The multi-functional logistics unit with a history spanning more than seven decades was inactivated as part of the Army’s transformation process and logistical modularization. Maj. Gen. Yves Fontaine, 21st TSC commander, likened reviewing the 29th SG’s distinguished history to reading a “brilliant manuscript.” “It is a great organization and it is a sad day to reach the end of this outstanding mission,” he said. For the brigade’s last commander, Col. Robin Akin, it was a bittersweet moment as well. “Although I am saddened by the end of the unit’s service to our Army, it is a privilege for me to be SPORTS See CHECKS, page 3 Photo by Ina Stiewitz NEWS Teaming up with chief master sergeants, first sergeants, security forces, Air Force Office of Special Investigations and the legal office, the Drug Demand Reduction program is trying to prevent drivers under the influence and illegal substances from entering the Air Force community by doing random gate checks before entering Ramstein.  “It helps to ensure the safety of our dependents and servicemembers on base,” said Alex Tremble, program manager of the Drug Demand Reduction program, also known as DDR.  The DDR is just a small piece of the puzzle; it was implemented by the Military Personnel Drug Abuse Testing Program in 1994 to help support the “Air Force Family.” One way the DDR helps the Air Force is by trying to prevent any illegal substances or anyone under the influence from entering the base by conducting random gate checks. “It detects and identifies those individuals who use and Sembach Airman wins heavyweight title, pg. 22 Visit Cologne, experience the culture, pg. 12 Commentary Page 2 Kaiserslautern American June 20, 2008 Revisit basic fundamentals for success by Col. Bill Bender 86th Airlift Wing and KMC commander The KMC has a huge mission and does a phenomenal job in making that mission happen every day. Our jobs include technical work that must be completed with the utmost care and attention to detail. Just as professional athletes spend the first several weeks of training camp focusing on the basic fundamentals of their positions, we must also pause occasionally and check ourselves against an absolute standard – compliance with published guidance. This standard exists in every area of our operations – from the flight line, to the top of a microwave tower, to our records keeping. In our efforts to balance workload and time, we must not allow ourselves to accept a “that’s the way we do it here” mentality. Instead, we must focus on compliance with the technical order or appropriate governing publication. At each organization throughout the KMC, there are units designed to police us through inspections and exercises to ensure we are compliant. As an example, the Defense Threat Reduction Agency is ensuring our compliance with the Conventional Forces Europe treaty in an exercise June 26. I want to thank Lewis Gingery and Billy Hendricks for their leadership in preparing the KMC to meet the standards of this international agreed-upon treaty. I also want to thank Henry Kaaihue and his entire U.S. Army Garrison Kaiserslautern Emergency Disaster Planning Office for coordinating exercises that involve Army and Air Force units. The next exercise that focuses on community force protection scenarios within the KMC will take place July 3. Exercises and inspections are one way for us to police ourselves, but I would also ask you to look at your job and embrace the idea of getting back to basics in an effort to improve your unit. Instead of briefing “standard operations,” brief the standard. You should continually ask yourself, “What does the book say?” Commander’s Action Line Q Why does the traffic light on Ramstein near the 723rd Air Mobility Squadron Cargo Terminal not work for motorcycles? Motorcycles coming to the light and making a left hand turn will sit there until another car pulls over the strip in the road to activate the light signal. A Our technicians evaluated the traffic light near the 723rd AMS Cargo Terminal and found the magnetic sensor was set with a low sensitivity, resulting in some motorcycles not being detected. The technicians adjusted the sensitivity and ran several tests with several different motorcycles, all of which were now detected and activated the traffic signal. Col. Bishop reflects on 3rd Air Force tenure by Senior Master Sgt. Hollis Dawson 3rd Air Force Public Affairs He is one of the Air Force’s most experienced operators. He has deployed numerous times through a variety of operations, ranging from Desert Storm to Shining Hope. As an operations group commander, he led his group in support of more than seven named contingencies. He has responded to numerous