USB JACK The USB Jack is used to download or upload MIDI information. The USB Jack provides for a no hassle driver installation, just plug into your Mac or PC and the operating system finds and installs all necessary components and the Rhodes appears as a USB MIDI device. Windows XP, Vista or any Mac OS X is needed for this. USB MIDI information is bi-directional so you can download or upload patch information for quick patch advance during live performance. B. MIDI IN, OUT and THRU JACKS The MIDI In, Out and Thru jacks are wired in the standard configuration but in addition, MIDI can be mixed to both MIDI Out and USB, while data received from USB can be transmitted to MIDI Out. C. STERO HEADPHONE JACK Used to monitor your piano through most brands of stereo headphones, the level of the headphone jack is determined by the VOLUME control on the piano preamplifier. (You will not hear MIDI sounds from this jack.) D. EFFECTS LOOP The EFFECTS RETURN jack is used when processing the raw signal of the piano through effects devises. 2. The EFFECTS SEND jack sends a signal from the piano to any high impedance effects device such as a stompbox, when used in conjunction with the EFFECTS RETURN. This jack may also be used to send a high impedance signal out of the piano uncolored by the piano preamplifier. 1. E. STEREO UNBALANCED OUTPUTS Labeled Left and Right, these two audio outputs provide stereo unbalanced signals effected by the preamp, to the Rhodes Powered Speaker Platforms, as well as other types of stereo amplifiers. F. STEREO BALANCED XLR OUTPUTS These two outputs labeled Left and Right provide stereo balanced XLR outputs from the output of the piano preamplifier. These jacks can be used to send stereo signals to any device with XLR inputs such as mixing consoles. G. POWER INPUT JACK The Power Input jack is used to connect the RHODES POWER SUPPLY. The Rhodes Power Supply provides the voltages necessary to operate both the piano preamplifier and the MIDI system. Make sure the power supply plug is fully inserted into the Power Input Jack. The connector can only be inserted one way. Pay close attention to the pin arrangement on the connector to insure proper insertion. top DO NOT FORCE THE PLUG INTO THE POWER INPUT JACK CONNECTOR OR DAMAGE MAY OCCUR! RHODES ACTIVE PREAMP The Rhodes Active Preamp features state of the art electronics with FET input technology and ultra high quality, low noise components. Years in the making, the Active Series Preamp offers the musician a new level of tonal versatility never before heard from any previous Rhodes piano. A B1 B2 B3 B4 C1 C2 A. VOLUME CONTROL The Volume Control adjusts the level of signal coming from the output of the piano preamplifier. This signal appears at the unbalanced stereo and balanced stereo XLR jacks that are located on the side panel connector located on the left side of the piano. B. EQUALIZER SECTION The Equalizer Section consists of four controls: 1. LO CONTROL The Low Control allows the musician to boost or cut bass frequencies by + /15 db @ 100Hz. B2. MID CONTROL The Mid Control allows the musician to boost or cut midrange frequencies by + /- 15db as determined by the FREQ. Control. B3. FREQ CONTROL The Freq Control adjusts the frequency of the MID CONTROL. The frequency can be adjusted to operate from 100Hz to 8KHz. B4. HI CONTROL The Hi Control allows the musician to boost or cut treble frequencies by + /15db @ 10KHz. C. TREMOLO SECTION The Tremolo Section consists of two controls: C1. SP The SP Control adjusts the speed of the tremolo circuit. C2. INT The INT Control adjusts the intensity of the tremolo circuit. Pull this knob out to activate the tremolo. A blue light will flash behind the INT Control showing the rate of the tremolo. SUSTAIN PEDAL and ROD The Sustain Pedal is attached to the piano by inserting the bayonet fittings and adjustable push rod into the openings under the piano and at the top of the pedal housing. Turn the fitting clockwise until it locks into place. Only the RHODES POWER SUPPLY can be used in order for the piano preamplifier and MIDI to function. The IEC / AC Input connector on the power supply can be used with any AC input voltage from 100 VAC to 240 VAC. In case of emergency, if for any reason the power supply or the piano preamplifier does not function, a signal can be taken directly from the piano via the EFFECTS SEND jack. See section D. Please contact your local Rhodes dealer for a replacement power supply. H. ON / OFF SWITCH The On / Off switch is used to turn the piano preamplifier on or off. When switched on, the rocker switch will be in the down position. MIDI CONTROLS A B C D A. PITCH BEND and MODULATION WHEELS These controls allow you send pitch and modulation wheel messages to MIDI and USB. B. 2X20 CHARACTER LCD SCREEN The LCD Screen allows you to view all patch information and make adjustments