob “Roach” won the Best Custom and Ron Hartman, the Antique Class. The wet T shirt contest, believe it or not, was the best I have seen in quite a while. I think the guys would agree with me on that. Congratulations go to the lady that won that, and also the 50/50 winner. Approximately 380+ brothers and sisters of the wind came to this event and it was a nice crowd. As usual, it was great to see old friends as well as making new. There were two sisters visiting family here in the US, all the way from Albania. They both participated in the Wet T contest and were a lot o fun. It was great to see Sue doing the run shirts for the Lost Dutchman M/C. She is Lady to AZ Rider Brent, Prez to the Phoenix Chapter of the Spartan Riders MC. If you need some silk screening done, she will fix you up. You can get a hold of her by email at: [email protected]. Tell her Sidekick sent ya. As happens with every event, the time comes to wind things up. We took the group photos of the Lost Dutchman M/C and wished everyone safe trips back home. A big thanks goes to the Rockin ‘R Ranch, as well as to the sponsors. This year What’s The Point – Part II By Scooter T Copyright 2009 Last month I left you with a few WHAT’S THE POINT observations. Many more have come to mind which will be shared. These may have crossed your mind also at one time or another. ✒ We own a bike in order to experience the freedom which includes the need for speed yet Harley’s have some sort of restrictor/regulator that does not allow you to really go wild and let go. WHAT’S THE POINT OF EVEN HAVING A BIKE? ✒ Every weekend, there are rides for charities. I sponsored a clothing drive run in order to provide ladies at dance establishments with clothing so they wouldn’t have to walk around half naked at work. I personally wanted to see if I had made a difference in their lives and went to a few establishments only to discover that they still walked around half-naked. WHAT’S THE POINT IN TRYING TO HELP THE CLOTHING IMPAIRED POPULATION? ✒ There are still avid bikers who prefer the rigid suspension bikes. Of course, they are all experiencing medical problems and wear kidney belts. WHAT’S THE POINT? ✒ Approximately 10% of Harley sales are to women. The purpose of having a bike is to attract ladies who want to ride on the back of your bike and will snuggle up to you to hold on. If they now ride their own bikes WHAT’S THE POINT? ✒ Anything north of the Mason-Dixon Line experiences snow, sleet, and cold non biker-friendly weather during winter. I’ve seen shirts with Fairbanks or Nome, Alaska printed on them. Imagine having a bike in an area in which riding season is 3 days a year. There are dealers in Oregon and Washington State where it rains every day and the annual rainfall is 100 inches. If you have a Harley in these areas – WHAT’S THE POINT IF YOU CAN’T RIDE? ✒ I’ve noticed more and more people drinking Lite Beer, smoking Lite or Ultra-Lite Cigarettes and consuming diet sodas. If you’re going to drink or smoke, why not go all of the way instead of being a wuss? In keeping with the Lite Era of Correctness, it is rumored that Harley will be making a Harley Lite, a 1 cylinder scooter with a sound emission of 2 db. – WHAT’S THE POINT? ✒ Being a Viet Nam Era Veteran and motorcycle rights supporter for years, I was hoping to be appointed as Secretary of Transportation by the Obama Administration in order to be an advocate for motorcyclists. I was immediately disqualified for the position when the search team discovered that I have paid my taxes every year since turning 18 in the ‘60’s – WHAT’S THE POINT IN PAYING TAXES? So, WHAT’S THE POINT? The point of all of this is to question inconsistencies and hypocrisies around us and in government. Spring in AriZona… it’s a Beautiful time to ride in the Valley of the Sun. The desert is in bloom thanks to the winter rains. We’ve got warm days and cool nights. It’s this biker’s idea of perfection. Mother Nature played some tricks on us though… Giving us temps in the 70s & 80s, no rain, clear skies… but the word of the day, if not the week, was ‘Wind”. We spoke with one pilot who was on a freeway overpass when he got hit by a gust that made him feel like he was going to launch. As usual, AZ Bike Week and CycleFest offered pretty much something for everyone. There were all the traditional