Request for Information 239 4706 - Wilkes University - New Science Center 150-180 South River Street Wilkes-Barre, PA RFI #: 239 Project # 4706 Tel: (570) 408-6305 Importance: Fax: (570) 408-6304 Date Created: 8/27/2012 Subject Discipline Brick parapet details, flashing & brick pattern joint layout Architectural Author Company From Author RFI Number Casler Masonry, Inc. Dan Cerro Co-Respondent Question Date Required: 9/3/2012 1. The X-Seal Veneer anchor can not be used at the at the backside of the parapet for masonry veneer anchoring because there is no insulation. Is it acceptable to use the DW-10HS (product data attached) at these locations? 2. Is it acceptable to 4" CMU below the roof counter flashing (Roofers Material) as shown in detail 5/A314? 3. There is no thru-wall flashing (Textroflash) shown on detail 5/A314 over counter flashing. Is thru-wall flashing required? 4. The checker board pattern shown on detail 11/A503 causes straight joints vertically up the wall. What is the joint treatment (mortar or caulk) at the straight joints as I see these joints are prone to cracking? Answer Company Answered By SaylorGregg Architects Tom Breslin Date Answered: 8/30/2012 Answer 1. The proposed DW-10HS anchor is acceptable. 2. 4" CMU is acceptable at concealed areas below the counter flashing. 3. Provide adhered thru-wall flashing to prevent water from ponding behind the brick at the roof level. 4. See attached cSK-30 showing the checker board area updated to reflect the changes made on cSK-17a and cSK-17b (in response to RFI 148). As the checker board area is under cover, north facing and only 2'-4" wide the stresses on the joints should be less than in other areas of the building. The intention is that the area have horizontal reinforcing, mortar joints with soft joints at the relieving angles. If Casler has specific recommendations for alternate installation please let me know.