humanitarian calls for action, including the Mount Pinatubo eruption in the Philippines and multiple typhoon, hurricane and famine relief operations. Yet, despite those experiences over the past 34 years, Lt. Gen. Rod Bishop sees his role as the commander of 3rd Air Force as the ideal culmination to his active duty career. “I can’t think of a better job to end my Air Force career,” said General Bishop. “Being in an operationally-oriented command and doing our nation’s bidding and working with the superb people that make up 3rd Air Force is the perfect ending to my years of service.” General Bishop entered the Air Force in June 1974 after From CHECKS, page 1 abuse illegal drugs and other illicit substances,” said Mr. Tremble.  The random gate checks are a direct order from the base commander.  “We are not trying to catch anyone; we are trying to help prevent people from making stupid decisions,” Mr. Tremble said.  With the random gate checks, security forces collect servicemembers’ identifications and car registrations to verify that they are permitted to enter the base and are driving legally. Security forces, first sergeants and chief master sergeants would then conduct vehicle searches, looking for anything unusual or suspicious. An agent from the AFOSI and the legal office would also be on hand if an incident occurred and their assistance was needed.  Along with gate checks, random urine analysis tests will also be conducted. Random urine analysis orders are given directly from graduating from the over the years. “We owe much Air Force Academy. gratitude to the In the following leaders who had years, he has commanded an operthe vision of having ations support an operationallyfocused headsquadron, a C-141 quarters,” General Starlifter flying Bishop said. “Thanksquadron, a C-141 and C-17 Globefully, those leaders master operations saw the need to have an organizagroup and airlift tion focused on wing. Reflecting back, the general said waking up every morning to go to a job he didn’t consider to be a job is what he will miss most about the Air Force. And, having good people who understand the operational level of war is what ties it all together. “Being a lifelong operator, I love the instantaneous gratification we get when an operation is successful,” he said. “But, I’m pleased to say every one of the great men and women of 3rd Air Force has been the key to that success. “I thoroughly enjoyed my opportunity to roll up my sleeves and work beside America’s best sons and daughters … It’s an experience I will always cherish,” he said. As the largest one outside of the U.S., the Army in Europe Records Holding Area keeps track of Department of Army forms as far back as the 1980s. These hardcopy forms – generated for and signed by Soldiers and civilians assigned in Europe – include legal, contracting, individual permanent change of station, separation, dental and downrange records. “It’s history. It’s litigation. It’s protection for the Army and individuals,” said Alfred Lang, the U.S. Army Installation Management Command-Europe Human Resources director, at the grand opening June 6 at the RHA’s new location in Panzer Kaserne, Bldg. 3041. Beside the hardcopy storage, these records are also cataloged in six main databases and six sub-databases, said Thomasz Proch, a RHA management technician, who is responsible for inputting and tracking this information. “We have the technology and process in place to go digital,” said Lorna Martin Gross, the IMCOM-E records manager. She said she could see the RHA in the future as a little room with just a computer in it. However, she added, “As long as Andreas Kühn, an Army in Europe Records Holding Area management technician, looks through some historical documents June 6 at the facility’s new home on Panzer Kaserne in Kaiserslautern. hard copies are being generated, we will need to keep them, especially for litigation where signatures are very important.” Mr. Lang agrees, “This (hardcopy storage) will never go away.” The RHA was first located in Maison Fort, France, during World War II. It was here that separation records for Clark Gable, Elvis Presley and Medal of Honor recipient Audie Murphy were stored. After the deactivation of Army units from France in 1967, it was moved to Bremerhaven, Germany. Bensheim was home to the RHA from 1992 until now. Renovating the From INACTIVATION, page 1 standing before you as the last Dragon Brigade commander and to honor the legacy of the 29th Support Group,” she said. She recalled that while she knew the 29th SG was going to be inactivated even as she took command almost two years earlier, the mission was never affected. General Fontaine agreed. “You not only prepared to