Commercial In Confidence DRS Technologies UK Ltd 1 Introduction Based on the very latest Intel Core™ i7 CPU technology, the DRS EP Range of high resolution, modular multi-function tactical Smart Displays provide leading edge computing and display capability for the most demanding environments including military tracked vehicles, on gun applications and warships. The EP range shares a common CPU/Input-Output processor module which is integrated with 10.4’’, 12.1’’, 15’’ or 17.3 HD” displays. This allows systems integrators the flexibility to mix and match the smart displays while maintaining a common processing architecture. Due to modular nature of the design and the internal mini PCIe slots these displays are easily customised to meet specific customer requirements.
Figure 1 - Vehicle Mounted RW104-EPs
Various display resolutions are available, ranging from the 1024 x 768 10.4’’ to a high resolution 1920 x 1080 17.3’’. All displays are direct sunlight readable and have a resistive touch screen. A variety of storage options are available, the workstation can accommodate up to 3 MSATA SSD devices, 4 USB 3.0 memory devices and option for 1 removable 1.8’’/2.5’’ drive. RAID 1 is supported on the MSATA interfaces. Secure and encrypted versions of the SSDs are available, whereby the security level of the data on the SSD is reduced by two levels when power is removed. It is also possible to provide secure or customised BIOS. For further adaptability the MSATA slots can be configured as mini PCIe positions, allowing for the addition of extra facilities and interfaces. Existing examples are Firewire, additional Ethernet and Dual CAN bus. The displays are equipped with 30 programmable function keys which conform to the requirements of the GVA human-factors standard as defined by DEF-STAN 23-09.

Range of sunlight readable displays
The EP family includes a Sunlight Readable Touchscreen, developed by DRS in house, to provide the best possible Effective Contrast Ratio when exposed to sunlight. The touchscreen stack was developed after extensive testing in controlled laboratory conditions using a simulated sunlight source, and within ‘real world’ environments. DRS utilised their in-house expertise in test and measurement alongside an iterative and comprehensive design methodology to arrive at the final solution as implemented.

Figure 4 - Typical Sunlight Readability Test Setup
This investment in research and testing has enabled DRS to develop a touchscreen technology that provides an excellent sunlight readability solution through optical technology, and not through increased power output within the display. Not only does this provide benefits in thermal management, cost and performance. It also allows the touchscreen to remain independent from the LCD display panel, and thus enabling DRS’s patentable display isolation solution providing protection for the display panel without the need for an external anti-vibrational mount solution.
Figure 5 - DRS Controlled Touchscreen 'Layer Stack'
Commercial In Confidence DRS Technologies UK Ltd As DRS are in full control of the ‘layer stack’ design it enables DRS to provide guarantees of continuity and ‘future proofing’ of the design and its implementation within the product. This has led to further implementation across different sizes of panel and across DRS’s family of displays.
NVG Modes

The EP range is available with NVG compliant displays capable of illumination levels of < 1nit. Using suitable application code the workstation can provide NVG green displays.
Covert Modes
3.8
The EP range has a number of different configurable covert modes with the following options:
All illumination off. Screen, bezel and status illumination off. Single flashing status. Covert key only on.
Other custom modes are available on application.
3.9
Reduced Power Requirements
To improve the unit SWAP capabilities, the EP family has been further optimised to reduce power consumption. This has resulted in a 10% power reduction from the unit it replaces, giving a minimum power reduction from 48W to 44W.
3.10 Optimised Thermal Management System The EP family has an extended operating temperature range offering an extremely wide window of operating temperatures. Operating Temperature Range:
-40°C to +71°C
DRS have continually developed an optimised Thermal Management system for the EP range of products using testing and computational analysis to experiment and then realise ‘real world’ results. The result of this is a highly efficient, fully optimised, thermal management system implemented across DRS’s range of products. The diagrams below show DRS’s commitment to understanding and optimisation of the thermal system within their units.

Commercial In Confidence DRS Technologies UK Ltd DRS have conducted detailed analysis and experimentation in order to thoroughly understand and optimise the thermal management system that is implemented into the EP family and is contributory to achieving the extreme environments of temperature that the EP family are capable of operating within. The EP family has been qualified to and meets the following standards –
Operating temperature - Operating -40°C to +71°C (with heater option); Operating -20°C to +71°C (without heater option); MIL-STD-810G Method 502.5 Procedure II; MIL-STD-810G TABLE 501.5 Procedure II; Storage -50°C to +71°C; MIL-STD-810G Method 501.5 Procedure I and 502.5 Procedure I Humidity - MIL-STD-810G Method 507.5 Procedure II, +60°C & 95%Rh Temperature Shock - MIL-STD-810G Method 503.5 Proc I-D
3.11 ‘Hot Territories Equipment’ option DRS have developed a ‘Hot Territories Equipment’ option that both protects the unit from heat input provided by solar loading and also protects the user from exposure to hot surfaces. Any thermal management system relies on heat present in the system being transferred into an external environment where ambient temperatures are cooler. Heat is transferred away from the equipment and is expelled through the fins into the airflow around the unit. Unfortunately in especially hot territories this process can be compromised by the presence of a substantial external heat input into the system in the form of solar loading. To protect the unit in very hot environments DRS have developed a ‘Hot Territories Equipment’ option. The addition of this option provides a barrier from the solar loading whilst maintaining non-restricted air flow around the unit and protecting the user. Due to the nature of heat transfer the external surfaces of the workstation may become hot to touch as heat is dissipated into the airflow around the unit. The ‘Hot Territories Equipment’ option provides the user with protection from hot surfaces by acting as a barrier between the user and the surfaces that are conducting heat and therefore can become hot to the touch.
Figure 10 - Simulation of the Solar Effect on the 'Hot Territories Equipment’ option
Page 12 of 27
Commercial In Confidence DRS Technologies UK Ltd Thermal analysis was undertaken to prove that the addition of the ‘Hot Territories Equipment’ option would absorb the heat input supplied by solar loading and protect the unit from being compromised. This was then backed up by laboratory tests. The image above shows the effect of the solar load on the protective cover, whilst the unit beneath remains protected from this external input.
Figure 11 - Testing the 'Hot Territories Equipment' option in Laboratory Conditions
The ‘Hot Territories Equipment’ option includes a sun shield and bumpers to prevent inadvertent touching of metal surfaces. Both the protective cover and the bumpers are surface finished with high thermal resistance material, which controls the rate of heat transfer to human skin.