quickly and easily. C. PUSH BUTTON ENCODER The Encoder Button sets parameters and adjustments. D. VOLUME CONTROL The Volume Control adjusts the volume of all USB & MIDI devices, totally independent of your Rhodes Piano volume. RHODES ACTIVE MIDI SYSTEM The Rhodes MIDI system allows you to control external equipment or send MIDI signals to your computer using USB. Additionally, it can serve as a USB MIDI interface if you are interfacing non-USB MIDI equipment. To control external equipment, like synthesizers or samplers, power up your Rhodes piano and connect the MIDI out jack of the piano to the MIDI IN of your device and/or connect your computer via USB. This is all it takes to make your new Rhodes Active/MIDI the most dynamic and expressive keyboard controller ever! Not to mention having the ability to mix these sounds digital sounds with the famous sound of the REAL Rhodes Mark 7 SPECIAL FEATURES 1. USER INTERFACE Use the 2x40 character LCD screen, dedicated Volume knob, and endless MIDI Data Encoder knob with push switch to control the MIDI and USB section of your piano. 2. EDITING: Pushing the MIDI Data encoder knob toggles between the selecting of parameter and editing of parameter value. This is indicated by a tiny arrow on the right side of the LCD as shown. If the arrow is on the upper line, turning the encoder will select the parameters. The lower line indicates that a parameter value can be changed. P1 1 zone channel < Z1 l 1 P1 l zone channel Z1 l 1 < 3. VOLUME The MIDI Volume knob controls the volume level of external MIDI and USB devices using standard MIDI controller messages. These messages will be sent on all channels and on all USB and MIDI Out ports simultaneously. 4. PATCH ORGANIZATION The MIDI system consists of 50 patches which control what which messages will be sent to MIDI and USB. Patches can be edited, renamed and stored. Each patch can have up to four zones to control different instruments on different channels. Each zone has its own MIDI channel, port and other parameters. This is especially useful during live- performance patch changing. 5. SELECTING A PATCH After powering up, patches 1 through 50 can be selected by the encoder. The patch number is shown in the lower line of the LCD. P1 l select Patch l Init Patch < 6. PATCH PARAMETERS Pushing the indicator to the top line allows you to access the patch parameters. These can all be altered when the indicator is on the lower line. P1 l routing (off {USB>MIDI}{MIDI>USB}{MIDI< >USB}) Here you can control what the piano should do with incoming MIDI messages. off = Incoming MIDI messages are discarded USB > MIDI = Incoming USB messages are sent to MIDI MIDI > USB = Incoming MIDI messages are sent to USB MIDI < > USB = Incoming MIDI messages are sent to USB and incoming USB messages are sent to MIDI 7. ZONES Each patch can have up to four zones for creating splits, layers or velocity switches. Here you can adjust how many zones you want. P1 l # of zones l < The next zone can be selected for further editing here. Note that all zones are active simultaneously. The selection made here is only for editing of zone parameters. The selected zone is also shown in the lower left corner of the LCD throughout zone editing. P1 l zone select Z1 l < Zones can transmit on the MIDI port, the USB port or on both. When set to “ off ”, this zone is inactive and no messages are sent. P1 l zone transmit Z1 l MIDI + USB < Here the MIDI channel is assigned to the zone. P1 l zone channel Z1 l 1 < In order to realize splits, the active key range can be reduced. You can set both the lowest and the highest key to be transmitted by this zone. Off = No pressure data transmitted Channel = Channel pressure transmitted Polyphonic = Pressure transmitted for each key individually (some midi modules will not respond to this function) P1 l zone transpose Z1 l + 0 < P1 l zone velocity Z1 l normal Key transposition of zones in semi-tones The following are selectable velocity curves to best fit your personal style of playing: Normal Hard Soft Medium = = = = Velocity with more compressed dynamic levels. Velocity with greater levels of dynamics. Velocity with little dynamic range for loud playing. Velocity with slightly compressed dynamics. 