Riding on the smooth NH 8, via Ambala and Mandi, the bikers got their first taste of snow at Rohtang. Next, the route took them through Baralacha La and Sarchu, with a stopover at Pang. The high altitude ride, however, took its toll on the riders, and a quick health check was done to ensure that everyone was fit to continue on the journey. After this came the final leg of the ride, the last mile to Leh, crossing the vast More plains and Tanglang La pass, and finally, the best stretch of the ride from Upshi to Leh. However, due to a serious landslide which affected more than 400 people, the riders were not able to get to Khardung La, and instead decided to spend the night at Pangong Tso. The scenic landscapes meant that all cameras were put to good use. On the ride back from Leh to Srinagar, via Kargil, the riders stopped for a visit to the war museum. The bikers stayed for a day at Srinagar and then continued on to Amritsar, spending some time at the Golden Temple, before riding to Ahmedabad. On 16th June, the riders reached home, happy but exhausted, after the 15-day long ride. The journey might have ended, but they would cherish the memories forever. < To join more such rides from Ahmedabad, please get in touch with Puneet Singh Banga at [email protected] > .............................................................................................................................................................................................................................. 2 Mumbai to Mahad The monsoons arrived on the western coast and were in their prime when the riders from Mumbai decided to embark on a weekend ride down the west coast. Riding in rains has its own thrill, and on 1st September, a group of 39 die hard enthusiasts from the Bandra and Navi Mumbai showrooms got together and rode to Mahad. The ride started off down the NH 4 towards Lonavla, Amby Valley, and then via Tamhini ghats, the riders descended to Mangaon, cutting through the thick fog and mist. The next day, on 2nd September, they started on their journey back to Mumbai via Apti and Bhor. A 74-km long road from Mahad to Bhor passes Varandha Ghat, at an altitude of around 800 m. The ride along this route provided dramatic scenery, looking down the famous Konkan coast. By the time the riders rolled into Nerul, it was already dark, but no one felt even an ounce of fatigue, despite having covered a distance of almost 700 kms. < To join more such rides from Mumbai, please get in touch with Harshil Desai at [email protected] > .............................................................................................................................................................................................................................. 4 JULY | AUGUST | SEPTEMBER 2012 KEEP RIDING 3 Gandhidham to Pingleshwar This ride started from Adipur in Gandhidham, Gujarat, on 17th June and saw an impressive turnout of 33 Royal Enfield enthusiasts astride 28 motorcycles. The trip ended up being a memorable one for all the riders involved as the group covered close to 350 kms on this trip. The riders started at 7.30 am from N P Auto, the dealer in Gandhidham, and after riding close to 150 kms, reached Pingleshwar at 11.40 am. The Kutch region is known for its vast hinterlands and desolate terrain, and all the riders really enjoyed the adventurous landscape. After a meal and rest in the afternoon, the group started for the shimmering sands of Mandvi beach. Unsurprisingly, the sight of the beach proved to be too much of a temptation for the riders, and some of them actually rode on to the beach. After the fun, the group began their journey back, reaching Gandhidham by sundown. < To join more such rides from Gandhidham, please get in touch with Puneet Singh Banga at [email protected] > .............................................................................................................................................................................................................................. 4 Anand to Kabirwad This ride started from Royal Ridentity, the dealership in Anand, Gujarat, on 24th June. Early in the morning, half a dozen riders assembled in front of the showroom and took off on NH 8, towards Vadodara. Anand is a small town in Gujarat, where adventure and leisure motorcycling is slowly gaining popularity. After 70 kms of riding, everyone stopped for a hearty breakfast. Later, after crossing Nabibpur, the riders got off the National Highway, and on to a smaller track towards Kabirwad. The interior road was not only incredibly smooth but also unbelievably scenic. In the sweltering month of June, the first drops of the rain were welcomed by everyone. On reaching Kabirwad, the riders spent a few hours unwinding, before starting back for Anand, having covered a total distance of 278 kms on this ride. < To join more such rides from Anand, please get in touch with Puneet Singh Banga at [email protected] > .............................................................................................................................................................................................................................. 5 Gurgaon to Aravalli Hills The ride started off from the newly opened dealership Manzil Motors in Gurgaon, and around 45 enthusiasts showed up on 28 motorcycles for this ride. The riders halted for breakfast at the Camp Wild resort, just near Faridabad, and enjoyed the picturesque surroundings. After a sumptuous breakfast at the resort, the riders lined up their bikes together, and set off to explore the place. Being one of the first trips to have been organised from Gurgaon, a lot of enthusiastic bikers turned up with their equally enthused families. The weather too was perfect for a day out, and the sight of the majestic mountains amidst the vast greenery of the resort only made the riders want to stick around for longer. However, as dusk fell, they had no option but to depart and return to Gurgaon. < To join more such rides from Gurgaon, please get in touch with Anil Goyal at [email protected] > .............................................................................................................................................................................................................................. JULY | AUGUST | SEPTEMBER 2012 5 KEEP RIDING 6 Ahmedabad to Mahudi This ride started off from Sarabhai Motors, our dealership in Ahmedabad, in the silence of the early morning, which seemed to offset the collective sound of the thumpers. The first stop was at Panchvati Dhaba, where the riders grabbed a quick bite – piping hot bhajiya and chai. After grub, the riders rode to Mahudi, and on reaching there, visited the temple to offer prayers. The river Sabarmati is just about 5 kms away from here, and the riders had to ride through soft sand and mud to reach it, their wheels often getting stuck. Finally, on reaching the banks of the river, everyone rested for a while, and a few customary photographs later, were on their way back to Ahmedabad. < To join more such rides from Ahmedabad please get in touch with Puneet Singh Banga at [email protected] > .............................................................................................................................................................................................................................. 