RSGPSPPS2 1PPS output GPS timing receiver The RSGPSPPS2 is a high performance timing receiver to supply 1PPS pulses to GPS guided frequency standards or other applications where an accurate 1PPS pulse is required. With it's easy to use RS232 and USB interface the user can manipulate the receiver characteristics and read important data. For timing applications the use of these interfaces is optional. The RSGPSPPS2 uses a dedicated timing GPS receiver to achieve the best possible performance.

The RSGPSPPS2 is a GPS receiver dedicated to deliver the most accurate 1PPS signal possible in a small formfactor and low current design. Via the two interfaces, USB and RS232, the user can monitor all parameters of the GPS receiver and change the settings including location information to accelerate the acquisition. Active and passive GPS antennas are supported, the selection is done with an internal jumper. Active antennas are preferred as they compensate for cable losses and increase the available signal strength. The unit is either powered from the controlling USB device or any 5VDC power source in case the RS232 interface is used.

Ex factory the GPS receiver is set for ~1:1 duty cycle of the 1PPS signal. This setting should never be changed as it impacts what cable length (capacitance) the output can drive. The receiver is also set for stationary use. The first time it is turned on it will take a lot longer to lock as it will precisely do location acquisition which is then stored in memory and be used from there on. This allows an accurate 1PPS output even with the reception of only one satellite. If the receiver shall be used in a mobile environment with changing locations it is better to switch to the mobile setting (variable location) via the control program.

an INWAVE AG brand Programming Interface RSGPSPPS2
The RSGPSPPS2 can be programmed via USB and RS232 (9600Bd, 8N1). In case RS232 is used the unit has to be powered externally from a 5V supply via the USB connector. The latest revisions of programming software, USB drivers, firmware and operating instructions can be downloaded from the website of the GPS core manufacturer at http://www.ublox.com. Use the settings for the LEA6T module. Caution: do not change the duty cycle of the 1PPS signal as deviating from the factory set 1:1 cycle May impact the transmission over longer cables!
Connecting the rear 1PPS outputs Connecting wires to the rear 1PPS outputs requires opening the enclosure. Remove the two screws on each side of the enclosure and take off the center part of the body shell. Push the wires through the slot of the rear panel and connect them to the connector.
As the 1PPS is pretty uncritical low cost cables like telephone wire can be used to distribute the 1PPS signal. Return the center part of the shell back into its position and install the 4 screws back. Do NOT overtighten them!
Changing the internal Lithium backup battery Changing the internal 2032 size Lithium battery requires opening the enclosure. Remove the two screws on each side of the enclosure and take off the center part of the body shell. Carefully remove the old battery and replace it with a new 2032 size one, plus side upwards. Return the center part of the shell back into its position and install the 4 screws back. Do NOT overtighten them!
Changing the antenna type (active/passive) Changing the type of antenna requires opening the enclosure. Remove the two screws on each side of the enclosure and take off the center part of the body shell. Close to the SMA GPS antenna connector is a 3pin 2.54mm spacing jumper. For an 3.3V active antenna the jumper has to be over the “left” two pins of the header, for 5V it has to connect the “right” two pins whereas it should be removed for a passive antenna. In case of a passive antenna the power supply is disconnected as some passive antennas have a DC short circuit which would short the internal supply. If the passive antenna to be used doesn't have a DC short the jumper can be left in any active antenna position. Return the center part of the shell back into its position and install the 4 screws back. Do NOT overtighten them!