8. PATCH NAMING AND STORING In this screen you can edit the NAME of the patch you want to store. The active character position will blink and can be adjusted by turning the data encoder while it is being pushed. P1 l Patch Name l Init. Patch < Here you can finally STORE the edited patch. When the indicator is on the lower line, you can choose a new location as a destination for storage. To execute the STORE function, push the encoder button and hold until successful store operation is indicated. P1 l press l Store l long l to P1 ? < 9. SETUP AND ADJUSTMENT The Rhodes MIDI System needs to be adjusted for proper operation. The operating system firmware allows easy adjustment and updating of all components. However, to prevent users from changing this sensitive data, access to this service mode is restricted. To enter the service mode, hold down the Data Encoder knob while powering on. (a). The LCD screen will look like this∇ Enter Service Key Enter (2)-clockwise, (7)-counterclockwise, and finally (1)-clockwise. (This is like a combination lock. If you go too far, just keep going. The numbers will start over after [9].) (b). The next screen will look like this∇ 271 Enter Service Key Press data encoder knob now to enter the service mode. (c). The next screen will look like this∇ Previous Adjustment Will be lost! ∆This is just a warning message that all previous adjustments will be lost. Press the data encoder knob. (d). The next screen will look like this∇ Keys & Bend relaxed In this screen, the relaxed states of all keys, the Pitch and Modulation wheels, and the pedal are recorded. Since pedal positioning and hight may vary, especially when using the piano without a speaker platform, the hight of the pedal will also be detected during this procedure. It is therefore essential that the pedal be connected properly during this entire procedure. Make sure nothing is touched on the piano and press again after a second, advancing to the next LCD screen. (e). The next screen will look like this∇ Keys down Using the binding of a legal pad, very carefully press groups of keys down very slowly and with as little pressure as possible, until all keys have been pressed. This procedure tells the system where the bottoms of the keys are, and enables it to assign appropriate velocities and aftertouch to each key uniformly. It does not matter how often keys are pressed, so if you are in doubt about a certain range, just press again. Uniform pressure is extremely important in this step! If you press any key with too much force, the note may not track properly. Use especially great care during this step. However, if performed incorrectly, this can be reset again by powering down and starting over from the “Enter Service Key” screen. Press data encoder knob. The next screen shows the values of each midi function. (f). The next screen will look like this∇ PB MW PD VL extremes XX XX XX XX Here, all extreme values of the MIDI Volume control, Pitch/Modulation wheels, and Pedal are recorded. Press the pedal fully down and release. Move MIDI Volume control, and Pitch/Modulation wheels to both upper and lower extreme positions. When finished, press data encoder and advance to the next step. (g). The next screen will look like this∇ Pedal to sweet spot position XXXX This screen shows the “Sweet Spot” of the Sustain Pedal. This tells the system exactly where your physical Rhodes Piano dampers escape from it’s tines. It is important that your MIDI module sustain function (64) see this release at exactly the same time as your piano’s physical dampers. Hold this “Sweet Spot” position with your foot and Press the data encoder knob to enter this position. (h). The next screen will look like this∇ Permanently store Adjustment? This is just a final safety screen, just press again to store or power off to keep old adjustments. For simplicity, let’s assume you pressed again: (i). The next screen will look like this∇ **** Adjustment **** **** stored! **** CONGRATULATIONS!! You have reached the final step! The piano will go into normal operation now and you should check if the adjustments are made properly. TUNING and ADJUSTMENTS Your Rhodes piano is a hand crafted instrument that is tuned and adjusted by expert technicians at the Rhodes factory. Further tuning or adjustments may be performed by removing the lid screws at the front bottom corners of the piano and lifting the lid. The Rhodes piano produces its unique sound by the use of a vibrating “Tine” which functions similar to a tuning fork. When a key is pushed a hammer strikes the tine causing it to vibrate. The vibrating tines are amplified by a series of magnetic pickups. Tone Resonator Screw Tine Tuning Spring There are three basic areas of adjustment: 1. TIMBRE ADJUSTMENT Adjustments to the timbre or tone of each tine may be accomplished by adjusting the front tone resonator screw. DO NOT adjust the rear screw. Raising the tine at or above the center of the pickup will allow the pickup to amplify the Fundamental tone or Harmonic overtones produced by the tine allowing the musician to customize their sound. 2. TUNING Tuning is accomplished by sliding the Tuning Spring located on the tine forward or back to raise or lower the pitch. 