Autodesk ships Linux platforms with Linux already installed; if you received your system directly from Autodesk, you should not have to install Linux. However, if at any point you must replace the system drive, you need to install Linux on the new system drive, prior to installing the Autodesk application. If for any reason you must reinstall Linux, before performing the installation you should, if possible, back up all projects and media prior to the installation; system reinstallation reformats the system drive. NOTE If you must replace the hard disk, you need to update your application license. Contact Autodesk Media and Entertainment Customer Support for assistance.
Audience Assumptions This guide assumes you have knowledge of the Linux operating system, preferably a distribution from Red Hat Linux. It also assumes familiarity with Linux networking terms, tools, and procedures. If you are not familiar with these areas, you should not attempt to carry out the procedures in this guide. Contact Customer Support should you require further assistance. See Contacting Customer Support on page 3.

Installation Workflow on page 5 Locating the Installation Media on page 6 Preparing Your System on page 6 Installing Red Hat Enterprise Linux Workstation on page 7
Installation Workflow This section describes the major steps involved in installing the Autodesk distribution of Red Hat Enterprise Linux Workstation (WS). The remainder of the chapter provides details on each of these steps. To install the Autodesk distribution of Linux: 1 Locate the installation media. See Locating the Installation Media on page 6. 2 Prepare your system. See Preparing Your System on page 6. 3 Install Linux. See Installing Red Hat Enterprise Linux Workstation on page 7. 4 Perform the following post-installation tasks: ■
Change the default root password to secure the system. The provided Autodesk kickstart file sets the password for the root account on your workstation to password.
■
Configure the network settings for your workstation to match the ones used in your facility. Refer to Basic Network Configuration Guidelines on page 11 to configure these settings. NOTE If you are installing on an Incinerator configuration using a centralized install process, you only need to configure network settings if you do not want to use the default network hostnames and addresses set during the Linux installation. In this case, refer to the Incinerator documentation.
5
■
Configure the time zone for your geographic location. The workstation is set to North American Eastern Standard Time (EST) by default. If necessary, consult the Red Hat or CentOS online documentation to configure this setting. NOTE Consult the Release Notes for your application to determine whether you must update firmware and/or software drivers for devices.
5 Install the Discreet Kernel Utility (DKU). Refer to the Autodesk Visual Effects and Finishing Software Installation Guide for instructions on installing the DKU. NOTE If you are using a centralized install process to install Linux in an Incinerator configuration, this step is only necessary when you are installing on the Lustre Media Server. When you are installing on a workstation or Incinerator node, the DKU is installed automatically after the Red Hat Linux installation completes.
Locating the Installation Media You require the following media to install Linux on an Autodesk system. If you cannot locate the media or do not have the correct DVD distribution, contact Customer Support or your local sales representative. ■
Autodesk distribution of Red Hat Enterprise Linux Workstation 4 Update 3 One DVD, included with your release shipment. The Autodesk distribution installs the Linux software packages Autodesk applications require; these applications do not run under the commercial distribution of Red Hat Enterprise Linux WS 4 Update 3. If you received a new system with this release, your shipment also included the CD set for the commercial distribution of Red Hat Enterprise Linux WS 4 Update 3. Do not use this commercial distribution; use the DVD distribution instead. You can use the commercial distribution to activate your Red Hat subscription if it is not already activated.
■
Discreet Kernel Utility The Discreet Kernel Utility is located on your Autodesk Visual Effects and Finishing applications DVD. The Discreet Kernel Utility (DKU) is a set of drivers, utilities, and a customized Linux kernel, that Autodesk applications require to run. If you are not sure whether the DKU version you have is the correct one for your release, consult the Release Notes for your application. The Release Notes contain the most recent information about your release. NOTE You can also download the Discreet Kernel Utility from the Autodesk FTP site. For information, contact Customer Support.
Preparing Your System The Linux installation procedure assumes that the system disk on your system can be reformatted, and that your hardware is in a specific state. The following procedure describes how to prepare your system. To prepare your system for Linux installation: 1 If possible, back up all user settings, project settings, and media from the system to another system or to a network drive. The installation of Linux erases and formats the system disk so this information is lost if it is not backed up. In addition, back up the following files: ■
/usr/discreet (for software setup and configuration files)
■
/etc (for Linux configuration files, networking, etc)
■
/usr/lib/DPS (for fonts)
■
/usr/local/flexlm/licenses (for DL_license.dat file)
6 | Chapter 2 Installing Linux
2 Make sure your system is in the following state: ■
Mouse, keyboard and graphics monitor are connected and the graphics monitor is powered on.
■
Other peripherals, such as the tablet and video breakout box are connected and powered on.
■
If you are using a KVM switch, it is connected to the component on which you want to install Linux.
