RITE-HITE FANS CASE STUDY A PROACTIVE APPROACH Revolution Fans lower energy costs, improve morale at Network Global Logistics Network Global Logistics (NGL) is a third-party logistics company that takes a proactive approach to all aspects of its business. As winter approached in late 2009, it wanted to get a handle on the escalating cost of natural gas used to heat the company’s 80,000-square-foot Indianapolis distribution center. Equally important was the goal to more effectively cool the loading dock area of the facility during the warm, muggy summer months. Temperatures at the dock would often climb as high as 105 degrees F, creating an uncomfortable work environment – and a situation that threatened the operation’s productivity. This mixing effect creates a much more uniform air temperature. It’s also less of a burden on the heating system, saving on energy. When the weather is warm, the fans create a gentle breeze that helps keep employees cool. All good from the start The Revolution Fans delivered solid results from the get-go, says William Borst, Director of East Coast Warehouse Operations of NGL’s Indianapolis distribution center. Mr. Borst says the fans were largely responsible for a 50 percent decrease in the cost of natural gas – in the first month of operation alone. “The reduced spend allowed us to post positive financial numbers, which is definitely good news for us all” Mr. Borst says, adding that employees especially appreciate the contribution the fans make to the work environment. “The effect on employee morale has been nothing short of amazing,” he says. “The operating group is actually looking forward to the summer season, which is unlike before when everyone knew the high warehouse temperatures and lack of air circulation would pose a significant challenge.” Looking in the right places NGL looked to Rite-Hite Corporation for a solution and found it in the state-of-the-art Revolution® Fan. In early 2010, it installed four of the High Volume, Low Speed (HVLS) fans in the facility’s loading dock staging area. The Revolution Fan features four aluminum Propell-Aire™ blades, which vary in width and pitch angle along their entire length. The unique design moves air more consistently across the whole blade, with one fan covering up to 22,000 square feet of space. During the winter, warm air near the ceiling is gently pushed back down toward the floor where it then moves horizontally a few feet above the floor. The air eventually rises to the ceiling where it is cycled downward again. Mr. Borst says the Revolution Fan was easy to install since it uses steel universal mounting brackets. The mounting system includes a beam clamp, motor housing, stabilization cables and a three-way motor-to-hub safety connection. “The installation process was a two-step event with the install and wiring, and it didn’t interfere with our operation,” he says. “As an Operations Manager, I found that to be an unexpected positive event.” About NGL NGL offers mission-critical critical transportation, next flight out, same-day ground, service-parts management and warehousing and fulfillment services.