inactivate, but deployed and redeployed many of your subordinate units to Afghanistan and Iraq. You implemented Left-Behind Equipment support, provided professional augmented logistics observers or controllers to the Joint Multinational Readiness Center to support the multiple complex exercises, operated Europe’s only Deployment Processing Center, conducted rigger support for special operations, helped train our coalition partners for their deployments and supported existing building on Panzer Kaserne for federal requirements for an RHA took four months with a price tag of about $350,000, said Kent Carson, the U.S. Army Garrison Kaiserslautern Public Works director. HeaddedtheRHAwasoneof about30 ongoing transformation projects currently taking place here. Under the U.S. Army Europe transformation plan, Kaiserslautern is listed as an enduring community. Darmstadt closing in September was one of the reasons for the move, but the biggest reason, said Mr. Lang, was the building itself. In Bensheim, the RHA occupied a former Mercedes truck plant, numerous exercises in theater,” General Fontaine said. Throughout this, the 29th SG was in a constant state of flux, absorbing inactivated units from the 21st TSC’s other brigades before finally relocating, transferring and inactivating all units. The 29th SG’s only remaining units – its Headquarters and Headquarters Company, the 512th Maintenance Company, the 596th Maintenance Company and the 618th Movement Control Detachment – were inactivated during the same ceremony. Keeping with the great book analogy, General Fontaine spoke of the 29th SG’s distinguished lineage and past. “There are many great chapters in the ‘Team Awesome’ history; so many that we cannot list them all,” General Fontaine said. “The 29th was first activated during World War II and was deployed to the Pacific Theater, where Pvt. which had several rooms. Here, it is in a single 40,000-square foot building, which makes using a forklift to load and unload pallets onto racks a lot easier, said Andreas Schork, a RHA management technician, whose main job is driving the forklift. “I drive it every day – eight hours,” he said. Mr. Schork, Mr. Proch and colleague, Andreas Kühn, are responsible for collecting, reviewing, cataloging, storing, preserving and acting as the shipping agent of Army in Europe’s official records. They process these records based on the Army Records Information Management System disposition instructions. The Privacy Act of 1974 also plays heavily in the storing and processing of records. All three – more than half of the current staff – agreed to relocate to the new location. “We are really glad about that because this will guarantee that we will continue the quality of service we have provided so far,” said Mr. Lang. Units here will not have many dealings with the RHA unless it is to drop off records, said Martin Gross. Individuals wanting a record from the RHA will need to fill out a Freedom of Information Act request form. The RHA also stores records for Department of Defense Education Activity, Army and Air Force Exchange Service and the Criminal Investigation Division. George Watson earned a Medal of Honor.” “The 29th was activated again for the Vietnam War and supported famous battles such as the Tet Counter-Offensive,” he said. “In 1980, the 29th finally activated in Germany and was providing support to this theater when the Berlin Wall came down and the exciting years of German reunification began.” General Fontaine then spoke of the events he considers critical to defining the history of the 29th SG. “Under the command of Col. John J. Deyermond, who retired as a major general, the 29th deployed to Kaposar, Hungary, to support Operation Joint Forge – the NATO-led Stabilization Force in Bosnia-Herzegovina. And, in support of the Global War on Terrorism, the 29th deployed for Operation Enduring Freedom where Brig. Gen. Lynn A. Collyar took the 29th downrange to establish joint logistics in Afghanistan,” he said. Page 6 Kaiserslautern American A Sopwith Triplane of the Royal Navy Air Service Photo from author’s collection The other (and original) triplane by Dr. Marshall Michel 86th Airlift Wing historian Say “World War I triplane” and one immediately thinks of the Fokker Dr. 1 and, more precisely, the all-red mount of the war’s leading ace – the German Manfred Albrecht Freiherr von Richthofen. But, in fact, the Fokker aircraft was a derivative – a slightly improved copy of the British Sopwith Triplane that first flew in May 1916. The Sopwith aircraft was the result of air combat experience that had shown that maneuverability, high rate of climb and good cockpit visibility were essential. The lift of the three