rides, offering plenty of opportunity to support some excellent beneficiaries. There were outings to ‘see and be seen’. There was some great music, by familiar favorites. We had a good time at CycleFest. There was a lot of the ‘same stuff, new year’ thing going on, AZ Rider but it’s fun to walk around, watch people, see what new stuff the vendors have to offer, and catch up with friends. CycleFest strikes us much like a state fair for bikers. Everyone seemed to be having fun. We observed a wider range of ages this year. It seemed like there were more tykes running around. I guess they’re finally old enough to come out with the folks to the festival instead of having to stay home with a sitter. It was good to see a younger generation of riders, and perhaps the next one coming up. We do miss some of the shows of years past… such as the stunt and trials rider exhibitions, the Wall of Death type stuff. It seems that the focus has become even more so on ‘shopping as entertainment’, with few alternatives. Saturday night’s auction for the AZ Bike Week Charities was really cool! Some of the more notable items being bid on were a U2 signed guitar that went for $3000, an Aerosmith signed guitar for $3400, and an AC/DC signed guitar that topped the night at $4200. As we were heading home on the freeway, we were reminded of a fuel additive that makes bikes go REALLY fast… It’s called Jagermeister. We sure hope those folks got home all right. Yow! Next year’s CycleFest at WestWorld in Scottsdale will take place April 711. See you there. Bruce & Betsy click title to visit website GENERAL DENTISTRY SERVICES Stephen J. AZ Rider 11 June 2009 Astrology 12 by Kathi Calahan It’s easier this month to develop better communication skills with your loved ones. Let’s take a look at each sign’s obstacles and solutions to a healthy relationship when it comes to talking with each other. ARIES: Your biggest obstacle is that the only thing you find interesting to talk with others about is YOU. Drop the I-Me-Me-Me song and start talking about the other person. Part of a good relationship means being heard and if you were to be honest, you’d know that your lover or previous lovers felt unheard. You are quick-witted and sometimes think you know what he or she is going to say before they say it. Stop interrupting and listen. Lucky Numbers 4, 7, 51, 50 40, 31 TAURUS: You have strong convictions in what you know and believe, which your lover enjoys. But your slowness in making a decision drives them crazy. To relieve the stress of your partner, tell him or her that you’ll think about it and get back to them with an answer. Preferably the same day! Because you are so fixed in your beliefs, you may have trouble hearing others who don’t share the same convictions. It’s a big world full of many views. Lighten up. Lucky Numbers 45, 14, 21, 12, 8, 6 GEMINI: Happy birthday, you social butterflies! The angels danced the day you were born. One of your biggest obstacles in communication is gossip. Don’t say anything behind someone’s back that you wouldn’t say to their face. And while you’re standing around the office water cooler, don’t put up with anyone else gossiping maliciously either. The old saying is true, “If you don’t have something nice to say, don’t say anything at all.” This month’s goal - listen as much as you speak. Lucky Numbers 22, 16, 8, 4, 6, 12 CANCER: The family communication skills you grew up with may no longer be relevant today. This month take a careful look at how you learned to exclude others who were not in your special circle. Perhaps you shut down & wouldn’t look them in the eye. There’s a tendency for Cancer’s to lean toward exclusivity and ignore those who don’t fit their criteria. For you, the world can be your family. Not all Cancers put down roots and kept them with their family of origin. Don’t repeat the same mistake with your lover. Lucky Numbers 7, 5, 4, 13, 11, 16 LEO: Louder is not better. Save your shouting for the stage and ball park. While you may enjoy maintaining leadership in your love life, your goal is to learn to speak lovingly to your partner. This means not shouting and hearing with words of love. One of the best insights you can learn in communicating with others is that most arguments stem from fear. Your job is to learn to speak from a loving space and be patient enough