RAM Notes Summary  Random Access Memory (acronym is RAM)  RAM is temporary memory that is much faster than secondary storage devices. RAM is cleared when you reboot or shutdown.  RAM is primary storage – meaning, it is used by the CPU ultimately before the secondary storage. Programs and data get stored in RAM and the CPU works with that.  Doubling your RAM can speed up your computer significantly.  Most programs don’t utilize more than 8GB.  RAM speed is measured in MHz  Using two sticks of RAM in tandem is called dual channel. They work faster together.  Bandwidth of RAM is measured in MB/s. This can be calculated by multiplying the MHz by 8, or is the actual value given with the RAM (PC312800 is 12800 MB/s).  Overclocking RAM makes it run faster than the factory defaults. The caveat is that it runs hotter than usual. This can cause issues.  DDR3 uses less electricity.  There are two form factors of RAM: SODIMM (laptops) and DIMM (desktops).