sharply staggered wings replacing the normal two was expected to First Sergeants’ corner Commanders and first sergeants receive notification of many personal debts that are made by unit personnel on and off the economy, including traffic citations from our host nation’s Polizei. As a reminder, IAW AFI 36-2906: Air Force members are expected to pay their take care of the first two requirements. The very narrow wings – three feet, three inches – and positioning the middle wing level with the pilot’s eyes provided excellent visibility. The triplane was similar to an earlier, well-regarded Sopwith fighter – the Pup – but was somewhat larger and powered by a 110 horsepower rotary engine instead of the Pup’s 80 horsepower engine. The triplane was armed with a single .30 caliber machine gun and notably lacked the large number of bracing wires that were common on other aircraft, but the structure was sound. Three minutes into its first test flight, the test pilot looped the aircraft. Further testing showed it was also very easy to fly. In September 1916, the Germans began financial obligations in a proper and timely manner. Failure to pay debts may result in the creditor obtaining a court judgment, which could result in an involuntary allotment from the member’s military pay. The Sopwith Triplane was quickly ordered by both the British Army’s Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Navy Air Service and began to arrive at the front in late 1916. But, for unclear reasons, it was flown almost entirely by RNAS. In early 1917, the Germans almost drove the allies from the skies, especially during “Bloody April,” but the triplane proved superior to the Albatros and the five RNAS Triplane squadrons helped hold the line. One triplane pilot scored 24 kills in two months and triplanes were so successful that the German high command seemed to think there was magic in the design and demanded a copy from its aircraft designers. The most successful was the Fokker Dr.1, which was similar in size and performance, but carried two machine guns to the Sopwith’s one. Even though the Dr. 1 appeared almost a year after the British triplane, it was well-liked by the German squadrons and was used almost exclusively by several of its aces, notably Richthofen and Werner Voss. Ironically, while the Germans were scrambling to build copies, the Sopwith Triplane was being withdrawn from service and replaced by the faster and more heavily-armed Sopwith Camel. But the Camel, unlike the docile Triplane, had some vicious flying characteristics (more Camels were lost in accidents than in combat) and most triplane pilots looked askance at their new mounts. ity, do you think it meets the minimum standards of appearance and cleanliness? If not, here’s how we all can play a part in installation excellence: Help your facility managers clean and dress facility exteriors, parking lots, sidewalks, outdoor areas and planting beds. For facility interiors, the focus is to clean out storage rooms and common areas; dust; wash windows; remove cobwebs; and clean up in general. The area of responsibility for industrial and office buildings extends 100 feet in all directions and includes litter pick-up, weed removal, bush trimming, leaf raking and window washing. Be a team player. Don’t walk by a piece of litter; pick it up and put it in the nearest trash receptacle. Develop a culture of installation excellence and pride in the overall appearance of your base and unit facilities. Together, we can make the KMC shine. The KMC draws all of its drinking water from wells several hundred feet below ground. Water is pumped from these wells, treated and then distributed to our communities. The 735th Civil Engineer Squadron Water Plant and Exterior Utility sections operate and maintain the KMC water distribution equipment and systems. The 735th CES personnel work 24 hours a day, seven days a week to ensure the system is pressurized and maintains sufficient chlorine residual. They conduct daily operational monitoring to maintain the high quality of their final product – our drinking water. Since Nov. 1, 2007, the two Vogelweh systems including Kapaun Air Station, are combined and are supplied by the City of Kaiserslautern water provider, Technische Werke Kaiserslautern. The 435th MDG Bioenvironmental Engineering Flight routinely monitors water quality throughout the systems. Each week, the flight tests chlorine and pH levels, and collects water samples for bacteriological and chemical analysis. All routine monitoring requirements are conducted in accordance with the Final Governing Standards for Germany. The FGS-G defines the parameters to be monitored (most stringent U.S./German requirements), the