Tracan believes in creating perfect fit products for unique applications. In over 40 years of business Tracan has become deeply involved with embedded computers and has developed a keen understanding of the industries we serve. We use this knowledge to identify new opportunities where we can make a difference. One such area we have identified is in asset management and mining where it is not uncommon to see several different data loggers each running unique software often in a proprietary format. As a result the Information Systems teams who manage these operations inherit the responsibility to maintain multiple data logging systems each requiring their own infrastructure and expertise. Tracan’s goal is to change this by offering a product that can be used as an application server capable of running multiple software products and making the necessary data readily available. We believe the first step to achieving this goal is to provide a suitable hardware platform that will meet these specific needs. We leveraged years of industry experience and market research in developing the Rugged Data Distribution Unit (RDDU). This product has been created specifically for the extreme environments of industrial vehicles and utilizes conduction cooling technology with all electronics enclosed within an aluminum frame and housing. This concept provides critical thermal management of high performance processors, resistance to shock and vibration and ensures EMC protection of electronics. The RDDU offers the highest performance available making it more than capable of running multiple applications and provides a rich compliment of I/O. Our product can be easily customized, modified and upgraded on a modular basis and is a worthy of consideration by all Information Systems teams who share our vision.
How We Differentiate Distinctive Functionality A unique combination of features makes the RDDU uncommon among its peers. The unit has been designed for headless operation or supports up to two Tracan Vehicle Touch Monitors (VTMonitor) each with unique display content. The RDDU also incorporates a supercapacitor based UPS and a selectable serial fallback switch.
RDDU VTMonitor
Great Performance
This is a rugged, lightweight monitor with an anti-glare touch screen and integrated speaker has been designed specifically for the RDDU. The VTMonitor includes brightness and volume control and four programmable buttons which can be configured to launch an on-screen keyboard. Supercapacitor UPS
Impressive Power Efficiency
Built-in power conditioning and a rugged power supply improve resistance to power related failures, reducing unplanned maintenance and downtime. An integrated supercapacitor UPS provides temporary power during brief power outages and Power Conditioning enhances immunity to problems associated with electrical power quality typically found in vehicle/mobile applications. Supercapacitors hold a number of advantages over other power storage technologies. With an expected cycle life of 500,000 cycles they are superior to Sealed Lead Acid which deliver only 300 cycles at best. Cold temperatures have very little impact on supercapacitor hold up capacity while Sealed Lead Acid can only deliver 50% of their capacity at -20°C. Ultimately this means a supercapactior based UPS requires less planned maintenance, better temperature performance and higher reliability. The UPS can be configured to hold up any attached VTMonitors during a power outage or alternatively can power down the VTMonitor to preserve hold up capacity. Optional PoE Ethernet Switch The built-in Ethernet switch reduces the need for external hardware while offering a redundant network path as well as the ability to share the Wireless link with external devices located on the same local Ethernet network. Each of the four ports of the Switch offer PoE to provide power to your enabled devices such as Mesh Radios. Leading Performance The Intel Atom E3845 (Bay Trail) of the RDDU provides nearly 5X the performance of the VIA C7 at a slightly lower Wattage. This improved performance provides better resource availability and greater processing capacity while easily maintaining an operating temperature range of -40 to +60°C. Embedded CPU

In an embedded product such as the RDDU a high Performance per Watt ensures optimal processing capacity at a low wattage without sacrificing reliability. According to Passmark CPU Mark, the Intel Atom E3845 used in the RDDU is among the best in Performance per Watt and is over 1.4X better than even the closest competing embedded CPUs on the market.
RDDU Modular Design The RDDU is composed of 7 modules all connected via a passive backplane: • Connector and Conditioning Module provides the front panel connectors and can be modified to support application specific I/O • 4 I/O Modules provide specific I/O functions not available from the CPU Module • CPU Module, the main processing unit Is easily upgraded for higher perfomace or to migrate to the latest technologies • UPS/PSU Module can be customized to provide more power or to increase hold up capacity Each module can be customized individually, potenially without any impact on the other modules of the system.
Easy Deployment The RDDU is mounted by four 1/4 turn screws which means only one revolution of a screwdriver is required during installation and removal. This significantly improves serviceability and is particularly convenient with gloved hands at -40°C. For customers of our iCLX product, the RDDU uses many of the same connectors which provides compatibility with existing cable assemblies. By avoiding the need to change this existing infrastructure, deployment of the RDDU takes less time and is significantly less costly. Advanced Thermal Management Thermal management is accomplished by utilizing a unique combination of card specific milled aluminium housings and a heat dissipating frame. Wedgelocks provide both thermal conductivity from individual cards to the frame, and a mechanical interface which is highly resistant to shock and vibration.

Configurable and Extensible The RDDU is ready to deploy in our standard configuration or is optionally customizable, uniquely providing a hardware platform that can be altered to meet customer specific preferences and requirements. The design offers the flexibility to integrate customer specific modules or other proprietary technology. As a modular, card based architecture, adding additional functionality or changing the I/O compliment only requires the design of a new I/O card without unnecesarily impacting the other parts of the system. All cards a simply interconnected via our passive backplane.