to hear your lover’s point of view. Just because he or she disagrees with you does not mean they don’t love you. Lucky Numbers 45, 47, 20, 29, 13, 6 SAGITTARIUS: OMG, when will you ever learn to keep your foot out of your mouth? Just because it’s true does not mean you have to speak every single thought that comes into your head. Learn a little discretion. Your lover may or may not be ready to hear the TRUTH, AS SAGITTARIUS SEES IT. Instead, if you’ve got something to say that may hurt his or her feelings, learn to slow down and say it this way, “When you...., I feel.... I would feel better if instead you would.... So simple. No blaming. No hurt feelings and your foot gets to stay on the ground where it belongs. Lucky Numbers 4, 12, 18, 48, 6, 13 VIRGO: You never miss a trick. For you listening and reading between the lines is more important than what your lover actually says. However, your need for perfection makes it hard for you to forgive your sweetie’s mistakes. Throw perfection out the window. It doesn’t exist. Instead, talk things over together when there are problems and learn from your mistakes. Both of you. There’s a fabulous group out there called MARRIAGE BOOT CAMP that probably has many Virgos as counselors. They hear things most people miss and are very solutions oriented. Lucky Numbers 16, 12, 9, 8, 40, 50 CAPRICORN: Stop talking about your work. Your lover wants to hear that he or she looks good, or smells good, or cooked a nice meal. Get into bed and start talking about why you first fell in love with each other. Capricorns are known as the stuffed shirts of the zodiac. Harumph, harumph. You have great business communication skills, but you really need to stop bringing your work talk into your cozy bedroom love nest. Because you have great observation skills, you know what you love about your partner. Now you just have to get the words out of your mouth and into their ear. Lucky Numbers 4, 1, 22, 29, 19, 11 LIBRA: All you’ve ever wanted in your communication with your lover is grace, beauty, kindness and good manners. You have a kind and gentle heart and when things get ugly verbally, you find it disgusting. Sometime, in the name of peace, you’ll give up your own convictions just to get along with your honey. The danger of that, however, is that you start to feel like a doormat and blame him or her. The truth is, you need better boundaries and an agreement to moderate the voice levels and take turns talking and listening. Don’t be bullied in your communication. You’re a smart cookie and must learn to stand up to the steam rollers. Lucky Numbers 19, 27, 17, 31, 30, 28 AQUARIUS: Do people say your ideas are strange or unusual? Well, they are. You guys and gals are the brainiacs of the zodiac and I hear “Smart” is the new turn on. So, communicate to your lover about such odd things as what it would be like to have sex onboard a UFO. You look for a love partner who can keep up with you intellectually. Brainstorming is a real turn on for you but beware a tendency to intellectualize your love relationship and remember to include some feelings in your communication. Feelings, you know, like happy, sexy, excited, comfortable. Those are FEELING words. Learn some. Lucky Numbers 60, 54, 57, 34, 29, 8 SCORPIO: Communication is not a tool to control others. Shocking, but true! You’re known to stop speaking entirely or, on the flip side, hog the conversation until you wear your lover out. Come on, grow up! No one loves more deeply or passionately than you, so why would you jeopardize a good thing by bullying someone you’re supposed to love? Instead of trying to power over your lover, use your extensive healing gifts to solve the problem. For every difficult area in your relationship, there is a solution. Your ‘all or nothing’ attitude is not helping. Lucky Numbers 55, 57, 19, 30, 16, 12 PISCES: You are the zodiac’s psychic lover. Frequently you think words are unnecessary. You would prefer to merge auras and automatically assume your lover knows what you’re thinking about. They may or may not. Instead, try to speak the words of love which are so universal and spiritual that sometimes it’s hard to give a voice to them. Try anyway. For you, your gift to a marriage or relationship is to bring into awareness the spiritual or soul connection between two people. Your