INTRODUCTION
The m o d e l J - 4 0 R o t a r y M o w e r is designed to moimt on m o d e l s 210, 220, 222 and 224 c o m p a c t t r a c t o r s above s e r i a l n u m b e r 9646800. Model J - 4 4 R o t a r y M o w e r s mount on m o d e l s 210, 220, 222, 224, 442, 444 and 446 t r a c t o r s above s e r i a l n u m b e r 9646800 and m o d e l s 644 and 646 l o a d e r tractors. The m o d e l J - 4 6 M o w e r will mount on the s a m e t r a c t o r s a s the J - 4 4 , h o w e v e r , it i s not r e c o m m e n d e d for the m o d e l 210 o r 220. T h e s e m o w e r s can be moimted on Model 220 and 222 t r a c t o r s p r i o r to s e r i a l n u m b e r 9646800 by using the Model H38 Adapter Kit. T h e Model H39 Adapter Kit is r e q u i r e d to m o u n t t h e s e m o w e r s on Model 442 and 444 c o m p a c t t r a c t o r s p r i o r to s e r i a l n u m b e r 9646800. T h e Adapter Kits a r e available a s optional equipment. T h e definitions "Right, Left, F r o n t a n d R e a r " a s u s e d throughout this m a n u a l r e l a t e to the t r a c t o r and r o t a r y m o w e r a s the o p e r a t o r is s e a t e d facing f o r w a r d in the n o r m a l o p e r a ting position on the t r a c t o r .
Always m a k e c e r t a i n t h e t r a c t o r a t t a c h m e n t d r i v e clutch is d i s e n g a g e d b e f o r e s t a r t i n g t h e engine and when t r a n s p o r t i n g the r o t a r y mower.
OPERATING CONTROLS
T h e p r i n c i p l e c o m p o n e n t s and c o n t r o l s of y o u r r o t a r y m o w e r a r e identified in F i g u r e 1 with the s a m e d e s c r i p t i o n u s e d t h r o u g h out this m a n u a l . All c o n t r o l s a r e conveniently located n e a r t h e o p e r a t o r ' s position on the t r a c t o r . T h e m o w e r b l a d e s a r e p l a c e d in motion by e n gaging the t r a c t o r a t t a c h m e n t d r i v e clutch l e v e r . T h e d e s i r e d mowing height can be quickly adjusted with the height s e l e c t i o n

O P E R A T I N G METHODS AND T I P S
1. Keep m o w e r b l a d e s s h a r p and b a l a n c e d a s c o v e r e d in A d j u s t m e n t s and M a i n t e n a n c e Section. 2. O p e r a t e engine at a p p r o x i m a t e l y 3/4 t h r o t t l e and r e g u l a t e the g r o u n d s p e e d T r a v e l L e v e r a c c o r d i i ^ to mowing c o n ditions. As a g e n e r a l r u l e , s e t the t h r o t t l e a s low a s p r a c t i c a l to obtain m a x i m u m fuel e c o n o m y but high enough to avoid engine lug-down o r l a b o r which could c a u s e o v e r h e a t i n g . U n l e s s g r a s s is unusually light, a l w a y s o p e r a t e in "Low" speed range,
a r e a . F i g u r e 3 . When mowing in this m a n n e r , a final s t r i p of m u l c h e d c l i p pings about t h r e e to four feet wide will r e m a i n n e a r the c e n t e r of the lawn. T h i s c a n be easily r a k e d up to l e a v e a well groomed appearance. 5. T r i m m i n g will b e n e a t e r and c l o s e r by u s i i ^ the right s i d e of the m o w e r s i n c e the clippings will be d i s c h a r g e d away f r o m the object. Also the safety shield o v e r the d i s c h a r g e opening p r e v e n t s mowing a s c l o s e to o b j e c t s .
3. If g r a s s i s heavy and h i g h e r than n o r m a l , r e s u l t s can b e i m p r o v e d by mowing t w i c e . Make the f i r s t cut with the m o w e r s e t h i g h e r than n o r m a l ; t h e n r e p e a t with the m o w e r s e t at d e s i r e d finished cut height. When mowing heavy g r a s s , a l w a y s d i s c h a r g e clippings a w a y f r o m t h e uncut area,

7. T h e t r a c t o r m e c h a n i c a l o r h y d r a u l i c lift l e v e r is u s e d to r a i s e the m o w e r into t r a n s p o r t and to l o w e r it into cutting position. A slight pulling p r e s s u r e on the m e c h a n i c a l l e v e r will p e r m i t the r e l e a s e button to be m o r e e a s i l y d e p r e s s e d . T h e "Height Selection" s e t tings a r e explained in the A D J U S T M E N T AND MAINTENANCE s e c t i o n which follows.