■
Autodesk Visual Effects and Finishing workstations only: If the DVI-Ramp is part of your configuration, the DVI-Ramp is connected and powered on.
■
Standalone Lustre workstations only: The Lustre control surface is disconnected from the workstation.
■
Incinerator: The only network to which the system is connected is the Incinerator network. Each Incinerator component connects to the Incinerator network through port 0 of their onboard house network card. On the workstation, port 0 is the only port on the house network card. On the Lustre Media Server, port 0 is the right-hand port. On the nodes, port 0 is the left-hand port.
3 Shut down and power off the system. 4 Disconnect storage from the system. ■
If your system is equipped with external storage, disconnect the optical cables for all external storage devices from the ports on the fibre-channel card. If available, insert LC optical loopback adapters in the ports on the fibre-channel card to terminate those ports. Terminating the ports eliminates the two minutes per port the system spends attempting to establish communication with the storage. This speeds up the installation process significantly, as the process may require more than one reboot.
■
If your system is equipped with internal storage, open the side panel of the system and disconnect the main connector for the internal storage drives (SAS or SCSI). Make sure you do not disconnect the system drive. For more information on internal storage, refer to the Autodesk Stone Direct Configuration Guide for your release.
WARNING All storage devices (such as external disk arrays or internal storage) must be disconnected from the system to prevent the Red Hat installer from attempting to reformat them as part of the installation process.
Installing Red Hat Enterprise Linux Workstation The following procedure describes how to install the Autodesk distribution of Red Hat Enterprise Linux WS on your system. To install Red Hat Enterprise Linux WS 4 Update 3: 1 Verify the system is prepared as described in Preparing Your System on page 6. 2 Power on your system, insert the DVD of the Autodesk distribution of Red Hat Enterprise Linux WS in the DVD-ROM drive and reboot the system. 3 If the system does not boot from the DVD, reboot it and configure it to boot from the DVD-ROM drive as follows: ■
When the system starts to boot, press F12 (IBM systems) or F10 (HP® systems) to enter the BIOS. If the keyboard is connected to the system through a KVM switch, you may have to press this key repeatedly or hold it down to enter the BIOS.
■
Change the First Startup Device to CD/DVD-ROM (use the arrow keys to navigate the boot menus, and press Esc to exit menus).

Topics in this chapter: ■ ■ ■ ■ ■
Changing the IP Address on page 11 Modifying the Loopback Host Name on page 12 Enabling Multicasting on page 12 Enabling InfiniBand Networking on page 13 InfiniBand Management on page 14
Changing the IP Address Your workstation is shipped with a default IP address, which you can change to integrate the workstation into your facility. Update the following files with the network configuration necessary for your facility. Networking Configuration File
Description
/etc/hosts
Contains IP/host name pairs for host name resolution.
/etc/sysconfig/network
Contains global networking settings.
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-*
Contains interface-specific configuration.
/etc/resolv.conf
Contains DNS server information.
NOTE Always reboot the workstation after changing the host name.
11
Modifying the Loopback Host Name By default, the Linux Operating System sets the loopback setting to the host name of the workstation. The Discreet Kernel Utility (DKU) modifies the loopback host name in the /etc/hosts file on the workstation. If an error occurred during installation, use the following procedure to verify and correct the loopback host name. To verify or modify the loopback host name: 1 Go to the /etc directory and open the hosts file in a text editor. 2 By default, the loopback setting is identified on all workstations by the IP address 127.0.0.1.
3 Remove the explicit host name from the loopback domain name. In this example, the explicit host name is carolina.
4 Save and close the hosts file.
Enabling Multicasting If you are planning to access the system from a remote workstation, multicasting must be enabled for the network. To enable multicasting, define a gateway by specifying an IP address in /etc/sysconfig/network. If you do not define a gateway for your network in /etc/sysconfig/network, you must define default routes associated with specific interfaces in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-, where specifies your ethernet adapter. However, a default route specified in /network overrides any /ifcfg- default routes. Contact your system administrator to determine the method for enabling multicasting that is best suited for your network. To modify the /etc/sysconfig/network file: 1 Go to /etc/sysconfig and open the network file in a text editor. 2 Enter the GATEWAY keyword and specify the IP address. NETWORKING=yes HOSTNAME=carolina GATEWAY=192.168.60.1 Verify this information with the system administrator.
12 | Chapter 3 Basic Network Configuration Guidelines
3 Save and close the file.
Enabling InfiniBand Networking InfiniBand drivers are installed on all workstations by the DKU. To use your InfiniBand network interface, activate the InfiniBand drivers, configure the IP address of the interface, and then restart your workstation.