7 Ahmedabad to Jhanjhari Friendship is a beautiful bond, and when there is a shared passion for Royal Enfield motorcycles, this friendship turns into brotherhood. On Friendships’ Day, this August, around a hundred brothers rode out on their Bullets, from Ahmedabad to Jhanjhari, a picturesque waterfall in Gujarat. After chai, the group started out on the ride. Being a large group, a thorough gear check was done to ensure the safety of the group. Riding down the highway, and through winding country roads, the riders reached Jhanjhari in the afternoon. Once the bikers reached the waterfall, everyone decided to take a dip in the cool waters. After spending some time here, the riders packed up and headed back to the Royal Riders showroom, and finished off the day with a glass of refreshing butter milk. < To join more such rides from Ahmedabad please get in touch with Puneet Singh Banga at [email protected] > .............................................................................................................................................................................................................................. 8 Gurgaon to Alwar On an early morning in September, a group of 18 enthusiasts rode out from the Royal Enfield dealership in Gurgaon, towards Alwar. Riding down the NH8, the first stop the riders took was in Bhiwadi, where everyone grabbed some breakfast. After Bhiwadi, the riders continued towards Alwar, passing through the spectacular countryside, with pleasant weather urging them on. At Alwar, they stopped at the recently opened dealership M/s RS Motors, where the riders were welcomed and shown around the premises. After this, everyone rode to a popular resort nearby for lunch, where they swapped biking tales. After a few minutes of rest, the refreshed riders set back towards Gurgaon. < To join more such rides from Gurgaon please get in touch with Anil Goyal at [email protected] > .............................................................................................................................................................................................................................. 6 JULY | AUGUST | SEPTEMBER 2012 CLUB PROFILE Coffee & Motorcycling M ocha Bike Association or MBA, as it widely known, started as a small, tight-knit community of bikers in 2006, as a part of the Mocha – Coffee & Conversations brand of boundary-free clubs and communities. ...................................................................... Such sessions are regular at the Chennai and Chandigarh training centres. NEWS Free Service Camp in Gurgaon Monsoon Madness 2012 The seventh edition of the Monsoon Madness took place at Satara, Maharashtra, on 12th August. This event was originally started for motorcycling enthusiasts to take their bikes out during monsoons and test them on the slushy terrain, against lashing rains. Today, it has become one of the biggest non-competitive sporting events for motorcycling enthusiasts. A fair number of Royal Enfield enthusiasts from around Satara turned up, and members of some prominent motorcycling clubs also participated. Monsoon Madness kicked off with a customary flag-off. The motorcycles had to ride on a route charted out in advance. Some sections were fairly easy, while others proved more challenging, due to heavy rains. Some bikes required the additional assistance on getting stuck in the slush. Needless to say, the experience was an exciting one for everyone involved. A Free Service Camp was organised by Manzil Motors in Gurgaon in the month of July. A large number of customers availed of this offer and appreciated the initiative. This was part of the endeavour by Royal Enfield dealers to reach out to the customers in their areas. ......................................................... Solo ride to the top of the world Dear Editor, After I bought my Royal Enfield, I looked for a magazine that only had information and articles on the Royal Enfield motorcycle. I first encountered this magazine a year ago and have been a regular reader since then. I wonder why the magazine is not more regular. I love how The Beat covers men of a different breed, stories of rides which only exist in one’s wish list and a plethora of adventures. Finally, I decided to stop reading and start writing, and here I am with my personal story. This is a story of a person who never let himself forget that if you believe in yourself, you can even ride to Ladakh. And so the story unravels, when this man, on his Royal Enfield Classic 350cc, started off on a journey of 6,200 beautiful kilometres, 29 days of sheer joy, traversing borders of nine states, each with a different culture. After experiencing four types of weather, crossing three Union Territories, and two near death experiences later, this is my adventure, this is me and my story that completely changed my life! Ashwin Shetye, Vasco-da-Gama, Goa Response: Dear Ashwin, Thanks for the kind words of appreciation for our magazine, which caters specifically to the needs and wants of Royal Enfield enthusiasts. It is really commendable of you to have undertaken such an adventurous journey on your own, on your trusted steed. We are happy to hear how your Royal Enfield motorcycle and your never say die spirit of adventure made you discover Ladakh in a way you may not have imagined. We would definitely like to feature your adventure as part of our magazine, in the issues to come. Till then, keep riding.