sampling frequency, the maximum contaminant level, the notification procedures, and what processes should be initiated if noncompliance is detected (i.e. treatment techniques, bottled water issuance, etc.). The U.S. Army Center for Health Promotion and Preventive Medicine at Landstuhl, a German and U.S. certified and accredited laboratory, performs most of the analytical requirements. The 435th MDG Bioenvironmental Engineering routinely monitors for more than 100 drinking water parameters. Due to the exceptional quality of our groundwater source, treatment is, for the most part, unnecessary. Chlorination is accomplished because it provides a measurable means of ensuring our water is properly disinfected. All of our water sources are chlorinated, except the Vogelweh systems since Nov. 1, 2007, and some of our water sources are filtered. (Courtesy of 435th Medical Group Bioenvironmental Engineering) Make the work request process aid your mission Wing funding for civil engineers to execute facility work orders is declining and CE must increasingly shelve non-mission-essential work requirements, focusing on those which directly support mission-critical facilities or significantly impact quality of life programs and facilities. Facility managers, commanders and occupants can use the work request system to highlight and justify facility needs, enabling smart prioritization of work requests across the KMC.  Facility managers are the primary generators of WRs and must ask themselves, “Is this request a mission need or is it a nice-tohave request?”  This is the question that the CE Work Request Review Board will try to answer from the information provided with the WR. For mission needs, facility managers should explain how not executing the work will impact their unit’s mission.  A “nice-to-have” WR might be moving an electrical outlet a few feet to accommodate new systems furniture or a request to install a drinking fountain for convenience of facility occupants.  While these requirements might be important, how does that impact the mission? If CE were to attempt to support all WRs immediately and on a first-come basis, the focus of manpower and funds on requirements like the above examples would rapidly deplete resources and compromise support for the Fly-Fight-Win mission.  All emergency and urgent requests should be called in to CE Service at 480-6540/6546, preferably by designated facility managers.  However, anyone can call in an emergency work order for requirements involving risk to life, safety, health or avoidance of facility damage.  For non-emergency WR submittals, per AFI 32-1001, use the AF Form 332, Base Civil Engineer Work Request.  The completed form, with proper coordination and supporting documents, should be dropped off with CE Service Call in Bldg. 520.  AF Forms 332 will be coordinated through the fire department, wing safety and bioenvironmental or environmental (mandatory agencies), so a clear description of work with strong justification is critical for good understanding of need through each step of the process. Emergency and urgent work orders become CE shop priorities and are worked as expeditiously as funding and manpower permit.  Non-emergency or urgent WRs may be filed awaiting consolidation with other work requirements in the same facility into a planned, contracted project that then competes with many other projects for funding priority.  Whether worked by in-house efforts or combined with other WRs in a contracted project effort, preparation leading up to execution can be confusing to those outside of CE.  Facility managers are welcome to maintain contact with CE customer service staff to ask for updates.  Between fund limitations, commander priority changes, mission changes, facility emergencies, unexpected storm recovery repairs, discovery of hazardous material or life, safety and health issues, the WR program remains a dynamic process with constant reassessment of priorities. CE’s successful WR program management requires excellent information from customers and facility managers.   