A D J U S T M E N T S AND M A I N T E N A N C E
Check and adjust the t e n s i o n on a new b e l t after t h e f i r s t 20 m i n u t e s and the next h o u r of mowing s i n c e it is n o r m a l for a belt to s t r e t c h slightly during its initial r i m - i n p e r i o d . To i n c r e a s e the belt t e n s i o n , t u r n the adjusting c r a n k in a c o u n t e r c l o c k w i s e d i r e c t i o n while facing t h e front of t h e t r a c t o r . It is a l s o n e c e s s a r y to t u r n t h e adjusting c r a n k c o i m t e r c l o c k w i s e a s f a r a s it will go in o r d e r to a t t a c h o r r e m o v e t h e mounting b r a c k e t from m o d e l 210, 220 222 and 224 t r a c t o r s . To d e c r e a s e t h e b e l t tension o r to i n s t a l l o r r e m o v e t h e belt, t u r n the adjusting c r a n k c l o c k wise.
1, Height Selection L e v e r : See F ^ u r e 4 T h e m o w e r cutting height is adjustable from 1 - 1 / 2 " to 3 - 1 / 2 " with 1/2" s e t tings a v a i l a b l e in between. To change the cutting height, pull o u t w a r d on t h e s e l e c t i o n k n o b , m o v e the l e v e r up o r down to d e s i r e d height setting and p u s h b a c k into m a t c h i n g hole. R e l i e v e the weight on the s e l e c t i o n l e v e r by r a i s i n g m o w e r into t r a n s p o r t position b e f o r e adjusting the cutting height. Always o p e r a t e the m o w e r with the gauge wheels on t h e ground and all weight off the m o w e r lift links to obtain a level and uniform cut. FORE-AFT DECK LEVER A D J U S T M E N T LINKS

To r a i s e the front of the m o w e r , f i r s t loosen the o u t e r nut on each link and then equally t u r n the i n n e r nuts r e a r w a r d . To lower the front of the m o w e r , loosen the i n n e r nut on each link and t u r n the o u t e r nuts f o r e w a r d . Check b l a d e heights a s c l o s e to the front and r e a r edges of the m o w e r a s p o s s i b l e . D i s t a n c e between the b l a d e s and the level s u r f a c e should be the s a m e at both front and r e a r e d g e s of m o w e r ,
3 , M o w e r Blade B o l t s : Before o p e r a t i n g the m o w e r for t h e f i r s t t i m e , check the bolts holding the b l a d e s . T H E Y MUST BE T I G H T . After the f i r s t 8 h o u r s o p e r a t i n g , check t h e m again. Whenever t h e b l a d e s a r e r e m o v e d , it is a good p r a c t i c e to i n s t a l l new l o c k w a s h e r s u n d e r the b o l t s , and again check t i g h t n e s s after n e x t 8 h o u r s operation, 4. Engine M a i n t e n a n c e : C o m p l e t e t r a c t o r and engine m a i n t e n a n c e i n s t r u c t i o n s a r e outlined on p a g e 12 and 13 of your t r a c t o r O p e r a t o r ' s Manual, When m o w i n g , give p a r t i c u l a r attention to t h e a r e a s which a r e affected by g r a s s a c c u m u l a t i o n . Check and b r u s h off the engine a i r intake s c r e e n and heat e x c h a n g e r fins DAILY. Also check and clean the engine a i r c l e a n e r e l e m e n t daily a s explained on p a g e 21 of y o u r t r a c t o r m a n u a l . If mowing u n d e r p a r t i c u l a r l y d r y o r dusy conditions a " P r e c l e a n e r , " p a r t n u m b e r K 0 2 3 7 4 2 1 , i s available t h r o u g h y o u r J I C a s e D e a l e r which fits o v e r the r e g u l a r e l e m e n t . M o w e r s i d e to side leveling is a d j u s t e d at the f a c t o r y . H o w e v e r , should r e a d j u s t m e n t b e c o m e n e c e s s a r y it m a y b e done by loosening the two c a r r i a g e bolts on t h e right hand side that s e c u r e the g a u g e wheel c a r r i e r to the d e c k . T h e h o l e s m a y b e slotted if additional a d j u s t m e n t is r e q u i r e d . After o b taining a level position, r e t i g h t e n the carriage bolts. 7, M o w e r Gauge W h e e l s : S e e F i g u r e 7, R e m o v e the gauge w h e e l s after each 10 h o u r s of mowing and l u r i c a t e the b u s h i n g s and axle b o l t s with c h a s s i s grease. As an a l t e r n a t e to g r e a s e , t h e w h e e l s can b e o i l e d each four h o u r s of o p e r a t i o n . M a k e s u r e the oil p e n e t r a t e s to the inside of the b u s h i n g s by holding the d e c k a t a s l a n t e d angle while l u b r i c a t i n g .

