The previous use and service history of the vehicle must always be taken into account. Check For Engine Damage CAUTION: This engine has been identified as an INTERFERENCE engine in which the possibility of valve-to-piston damage in the event of a timing belt failure is MOST LIKELY to occur. A compression check of all cylinders should be performed before removing the cylinder head(s). Repair Times - hrs Remove & install 3,20 Special Tools z z z z z z Camshaft setting bar - Renault No.Mot.1496. Camshaft sprocket locking tool - Renault No.Mot.1509/01. Crankshaft timing pin - Renault No.Mot.1054. Exhaust camshaft blanking plug tool - Renault No.Mot.1488. Inlet camshaft blanking plug tool - Renault No.Mot.1487. Wiper arm extractor (Scénic) - Renault No.Mot.1552. Special Precautions z z z z z z Disconnect battery earth lead. Throttle body. Engine lifting bracket. Auxiliary drive belt. Remove flywheel cover. 10. Lock flywheel with large screwdriver. Slacken crankshaft pulley bolt [6] . 11. Remove: { Crankshaft pulley bolt [6] . { Crankshaft pulley [7] . { Timing belt upper cover [8] . { Heat shield (Laguna/Scénic Turbo). { Timing belt lower cover [9] . 2 { { { { { Tensioner pulley nut [10] . Tensioner pulley [11] . Guide pulley bolt [12] . Guide pulley. Timing belt. NOTE: Timing belt must always be renewed once it has been removed. Installation NOTE: Tensioner pulley and guide pulley MUST be replaced. 1. Remove crankshaft sprocket. Degrease sprocket. Degrease end of crankshaft. NOTE: Replace crankshaft sprocket if NOT fitted with integrated key. 2. Ensure timing pin located correctly in crankshaft [4] . NOTE: Ensure timing pin not inserted into crankshaft web balance hole. 3. Ensure grooves in camshafts aligned [2] . 4. Ensure setting bar fitted correctly [5] . 5. Ensure crankshaft keyway [13] located centrally between lugs on engine front housing [14] & [15] . 6. Fit camshaft locking tool [16] . Tool No.Mot.1509/01. 7. Tighten camshaft locking tool nuts [17] . Tightening torque: 80 Nm. 8. Remove nut of each camshaft sprocket [18] & [19] . NOTE: Replace camshaft stud if loosened when removing nut. 9. Remove: { Locking tool [16] . { Camshaft sprockets. 10. Degrease ends of camshafts and camshaft sprockets. 11. Install camshaft sprockets. Finger tighten nuts [18] & [19] . 12. Fit new tensioner pulley [11] . Finger tighten nut [10] . NOTE: Ensure lug on rear of tensioner pulley located in groove in cylinder head. 3 13. Fit: { { { Crankshaft sprocket. Timing belt. New guide pulley. Tighten bolt to 50 Nm [12] . 14. Turn tensioner pulley clockwise until tensioner marks aligned [20] & [21] . Use 6 mm Allen key [22] . 15. Temporarily tighten tensioner nut [10] . Tightening torque: 7 Nm. 16. Fit camshaft locking tool [16] . 17. Tighten camshaft locking tool nuts [17] . Tightening torque: 80 Nm. 18. Temporarily tighten nut of each camshaft sprocket [18] & [19] . Tightening torque: 30 Nm. 19. Remove: { Locking tool [16] . { Setting bar [5] . { Timing pin [3] . 20. Mark camshaft sprockets and cylinder head with paint or chalk where indicated [23] . 21. Turn crankshaft two turns clockwise until just before setting position [23] . 22. Insert timing pin through hole in cylinder block and into crankshaft. 23. Turn crankshaft slightly clockwise. Ensure timing pin located correctly in crankshaft [4] . NOTE: Ensure timing pin not inserted into crankshaft web balance hole. 24. Ensure setting position marks aligned [23] . 25. Ensure tensioner pulley marks aligned [20] & [21] . If not: Repeat tensioning procedure. 26. Tighten tensioner nut [10] . Tightening torque: 28 Nm. 27. Fit: { { Setting bar [5] . Locking tool [16] . 28. Tighten camshaft locking tool nuts [17] . Tightening torque: 80 Nm. 29. Fit new nut to each camshaft sprocket [18] & [19] . Tightening torque: 30 Nm + 86±6°. 30. Remove: { Locking tool [16] . 4 { { Setting bar [5] . Timing pin [3] . 31. Turn crankshaft two turns clockwise until just before setting position [23] . 32. Insert timing pin through hole in cylinder block and into crankshaft. 33. Turn crankshaft slightly clockwise. Ensure timing pin located correctly in crankshaft [4] . NOTE: Ensure timing pin not inserted into crankshaft web balance hole. 34. Ensure tensioner pulley marks aligned [20] & [21] . 35. Ensure grooves in rear of camshafts horizontally aligned [2] . 36. Ensure camshaft setting bar can be fitted easily [5] . If not: Repeat installation and tensioning procedures. 37. Remove timing pin [3] . 38. Fit blanking plug [1] . 39. Lock flywheel with large screwdriver. 40. Fit new crankshaft pulley and bolt [6] & [7] . 41. Tighten crankshaft bolt [6] . Tightening torque: { Mégane/Scénic/Turbo (A): 40 Nm + 100-120°. { Laguna (B): 20 Nm + 100-130°. 42. Fit new blanking plug to rear of inlet camshaft. Use tool No.Mot.1487. 43. Fit new blanking plug to rear of exhaust camshaft. Use tool No.Mot.1488. 44. Install components in reverse order of removal. 45. Tighten RH engine mounting and bracket bolts: { Tightening torque: 62 Nm [24] . { Tightening torque: 105 Nm [25] . 5 6