love world is gossamer and imagination-filled. Fantasy is your middle name. Lucky Numbers 14, 55, 12, 3, 9, 5 Bio: Kathi Calahan has been a professional astrologer, psychic, & smartass for more than 28 years. America’s Injury Lawyers Who Ride A motorcycle accident is undoubtedly an unfortunate and inconvenient mishap. In the event of a serious injury, you’ll likely be whisked away by the ambulance, leaving your bike behind. Even if your injuries are less severe and don’t require a trip to the hospital, you must still attend to your damaged motorcycle. Whether the police, a friend, or you make arrangements with a local service to have your bike towed and stored, it’s important to know the resulting storage expense. Your storage choices include your home, the towing company’s outdoor facility, or a motorcycle repair shop. Assuming that your intentions are to have the bike either repaired or replaced, it’s usually a wise decision to send it to a motorcycle shop that can write the repair estimate and make the necessary repairs. Because your motorcycle will require an estimate, keep- www.LawTigers.com ing it at your house or at a tow yard will likely require a second transportation charge and will ultimately delay the entire process. When insurance companies are involved, the number of days that your damaged motorcycle remains in storage will vary. Once an estimate is written, the insurance company will determine whether the bike will be totaled or repaired. You then have the right to dispute this decision and/or the amount that they are willing to pay to total or repair your motorcycle. When taking all of the steps of this process into consideration, you may incur several days to several months worth of storage charges. To avoid outrageous storage fees, research the costs up-front. Contact several local motorcycle repair shops and ask them if they provide a free grace period, and if so, under what conditions. In addition, verify their daily storage rate, whether it’s fixed or adjustable, and whether or not there are certain situations, such as when you are waiting for an insurance adjuster’s response to your dispute, where the daily charges will not accrue. It also may be a good idea to check with your preferred dealership. On occasion, if there is a previous relationship or if they are guaranteed your business to repair the bike, dealerships will waive or reduce storage costs. Prices will likely vary from shop to shop, so never make the assumption that they are all comparable. In some states, maximum daily storage fees are government mandated. To determine if such a law exists in your state, contact your local legislative representative. As a rule-of-thumb, prices can range from $5 to $25 per day, with no limitations. AZ Rider East Valley Hard Ass Run This Ain’t Your Grandpa’s Poker Run! This annual ride takes bikers on a 300+ mile tour through some of the best back roads in Arizona. The route is kept secret, with riders being warned to come prepared for all climates Arizona has to offer and bring plenty of water and sun screen. This is a long ride, and those who make it to the end are rewarded with a run shirt and run pin, at the last stop. Our thanks go to Mary K, State Secretary of ABATE, for sending us this recap of the ride and festivities. “ABATE of Arizona East Valley Chapter’s 7th Annual Hard Ass Run was held on Saturday, May 16th, 2009. Sign in was from7:30- 9am at the American Legion Post 26, located at 505 W. 2nd Ave. in Mesa. There were approx. 70 participants that went on this mystery ride, stopping first at Crosswinds Restaurant at the Payson Airport, then following Hwy. 87 up onto The Mogollon Rim. We turned onto Lake Mary Road and made a stop at the Mormon Lake Lodge Saloon. We then rode up Lake Mary Road into Flagstaff and then down into Oak Creek Canyon, stopping at the Olde Sedona Bar & Grill. From there, we rode on SR260 across the Verde Valley back to Hwy. 87 on The Rim and back down into Payson, stopping at The Buffalo Bar & Grill. “The last stop and end-party was held at the American Legion Post 58 at 16837 E. Parkview Ave., Fountain Hills. It’s located up on the hill, {across the street from the Tap House}, right across from The Fountain, and has a large covered patio with great views and padded rocking patio chairs that everyone really enjoyed after