Monopod Clamp collars the top tube of the monopod securely and adjusts to a range of tube diameters. Multiple tapped holes accept Safari Rig attachments.
»
Ball Clamps resemble our BH-25 in size & design. Their ability to pan and articulate allows for both height and angle adjustments; secure your monopod practically anywhere.
»
Safari Clamp is extremely rugged and highly versatile. Intended to secure heavy gear to the vertical or horizontal rail in a safari vehicle, the Safari Clamp will just as easily grasp non-uniform supports like branches, posts, and table tops.
» Leveling base on a monopod? Might sound odd, but a rigid monopod is unable to make even minor leveling adjustments in response to changing terrain. Our TA-2-LB leveling base mounted to your monopod will deliver ±15° of float; rapid locking mechanism makes quick adjustments fast and smooth.

TA-2-LB Our TA-2-LB is the most unique leveling base on the market. This adaptable leveling base fits all Versa Series 2 tripods, but it also mounts to Versa Quick Columns (or Gitzo Series 2 center columns) to create leveling center columns; only Really Right Stuff Versa tripods deliver this versatility. The TA‑2-LB also fits our monopods and is a fundamental component in our new Andy Biggs Safari Rig (previous page).

TA-2-PFH and TA-3-PFH Platform & Hook Our Series 2 Versa Platform & Hook can replace a Gitzo Series 2 platform. Our Series 3 Versa Platform & Hook can replace the platform of any Gitzo Series 3 Systematic tripod. Finally, your legacy Gitzo Systematic tripod will have a weight hook.

TA-3-LB & TA-3-VB Level your shots faster. Shoot panoramas with less equipment and weight. With a TA-3-LB Leveling Base installed in your Versa Series 3 SureGrip™ Apex (or any Gitzo Series 3 Systematic), simply loosen the knurled handle and tilt your leveling base quickly into level position. You can even leave the ballhead at home when you set out shooting panoramas. Just mount your pano gear directly to the leveling base; see pp64-71. Our TA-3-VB Video Bowl is also available separately and accepts all standard 75mm ball base video heads.

TA-3-FS* Install a set of these 3-inch Spikes to further stabilize your tripod in heavy crosswinds and on shifty terrain. *Price unavailable at print; Please check our website.
HANDY TIP Only Really Right Stuff Versa tripods have the versatility to be used with a platform, or a leveling base, or a leveling center column.

BALLHEADS Which ballhead should you buy? Really Right Stuff designs and manufactures professional grade tripod ballheads that can support heavy loads, lock solidly, and move smoothly. All of our ballheads are faster to use and inherently more stable than 3-axis “pan-tilt” tripod heads.
MID-SIZE BH-40 40mm ball for most gear pp20-21
Tripods with ballheads are also much easier to carry and pack than tripods with pan-tilt heads—no long, protruding handles. A Really Right Stuff ballhead will help you learn to love your tripod. Aiming and horizon leveling can be accomplished as one instinctive motion, and rigid lockup takes just a quick twist of one control. Our full-size and mid-size ballheads also offer variable “drag” (tension) that makes them easy to control. The Really Right Stuff quick-release system offers implicit advantages, and all Really Right Stuff ballheads can be

BH-30 & BH-25: COMPACT & ULTRA-LIGHT BALLHEADS These are no nonsense heads with robust capacity, but with minimal weight and elegant simplicity. They excel as groundlevel macro tools, but also as super light heads for backpacking, travel, and table top use.
» The BH-30 ballhead has a beefy T-lever to lock ball articulation and an independent pan lock knob to control the panning base. Ball diameter is 30mm.
» The panning base of the BH-30 ballhead is laser engraved in 2.5º increments from 0°-360°.
» The BH-25 ballhead has a single T-lever which locks both panning and ball articulation simultaneously. Ball diameter is 25mm.
» The T-lever on both heads is longer on one end to help you lock the ball down solid. It is spring-loaded; simply P-U-L-L it out to reposition the lever to allow it to clear wider tripod platforms.

lenses. The MH-01 High Capacity Monopod Head is the answer. We conservatively rate this monopod head at 75 pounds; more than you will ever possibly require. Yet the MH-01 is only 8.8 ounces and compact enough to fit in a smaller lens compartment in your camera bag. It features an RRS-compatible dovetail on the foot to add versatility. Carry it along for use with your gimbal head when you need to switch to a non-tripod-collared lens without having to completely remove (and then subsequently replace) the gimbal head from/to the tripod. How to Measure for Your Lens: 1. Set your collared lens foot on a flat surface. 2. Using a ruler, measure the distance from the flat surface to the top of the barrel of the lens. 3. This dimension is the minimum internal clearance needed by your lens; choose a bracket with an interior clearance dimension that will accommodate your lens. Lens plate or replacement foot must have at least 0.75” (19mm) of dovetail free in order to mount a flash bracket. All flash brackets can accept additional flash mounts. See pages 60- 61 for spare flash mounts and additional flash accessories.
HANDY TIP The B85-B Flash Mount has not been converted to the new “QR” design yet, but it comes with the FA‑QR set to make it compatible with all flash accessories.