For more processing guidance, call 480-6488. Girl scouts show appreciation by Liz Davis Landstuhl Neighborhood Girl Scouts Regina Tiedemann received the Girl Scout Appreciation Pin at the Landstuhl Neighborhood Girl Scouts annual Leader Appreciation Dinner May 6. Ms. Tiedemann was recognized for going above and beyond in the development of a program to introduce the Landstuhl Girl Scouts to the traditional German sport of Volksmarching. Her program meets the existing requirements for the Volksmarching in Germany fun patch, sponsored by the Ramstein Girl Scouts; a PowerPoint presentation introducing the history of the sport; German Volksmarching terms and etiquette; and a “practice” Volksmarch to reinforce the trail signs and language. Ms. Tiedemann’s program has not only encouraged and introduced our girl scouts and families to a new form of fitness, but it has also helped to strengthen ties between the German and American communities. In 2007, Ms. Tiedemann arranged a service opportunity for the Landstuhl Girl Scouts at the annual Ramstein Roadrunners Spring Volksmarch. Many troops volunteered to man busy check points, stamp participation cards and distribute refreshments. She did this again later in the year for the Ramstein Roadrunner’s Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving Day. Aside from this amazing accomplishment, Ms. Tiedemann has also excelled in her added responsibilities of running her own Girl Scout troop, teaching Standard First Aid and CPR to both Girl Scouts and civilians as well as her duties as the U.S. Army Garrison Kaiserslautern Child and Youth Services Nurse. Ms. Tiedemann will be greatly missed as she has PCS’d to Italy where she will be a valuable asset to their military community. Towering above the city are the steeples of the worldfamous Kölner Dom, or Cologne Cathedral. This splendid church is a perfect example of high Gothic style architecture − few large buildings in the world have been built in such a uniform way.  Among the many treasures in the cathedral is the Gero cross, which dates back to A.D. 975, the Occident’s oldest large sculpture, the Shrine of the Three Magi (1180-1225), an outstanding example of goldsmith’s work from the Rhine area and the largest winged altar painting called the Dombild. It was created by Stephan Lochner around 1450 and is a real masterpiece of the Cologne Art School.  The beautiful choir fittings have been entirely preserved, as have the statues of the 12 apostles in the choir. These are sights not to be missed. Anyone entering the cathedral is overwhelmed when looking up at the tall windows and steep vaulting.  The main thoroughfare of Roman times, Hohe Strasse, today is Cologne’s most famous street for shopping. The most prominent evidence of the Roman times are the remains of the city walls, the Römerturm, and the 14-meter high Poblicius Tomb in the RömischGermanisches Museum, which dates back to around A.D. 40. This museum presents everyday Roman life and shows wonders of art, such as glass and ceramics − 2,000 years of Cologne history.  Cologne is a city where people find their way around easily. A discovery tour may start from the Dom into the pedestrian paradise Hohe Strasse and Schildergasse, or into the old part of town.  There are many famous Romanesque churches surrounding the city. The Wallraf-Richarts and Ludwig museums, between the cathedral and the Rhine, house the World of Paintings. Cologne’s famous, and fairly new concert hall, the Philharmonie, can also be found here. The Altstadt, or old city, offers a 19th century atmosphere with its romantic buildings, pubs, bars and ale-houses waiting to be photographed.  With the Rhine river flowing right past the city, it’s definitely recommended to experience Cologne aboard one of the day or night cruises offered by the KD Köln-Düsseldorfer Boat Company. From here you get an entirely different view of the city.  Cologne has plenty of recreational areas and parks. The Rhine Park with its anzbrunnen or open-air dancing fountain, located next to the Trade Fair Center, is particularly famous. It consists of six villages – Trippstadt, Stelzenberg, Schopp, Queidersbach, Linden and Krickenbach. The administration office is located on Pirmasenser Strasse in Kaiserslautern and the union community mayor is Uwe Unnold. The six villages are located on an area of 9,000 hectares, between 250 and 500 meters above sea level, and two-thirds of it is forest. About 11,500 inhabitants and thousands of tourists coming to this area each year enjoy the mild climate. The Kaiserslautern-Süd Union Community is considered a paradise for hikers and people who enjoy being outdoors. There are 400 kilometers of marked hiking and bicycle paths, valleys, creeks and ponds. Trippstadt is an official health resort town because of its good climate and its oxygen-rich air. It has a Baroque palace with a garden and park area. Today, the “Trippstadter Schloss” houses the forestry research facility of the state of Rheinland-Pfalz. Another token is Wilenstein Castle, built in the 12th century. The twin castle sits above Karl’s valley, where people can walk through a romantic gorge. Today, the older and reconstructed part of the castle houses a youth hostel and, in summer, concerts take place in the castle yard. A renovated former smithy is now the iron industry museum. Its