a long day’s ride. “The band, Storm Watch, was terrific and a pleasure to listen to. Mary K. won $110 in the 50/50, and donated $60 back to ABATE. Ralph, the “Best Hand” winner of $250, was not present at announcement time, but was advised of his winning. Included in the entry fee was entrance into Arizona Bike Week’s CycleFest for Friday’s events at WestWorld including a concert by legendary rocker Eddie Money at the HandleBar Saloon. We received the following note from Jennifer Sturino at Superstition Harley-Davidson, located on the Trail in Apache Junction, to follow up on this event: “The 6th Annual Fire Fighters Poker Run kicked off at Superstition HD and took riders on an almost 200 mile ride of the most beautiful country Arizona has to offer. Along the way riders stopped at The Copper Parrot in Globe (where the Globe Fire Dept. displayed a giant American Flag on one of their ladder trucks for all the riders to pass under), continued on to Boston’s Lake House Grill at Roosevelt Lake, and then on to Jake’s Corner Bar (where Texas Roadhouse provided lunch) before ending up at WestWorld for Cyclefest 2009. 1396 riders participated in this year’s event and helped us to raise almost $25,000 which will benefit East Valley Firefighter Charities. It is through the help of our volunteers and the continued support of the community and our sponsors that we have been able to make this event such a resounding success year after year. I would like to personally thank each and every one of the riders who came out to take part in this year’s event. “Additional information and pictures of the event will be available at www.FireFightersPokerRun.com.” Speeding in South Dakota A Madison , SD policeman had a perfect spot to watch for speeders, but wasn’t getting many. Then he discovered the problem- a 12- year-old boy was standing up the road with a hand painted sign, which read ‘RADAR TRAP AHEAD’. The officer also found the boy had an accomplice who was down the road with a sign reading ‘TIPS’ and a bucket full of money. (And we used to just sell lemonade!) A motorist was mailed a picture of his car speeding through an automated radar post in Sioux Falls, SD. A $40 speeding ticket was included. Being cute, he sent the police department a picture of $40. The police responded with another mailed photo of handcuffs. A young woman was pulled over for speeding. A South Dakota State Trooper walked to her car window, flipping open his ticket book, she said, “I bet you are going to sell me a ticket to the State Trooper’s Ball.” He replied, “South Dakota State Troopers don’t have balls.” There was a moment of silence. He then closed his book, got back in his patrol car and left. 13 grateful to Shorty and his crash truck/trailer that followed the run. Many thanks go to the volunteers that made this a success, as well as to the participants. Your generosity is used to help fight for your motorcycling freedom and rights. All Proceeds of this event benefit A.B.A.T.E. of Arizona.” The next East Valley Chapter event will be The Spaghetti Feed on Saturday, June 6th from 6-9pm. All you can eat for $5 bucks! There will be entertainment, games, door prizes, and more. See the ABATE website at www.abateofaz.org/ or The MasterLink for more information. Mary K. A man and a woman were asleep like two innocent babies.... Suddenly, at 3 o’clock in the morning, a loud noise came from outside. The woman, bewildered, jumped up from the bed and yelled at the man, “Holy Shit. That must be my husband!” So the man jumped out of the bed; scared and naked jumped out the window. He smashed himself on the ground, ran through a thorn bush and to his car as fast as he could go. A few minutes later he returned and went up to the bedroom and screamed at the woman, “I AM your husband!” The woman yelled back, “Yeah, then why were you running?!” American Choppers Extending Our $55/hour Labor Rate Through June ‘09 Swap Meet 433 W Main St; Mesa, AZ 85201 ✥ 480-827-1868 Third Sunday* Every Month * June 14 {due to Fathers Day} New & Used Parts Vendors Arrive 6am, Open to Public 7am Kirk’s Sports Bar will be open Call For More Details 220 West Main St Mesa, AZ 85201 480-833-4683 Under New Ownership 14 Run Calendar June 2009 6/5-6 {Fr-Sa} 18th annual Run to the Border with the Southern AZ Harley Riders MC at the Esplendor Resort