WHY USE A PANNING CLAMP?
67
back to contents
69
MPR-CL Use with most non-collared prime lenses. Not long enough for most zoom lenses. Clamp is fixed and accepts plates with left/ right orientation.
STEP 3 Mount Camera If you have an L-plate, securely mount your camera in portrait mode in the clamp at the end of the nodal slide. If you have a conventional plate, securely mount your camera in landscape mode. Use the laser-engraved centering index marks to properly align your camera in the nodal slide's clamp.
MPR-CL II Use with most non-collared zoom lenses. Clamp is fixed and accepts plates with left/ right orientation.

HOW TO SHOOT A PANO
Use a nodal slide to eliminate parallax. A nodal slide allows you

lens can be positioned directly over the axis of rotation (in image below, the center of the panning clamp). Our Pano Elements Package comes standard with our MPR-CL II nodal slide, but we offer other slides to meet the needs of every application. Many of these slides also make great gross focusing sliders for macro work.
192 Precision Plus Package Mini-clamps can be oriented parallel or perpendicular to rail. Perfect if shooting panos with collared & non-collared lenses.
STEP 1 Mount Nodal Slide Mount panning clamp onto head. Open panning clamp and top-load MPR-CL II nodal slide. Exact position isn't important. Tighten clamp securely.
192 Duo Package B2-Duo clamp is adjustable fore/aft and accepts plates* with fore/aft orientation. Great for shooting panos with collared telephoto lenses. *Compatible only with Really Right Stuff & Wimberley plates.
STEP 2 Get it Level Loosen the ballhead so that the ball moves freely, and shift ball until the large, high contrast spirit level in the MPR-CL II nodal slide indicates level. Always opt to reference the larger spirit level of the MPR-CL II rather than the much smaller level of the panning clamp. Lock down the ball (make sure the ballhead's panning base is also locked).
192 FAS Package FAS Clamp is adjustable fore/aft and accepts plates with left/right orientation. Index marker assures repeatable positioning.

STEP 4 Position Nodal Slide Loosen the clamp on the PCL-1, and slide the MPR-CL II fore or aft until you've aligned the optical center of the lens with the correct laser-engraved index mark on the PCL-1 panning clamp. Tighten clamp securely. See our website for detailed instructions on finding the nodal point for your lens.
STEP 5 Camera Settings Set exposure mode to Manual. Not sure what exposure to set? Pan your scene and snap a few images in Aperture Priority; set an aperture that will give you the depth of field that you want. Assuming you're shooting digital, review images and compare the shutter speed that your camera chose for the series; select a shutter speed that will be acceptable across the entire image. Now switch your camera to Manual and set both aperture and shutter speed. Turn off Auto White-Balance. Instead, set the White Balance manually. For most landscape scenes, the Sunny setting is just fine. Now you're ready to shoot!
HANDY TIP DON’T FORGET TO SHOOT YOUR PANO IN MANUAL! Manual exposure, manual white balance, and manual focus.

and, of course, lighting. Many books have been written that address solutions—we recommend John Shaw’s books.
These shortcomings are all neatly solved by the 180-200mm “macros”. They offer double the working distance, tight acceptance angles for easy background control, superior balance

Nikon’s 3T, 4T, 5T, 6T and Canon 500D) and supplementary extension tubes and teleconverters will get you close, there will come a time when every serious closeup shooter feels the irresistible lust to invest in what the trade calls a “macro lens.” These are special closeup lenses (also quite usable for general photography) that are highly corrected for close range imaging, and are capable of focusing all the way from infinity down to 1:2, or even to 1:1, all by themselves.
“Macro” Lenses The most generally popular “macro lens” is about 50 to 60mm in focal length. That’s good for stamps & coins, but lousy for nature and wildlife work. That focal length is too short to provide adequate working distance, and the angle of coverage is too wide to isolate the subject. The next step is a “macro lens” in a 100mm to 105mm focal length. These are better, but still entail a lot of compromise in

Another advantage gained when using any 200mm focal length lens for closeups is the more evenly distributed lighting that the subject receives when using flash. The lens’ longer working distance mitigates inverse square law light fall-off. A strobe can be applied with more natural results and there’s less background light fall-off.
Macro Flash In closeup work, flash will often be needed to permit the use of small (f/11-16) apertures to assure adequate depth-of-field at an acceptable exposure duration. Also—closeup subjects may require flash fill to reduce excessive contrast, or to produce catchlights, or to enhance modeling. It is seldom viable, when working close, to mount a strobe in the camera’s hot shoe. That position is too low, does not offer the needed 15-30˚ tilt for beam aiming, and is off-axis in vertical aspect. Add one of our flash brackets for more effective flash placement. More than one off-camera remote strobe may be