After a b l a d e is s h a r p e n e d , check it for b a l a n c e by i n s e r t i n g a dowel o r bolt in the c e n t e r hole and p l a c e b e tween two level e d g e s a s shown in F i g u r e 10. A b a l a n c e d b l a d e will c e n t e r itself so the cutting e d g e s a r e p a r a l l e l with t h e e d g e s ,
T h e d e c k b e l t is a u t o m a t i c a l l y t e n sioned by a s p r i n g loaded idler pulley and does not r e q u i r e a d j u s t m e n t . If a new belt i s installed, p l a c e it a r o u n d the t h r e e s p i n d l e pulleys a s i l l u s t r a t e d . P l a c e a 9 / 1 6 " box w r e n c h o v e r the h e x nut on the i d l e r pulley and pivot the pulley t o w a r d s the front of the m o w e r until the belt can be e a s i l y placed o v e r the b a c k side of the i d l e r a s shown. Check to m a k e s u r e the belt is not r o l l e d o r t w i s t e d b e f o r e replacing c o v e r s .
CAUTION Unbalanced b l a d e s a r e a h a z a r d and will c a u s e p r e m a t u r e w e a r and f a i l u r e of b e a r i n g s and s p i n d l e s . If the b l a d e s cannot be b a l a n c e d by r e s h a r p e n i n g t h e m , r e p l a c e with new b l a d e s . 1 1 , C h e c k and c l e a n out the i n s i d e of the d e c k housing p e r i o d i c a l l y . R e m o v e any g r a s s w r a p p i n g s b e t w e e n the blade mounting p l a t e s and the s p i n d l e h o u s i n g s . A, Locate the t r a c t o r on a level s u r f a c e . Check t i r e s for equal and r e c o m m e n d e d p r e s s u r e s a s outlined on p a g e 7 of the tractor operator's manual.

Model 210, 220, 222, 224, 644 and 6 4 6 A s s e m b l e the two s h o r t e r links to t h e m o u n t i n g b r a c k e t and s e c u r e with c o t t e r p i n s . The slotted end of the links a r e to b e l a t e r connected to t r a c t o r lift levers.

With t h e t r a c t o r lift l e v e r s in t h e fully l o w e r e d position, p l a c e a plain w a s h e r on the clevis pins and install the lift links on the inside of the l e v e r s a s shown in F i g u r e 12. Lifting the m o w e r d e c k u p w a r d slightly will aid in aligning the h o l e s b e t w e e n the mounting b r a c k et and deck t a b s . Two b e l t s a r e p a c k a g e d w i t h M o d e l J 4 4 , 44'* and J 4 6 , 4 8 " m o w e r s . If mounting t h e s e m o w e r s on Model 210, 220, 222, 224 o r 644 t r a c t o r s , u s e the s h o r t e r belt. T h e l o n g e r belt m u s t be u s e d when the m o w e r is mounted on a Model 442, 444 o r 446 t r a c t o r . If mounting the m o w e r on the 646 wheel l o a d e r , d r i v e belt, p a r t n u m b e r C13184 is r e q u i r e d . This belt is not included with the mower.