Activating InfiniBand (IB) NOTE This step is not required if the workstations had an already installed InfiniBand network card when the DKU was installed. The InfiniBand drivers are installed on all Linux workstations by the DKU. If the DKU detects the IB hardware, the chkconfig flag for IB drivers is set to ON. If you add an optional IB HBA after the DKU was initially installed, the chkconfig flag for the IB drivers will not be properly set. The following procedures describe how to use the InfiniBand configuration utility to set the chkconfig flag to ON for the IB drivers and configure the IP address and netmask of your Infiniband interface. To enable the chkconfig flag for IB drivers on a Linux workstation: 1 Start the InfiniBand configuration utility. Type:
/sbin/iba_config The InfiniBand configuration utility menu appears:
SilverStorm Technologies Inc. InfiniBand 4.1.1.0.15G Software 1) Show Installed Software 2) Reconfigure IP over IB 3) Reconfigure Driver Autostart 4) Update HCA Firmware 5) Generate Supporting Information for Problem Report 6) Host Setup via Fast Fabric 7) Host Admin via Fast Fabric 8) Chassis Admin via Fast Fabric 9) Externally Managed Switch Admin via Fast Fabric a) Uninstall Software X) Exit 2 Type 3 to select Reconfigure Driver Autostart. 3 Follow the on-screen instructions to configure the InfiniBand drivers. After completing the configuration of the IP address, you are returned to the main menu. 4 Type X to exit the InfiniBand configuration utility. 5 Restart your workstation for the changes to take effect. After rebooting, launch the InfiniBand configuration utility once again to configure IP over IB.
Enabling InfiniBand Networking | 13
Configuring the InfiniBand Network The following procedure describes how to use the /sbin/iba_config script to configure the IP address of the InfiniBand network interface. NOTE The iba_config script writes the IP address of the interface to the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ib1 file. To configure InfiniBand networking: 1 Start the InfiniBand configuration utility. Type:
/sbin/iba_config The InfiniBand configuration utility menu appears:
SilverStorm Technologies Inc. InfiniBand 4.1.1.0.15G Software 1) Show Installed Software 2) Reconfigure IP over IB 3) Reconfigure Driver Autostart 4) Update HCA Firmware 5) Generate Supporting Information for Problem Report 6) Host Setup via Fast Fabric 7) Host Admin via Fast Fabric 8) Chassis Admin via Fast Fabric 9) Externally Managed Switch Admin via Fast Fabric a) Uninstall Software X) Exit 2 Type 2 to select Reconfigure IP over IB. 3 Follow the on-screen instructions to configure the IP address and netmask of your InfiniBand interface. After completing the configuration of the IP address, you are returned to the main menu. 4 Type X to exit the InfiniBand configuration utility. 5 Restart your workstation for your changes to take effect.
InfiniBand Management This section describes how to view port statistics for an InfiniBand switch and how to obtain the InfiniBand log files. For more information about configuring, monitoring, and managing the InfiniBand switch and network, see the documentation provided by the manufacturer of the switch.
Reviewing Port Statistics Using the InfiniView Web Monitor The InfiniBand switch comes with a Web-based application, the InfiniView Device Manager™, that you can use to configure, monitor, and manage the InfiniBand network. To access the Device Manager, your browser must be on the same subnet as the InfiniBand switch, which has a default IP address of 192.168.100.9. To view switch port statistics using the InfiniView Device Manager: 1 Open a Web browser and enter the IP address of the InfiniBand switch, usually 192.168.100.9.
14 | Chapter 3 Basic Network Configuration Guidelines
The main page of the Device Manager appears.
2 Click Port Stats in the menu on the left. The IB Port Statistics page appears.
The page displays the status of each port on the switch. 3 Optional: Click Refresh to update the data on the page.
Reviewing Statistics and Information for a Port The InfiniBand driver provides two commands that output statistics and information about a port. The information provided by these commands is similar to that displayed in the InfiniView Device Manager. To review statistics and information about a port: ➤
Log in as root, and type the following commands in a terminal:
cat /proc/iba//1/port/stats cat /proc/iba//1/port/info where is the port number on the device, and is the HCA driver number for your device, for example: mt25218.
Reviewing Statistics and Information for a Port | 15
NOTE To find out the HCA driver number, type ls /proc/iba/ | grep mt. The driver number, beginning with mt, will be returned. A report appears in the terminal for each command.
Generating InfiniBand Log Files for Support The script /sbin/iba_capture gathers information about your system and InfiniBand configurations that can be useful for troubleshooting InfiniBand issues. This script outputs a GZIP file. To run the InfiniBand log file capture script: ➤
As root, open a terminal and type:
/sbin/iba_capture A GZIP file is generated that includes a number of log files from your system. NOTE The help for this command incorrectly indicates that the output is a TAR file, when it is in fact a GZIP file.