in Rio Rico. FMI: 480-833-4683 {H} Buy / Sell / Trade at the AZ Rider Online Classifieds AZ Rider East Valley Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Event On May 17, a group of concerned East Valley bikers hosted a Motorcycle Awareness Event at the Superstition Springs Mall Wal-Mart, located at Superstition Springs Blvd & Southern Ave in Mesa. We want to thank Suzi B for sending us the following report on how the day went…. “We set up several adjoined booths in the northwest corner of Wal-Mart park- ing lot at 8am. Our main focus was to heighten safety and awareness through parents and their children. When riding in cars, it is often the kids that notice motorcycles on the road and it is they who point us out to the parents while driving. We gave away bottled water, tee shirts, bumper stickers, posters, and lots of smaller items like balloons, toys, pencils, and pins geared towards the kids; all free to the public. A highlight of the event was the opportunity for kids to have their picture taken on a bike or trike which was immediately processed; so that they could have their picture in a matter of a couple of minutes. The pictures went over very     15 well, the kids were absolutely thrilled. Quite a few parents also asked for pictures of themselves. I think we met a bunch of future riders during this campaign. “Several volunteers manned the booths which gave us the unique opportunity to talk with almost everyone individually that came through the event. This also helps support a friendlier image of bikers in general. There was no lack of enthusiasm with our volunteers this year. Everyone was very eager to promote awareness on Arizona roads and talked freely with all who stopped by the event. We closed up around 3pm, having given away most of what was brought. “We wish to send out our heartfelt thanks to East Valley A.B.A.T.E. members Redbone, Margie & Joe Furrucci, Jeff & Alex Gorall, Mary Kay, Robert Vasquez & Jack Batty for their time, energy, donations, and        devotion to making the Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Event a huge success. We also want to express our appreciation to Phoenix Trikes for their awesome display of absolutely wicked trikes, The Children’s Crisis Center, DJ Dennis Draper, and Sunshine Acres, Dolores Horvath. A big thank you also goes out to American Legion Riders for their help and support and Brothers of the Third Wheel, Superstition Chapter for moving their entire meeting to Wal-Mart parking lot so that they could be there to assist, MMA SRD members Willy & Mike Shearhart, Belch, Tex Myers and his lovely wife. A very special thank you goes out to the people most instrumental in this project; and Kim & Ray Vaillancourt without whom none of this would have been possible.” Congratulations on a successful day. Thank you all for your efforts on behalf of AriZona’s bikers. staff      HAMC Johnny Angel’s 50th Anniversary On Sunday April 5, the Hell’s Angels MC Cave Creek Crew hosted a 50th Anniversary Party Poker Run for their brother Johnny Angel. If you wanted to ride with the pack you could sign-in at Steel Horse Saloon in Phoenix. This gala’s final stop was at the Buffalo Chip Saloon in Cave Creek AZ. Members from all the different clubs that make up globe. It was truly a day to walk amongst some of the Hell’s Angels ‘Rebel Best’, if you’re into that kind of thing. During my limited stay, I saw many Hell’s Angels members from all over the USA: Cave Creek, Tucson, Phoenix, and Mesa, {of course} plus Nomads, Illinois, Indiana, New York, New Jersey, Nevada, and California. Global reps included Austria, England, Netherlands, Switzerland, World, Singen, Luxembourg, Finland, and British Columbia. Attendees also included a lot of independent riders and some notables who weren’t there. The place was filled with my favorite kind of bikers (Old School) and it was a fantastic the AZ Confederation of Motorcycle Clubs were there to pay their respects, as well as members from County Boys MC (Calif), Devil Dolls MC (Calif), Narbonas Navajo Nat. (4 Corners), and Gotham Skulls MC (NY). I had to leave early, so there may have been other clubs that I didn’t see. In addition to Johnny Angel, there was a celebrity list of HAMC members attending from areas across the day. Congratulations, Johnny Angel, on your 50th Anniversary.