exhibition shows how the extraction and production of iron brought wealth and prosperity to the town. The last iron-works were closed in 1892. Guided tours of Brunnenstollen, a former aqueduct (water supply tunnel) from the 18th century are offered from May to the end of August. Call 06306341 to arrange a tour. Stelzenberg, documented in 1534 for the first time, is known for its annual baking fest, where bread is baked in an historic baking house. Schopp belongs to the socalled “wood land.” The wood was always one of the most important sources of income. Former quarries in the area are home to rare lizards and protected plants, such as sundew. Schopp is also known for its international bike races and the German Championship in mountain bike cross-country races. Queidersbach is more than 1,000 years old. It has a museum that displays the life and works of forefathers. Linden has about 1,300 inhabitants. Worth seeing is the little Protestant church that was renovated in 1999 and its old cemetery. Krickenbach used to be a village of farmers and workers working in the nearby quarries. There are still a lot of old sandstone houses. Worth a visit is the House of Sustainability, located at Johanniskreuz on B48, south of Trippstadt. It has displays explaining the following subjects: forest recovery, environmental education, environmental supply – raw materials, and protection of species. For details, visit www. hdn-pfalz.de. Leisure activities in the Kaiserslautern-Süd Union Community include hiking, horseback riding, bicycling, swimming, fishing and tennis. A very interesting hiking path is the sculpture trail (Skulpturenweg), on which hikers can admire sculptures made of red sandstone, wood or steel. A mini-golf course is next to the Sägmühle camping and leisure center, where people can rent paddle boats for the Sägmühle Pond. Jake Green preferred to take it to the next level by winning the U.S. Forces Armed Championships heavyweight boxing division at Wiesbaden Air Field, Army Post April 27.  Sergeant Green is a Phoenix Raven with the 786th Security Forces Squadron at Sembach Annex.  The Denver native began his boxing career at Ellsworth Air Force Base, S.D., more than seven years ago and was motivated from the start. He had the support of his family and a few skeptics, but it only fueled his motivation to be the best boxer possible.  Sergeant Green picked up the gloves as soon as he arrived at Sembach in 2005 and began training with the KMC boxing team and a group of mixed martial artists in the area.  Sports shorts USAGK Run/Walk The USAGK Community Run/Walk will be at 6 a.m. July 3 at Rhine Ordnance Barracks, Bldg. 370. Jake Green, 786th Security Forces Squadron (right), won the U.S. Forces Armed Championships heavyweight division at Wiesbaden Air Field, Army Post April 27. “I have always been athletic, but boxing is by far one of the toughest sports I have ever participated in,” said Sergeant Green. “Winning or losing is all on you and how much effort you put into each match is on you.”  Dedication and mental toughness are what Sergeant Green finds as the hardest aspects but are the key elements to succeeding in boxing.  “It’s waking up in the morning and getting out of bed to run for three to eight miles while everyone else is still asleep,” said Sergeant Green. “Going to the gym three times a day and training for a couple of hours – even though you are still exhausted, it is what you have to do.”  He puts everything he has into his training. It is crucial because he flies with all DOD airframes wherever the U.S Air Forces in Europe needs support.  “If you win, you know you did it all on your own and if you lose, you have no one to blame but yourself,” said Sergeant Green on his championship bout.  “Going into the fight, I doubted myself because I didn’t know anything about who I was fighting, except for that he had more experience than I did,” said the 6-foot, one-inch, 184-pound boxer while preparing himself for what was about to be his toughest fight.  “After the first round, I asked myself what I was doing in the heavyweight division, but I knew I was here for one thing and that was to fight,” said Sergeant Green.  The fight lasted all four rounds and came down to a judges’ 5-0 unanimous decision which declared Sergeant Green the heavyweight champion.  “The tournaments are only held once a year, but the Army puts on monthly competitions called smokers that are open to all active-duty military personnel and DOD civilians,” he said. “Depending on my work schedule, I will try to compete.”  But for now, all Sergeant Green wants to do is enjoy what he has accomplished by winning the U.S. Forces Armed Championships heavyweight division.