3. PICKUP ADJUSTMENT Adjustment of the pickups is accomplished by loosening the pickup screw and sliding the pickup closer or away from the tine. This will increase or decrease the volume level of that note. Pickup Screw HARP ASSEMBLY The Harp Assembly consists of a metal frame that holds the wooden pickup rail and the wooden tine rail. The Harp Assembly is mounted to a hinge strap and may be lifted for ease of service and adjustment. To lift the Harp Assembly remove the harp screws located on the top sides of the frame. The harp can then be lifted from the front and placed in an upright position for service. Harp Frame Harp Screws Limited Warranty 90 DAYS LABOR 1 YEAR PARTS Rhodes Music Corporation, hereafter referred to as Rhodes, warrants to the original consumer that the product will be free from defects in materials and / or workmanship for the periods indicated. This warranty is applicable to all models. If during the first ninety days that immediately follows the purchase date, your new Rhodes product covered by this warranty is found to have a defect in materials and / or workmanship, Rhodes and / or its authorized representative will repair such defect without charge for parts or labor. If parts should be required after this ninety day period but within the one year period that immediately follows the purchase date, Rhodes will, subject to the terms of this warranty, supply these parts without charge. However, charges for labor, and / or miscellaneous expenses incurred are the responsibility of the consumer. Rhodes reserves the right to utilize reconditioned parts in repairing these products and / or to use reconditioned units as warranty replacement. THIS WARRANTY IS THE ONLY EXPRESS WARRANTY WHICH RHODES MAKES IN CONNECTION WITH THIS PRODUCT. ANY IMPLIED WARRANTY APPLICABLE TO THE PRODUCT, INCLUDING THE WARRANTY OF MERCHANTABILITY IS LIMITED TO THE DURATION OF THE EXPRESS WARRANTY. RHODES EXCLUDES AND SHALL NOT BE LIABLE IN ANY EVENT FOR INCIDENTAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES. WARNING! TO REDUCE THE RISK OF FIRE OR ELECTRIC SHOCK, DO NOT EXPOSE THIS APPLIANCE TO RAIN OR MOISTURE. Some states do not allow limitations that relate to implied warranties and / or the exclusions of incidental or consequential damages. Therefore, these limitations and exclusions may not apply to you. This warranty gives you specific legal rights. You may also have other rights that vary from state to state. CONSUMER RESPONSIBILITIES If Warranty service should be required, it is necessary that the consumer assume certain responsibilities. 1. Contact the Customer Service Department of the retailer selling the product, or any retail outlet authorized to sell the product for assistance. You may also contact Rhodes directly. 2. Deliver the unit to be serviced under warranty to the retailer selling the product, an authorized service center, or factory authorized technician, or to Rhodes with an explanation of the problem. Please be prepared to provide proof of purchase date (sales receipt, credit card copy, etc.) when requesting service and / or parts under warranty. 3. Shipping and / or insurance costs are the responsibility of the consumer.* Units shipped for service should be packed securely. *Repaired units will be returned PREPAID if warranty service is required within the first ninety days. IMPORTANT: Do not ship anything to ANY location without prior authorization. A Return Authorization (RA) will be issued that has a tracking number assigned that will expedite the servicing of your unit and provide a tracking system if needed. 4. Your owners manual contains important safety and operating instructions. It is your responsibility to be aware of the contents of this manual and to follow all safety precautions. EXCLUSIONS This warranty does not apply to paint or finishes, tuning, voicing, regulation or alignment of case and hinges of any Rhodes product and is the responsibility of the consumer. This warranty does not apply to electrical or mechanical noise which could arise from the piano or pedal / damper mechanism, amplified through the pickups or any other external or internal amplification or noise and interference caused from other keyboards, computers or interface devices. This warranty does not apply to units whose trade name, trademark, and / or ID numbers have been altered, defaced, exchanged, removed, and / or to failures and / or damages that may occur as a result of: Neglect, abuse, stress on top of the piano lid / cover, modification or exposure to extremes in temperature or humidity. Improper repair or maintenance by any person who is not a service representative of a retail outlet authorized by Rhodes to sell the product, an authorized service center, or an authorized service representative of Rhodes. Any of these actions will void this warranty. This warranty is only applicable to units sold by retailers authorized by Rhodes to sell these products in the U.S.A., the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. This warranty is not applicable in other possessions or territories of the U.S.A. or in any other country.
