Recording
•
Insert PCMCIA card.
•
Connect the microphone to MIC/LINE 1 and the headphone to PHONES.
•
Open the MIC/LINE 1 and PHONES controls.
•
Switch the loudspeakers off (using the ON SPKR OFF switch).
If your microphone needs phantom power: •
Check if PHTM LED is on. If not, adjust this using the menu:
•
Go to AUDIO INPUTS, then select [A=OK]. Go to ‘phantom power’, then select [A=OK]. Go to ‘on’, then select [C=SET] and [A= SAVE].
•
Select ‘RECORD’ (top side).
•
OR: press the red, square key on the front side for half a second, until the red PAUSE LED blinks. This is the recording pause mode. Then press the same key on the front side again briefly to start recording.
Pausing and stopping the recording •
Select PAUSE (or the red, square key at the front side) to temporarily interrupt or resume recording.
•
Select STOP to end recording. OR: press the red and black square keys at the front side simultaneously.
Listening to a recording Select PLAY if you want to hear the last TAKE directly after recording.

Editing
Selecting audio •
Select PLAY.
•
Select CUE-IN when you hear the beginning of the desired fragment.
•
Adjust the begin point using [C=<<] and [D=>>] or < and >.
•
If desired, select RPT to check the CUE-IN point.
•
Select PLAY and find the end point of the fragment concerned.
•
Select CUE-OUT if you hear the end point.
•
Adjust the end point using [C=<<] and [D=>>] or < and >. Select RPT to listen and check the point.

Deleting a selection To delete the selected fragment from the raw audio, press DEL. Beware: the fragment will be deleted permanently, it cannot be undone. Check the result (of the planned deletion) beforehand using [C=SKIP]. Adding a selection to the TAKELIST and PLAYLIST •
Select INS.
•
Select [D=PLAY] to listen to the fragment once again. If necessary, adjust the begin and end points using CUE-IN and CUE-OUT.
•
Select [A=SAVE]. This fragment will be added to the TAKELIST and the PLAYLIST simultaneously. Compiling the PLAYLIST (editting) •
Select PLAYLIST. The red LED is lit. The green LEDs of PLAY and PAUSE are blinking.

Select [D=EDIT]. The content of the PLAYLIST appears. You can see all the TAKES made so far either with the CUE points and their lengths or their name. © 2000

Removing a TAKE from the PLAYLIST •
Use the ‘ ’ and ‘ ’ keys to go to the TAKE you wish to remove.
•
Select DEL to remove the TAKE from the PLAYLIST.
Adding a TAKE to the PLAYLIST •
Go to the PLAYLIST edit screen. Use the ‘ ’ and ‘ ’ keys to go to the row below the position where you wish to insert the TAKE.
•
Select INS. The TAKELIST appears.
•
Use the ‘ ’ and ‘ ’ keys to choose the TAKE you wish to add to the PLAYLIST. Select [A=ADD] or press INS.
Linking up TAKES in the PLAYLIST •
Select [C=LINK]. An asterisk appears behind the TAKE name. This means that the next fragment is linked up to this one, and the fragments will playback successively as a whole.

Use [D=SOFT] to indicate that the TAKE should fade in and out automatically at playback.
•
Select [A=SAVE] to store the settings.
Playing back the PLAYLIST Press PLAYLIST Use PLAY or PAUSE to start the next TAKE from the PLAYLIST. During playback, the ReporterMate will go into the PAUSE mode when it reaches the end of the take. Speak a linking text if you so wish. The next take is ready for PLAYBACK. Press PAUSE or PLAY to resume playback. During PAUSE, the microphone is automatically on (if the microphone control is open), during PLAYBACK it is automatically off. © 2000

Establishing connections (ISDN/PSTN)
•
ISDN: Use the ISDN cable and ISDN connector at the rear side.
•
PSTN (telephone line): use the special adapter cable with a telephone connector on one end, and connect it to the COMBI AUDIO connector at the rear side of the ReporterMate.
•
Select ‘CALL AUDIO’.
•
Select LAST (last number dialed), MANUAL (to dial manually), or ADDRESSBOOK (to dial a number from the address book).
•
Select [A=OK].
•
If you select ‘MANUAL’, you are asked to enter the desired number and correct profile (ISDN: live MPEG, PSTN: live phoneline).
•
If you select ADDRESSBOOK, choose the desired number from the list.
•
Select [A=OK].
•
Now, the connection will be established.
•
To disconnect the connection, select ‘END AUDIO’.

Transferring audio to the studio
•
Connect the headphone and open the corresponding level control.
•
Switch off the internal loudspeaker (using the ON SPKR OFF switch).
•
Connect the microphone to MIC/LINE 1 and open the corresponding level control.
•
Check if you can hear your voice in the headphone. Adjust the controls mentioned above, if necessary.
•
Establish a connection (ISDN or PSTN) with the studio.
•
Adjust the volume of the return signal in relationship to the level of your own contribution using the ‘LOCAL/CUE’
•
Have the desired audio standing by for transfer (PLAYLIST or raw audio).
•
Select PLAY. The microphone is automatically turned off during playback.
•
If not all TAKES in the PLAYLIST are linked to each other, the ReporterMate will pause and the microphone can be used again.
•
Select STOP to end playback. You can now use the microphone again.
(Recording) Telephone interview over ISDN •
When plugged in to ISDN, a telephone call is possible by pressing CALL PHONE.
•
Follow the same procedure as for CALL AUDIO (see no. 3).
•
Adjust the level of the interviewee with MIC/LINE2 control.
•
Press RECORD to record the interview.

Voice-Over If you want to speak ‘live’ over recorded audio (e.g. for translation), use the Voice-Over function. Make sure that ‘faderstart’ is enabled (default) in the AUDIO SETTINGS menu. •
Establish a connection with the studio.
•
Select PLAYLIST to have the desired fragments standing by.
•
Select ‘V/OVER’. The green ‘V/OVER’ LED will now light up and will remain lit.
•
Turn the MIC/LINE 2 control to start the PLAYLIST and to set the playback volume.
•
Microphone is plugged into MIC/LINE1. The volume is set with the MIC/LINE1 control.
•
Speak your ‘live’ text into the microphone.
•
Closing and opening MIC/LINE2 control will start the next item from the PLAYLIST

Replacing internal batteries
Use six model ‘C’ batteries (also known as Babycell or HR14). Use only new, rechargeable NiMH batteries. If necessary you can use rechargeable NiCd batteries (they will also be charged), but the battery indication LEDs will not be accurate with this type of battery. Alkaline and other non-rechargeable batteries are not suitable for use in the ReporterMate. •
Slide the coverlid of the battery compartment towards the left to open.
•
Remove the empty batteries and insert six new and identical batteries in the proper order. Refer to the illustration on the bottom of the ReporterMate.
In order to minimize power consumption, you may choose to enter the ReporterMate into ‘SLEEP’ mode. If SLEEP (or PAUSE) is selected, the ReporterMate becomes active again.
