On this status, press & hold play button for 2 seconds. Then, the recorder will be changed to recording available mode. 5 2. Before use 2-1. Product Features Recording 6 • Records in audio format with Voice Guidance Messages. • Choose between ten recording modes. Uncompressed PCM stereo recording modes (PCM1~PCM5) for audio CD-like quality, two stereo modes including SHQ and HQ and three mono modes including SP, LP and SLP for extended recording times. • An adjustable recording sensitivity avoids background noises and adjusts to the recording environment. • Ample internal memory offers a large recording capacity and allows the recording and storage of long recordings. • The voice-activated recording mode provides hand-free recording without having to worry about remembering to push the record button. • The auto divide feature automatically divides long recordings into separate files. (Damage caused by submersion may not be covered by warranty regardless of the warranty period.) This may cause malfunction. • Never dismantle, repair, or rebuild your player without authorization. This may cause damage and malfunction. • Keep out of direct sunlight and extreme heat and cold (-5° -40°). This may cause malfunction. • Do not keep the product close to magnetic substance such as magnets, TVs, monitors, or speaker. This may cause damage and malfunction. • Do not disconnect the product from your PC while transferring data. This may cause malfunction. • Try to connect the product to USB port directly in your PC. In some custom-assembled PCs, improper USB port may cause malfunction. • Do not connect any device or object other than earphones to the Earphone jack. This may cause damage and malfunction. 3-2. Other • Do not use headphones / earphones while cycling, driving, or operating any motorized vehicle. This is dangerous and might be illegal in some areas. • Do not use the product while in motion, such as while driving, walking, or mountain climbing. This may cause injury. • Use the product in a safe place to avoid accidents. This may cause injury. • Always be careful to steer clear of nearby objects if you use the product while in motion. This may cause injury. • It is not recommended to use the product during electrical storms. This may cause injury. • Reduce volume or stop using the player if you experience ringing in your ears. This may cause injury. • Do not listen to music via headphones/earphones at high volume for a long time. This may cause injury. • Do not use headphones / earphones at high volume. Getting Started 5-1. Insert the batteries 1) Slide open the battery cover. 2) Place the batteries in the correct polarity as indicated and close the cover. ► Notes • Remove the batteries if you will not be using the device for an extended period. Leaking batteries may damage the device. • If the device malfunctions, remove the batteries and reinsert them. • Stop the recorder before replacing the batteries. Removing the batteries while the recorder is in use may corrupt the file. • If it takes longer than 2 minutes to replace the battery, you may have to reset the time. 5-2. Power on/off 1) To power on, press the ▷|| button until the display shows HELLO. 2) To power off, press the ▷||button while the recorder is stopped until the display shows BYE. 11 5-3. Hold function When the HOLD switch is in the Hold position, all buttons on the device are inactive. On Hold will be shown briefly on the display and the display will turn off. Unlock the device by moving the HOLD switch to the Off position. 5-4. Set date and time When the batteries are installed for the first time, you will be prompted to set the data and time. 1) ‘CLOCK’ will be shown on the display. Press the ▷||button. The year indicator flashes. 2) Press the|◄◄ or ►►| button to set the year. 3) Press the ▷|| button to advance to the settings for the month. 4) Repeat step2and 3 to continue to set the month, day, 12/24- hour system and the time in the same way. ► Notes The date and time can be changed at any time using the menu. Refer to Menu settings on page 28 for more information. 5-5. Display information 1) Press the STOP/DEL button while the recorder is stopped to rotate the information on the display: total playback time of the current file > time > date > remaining recording time > recording time of the current file > recording date of the current file. 2) Press ▷|| during recording to display the remaining recording time. 12 5-6. Use the device with a computer As a USB mass storage device, the device offers a convenient way to save, back up and move files. The device connects to a computer using a USB connection and does not require special software to be installed. The device is automatically displayed as a removable drive, allowing you to simply drag and drop files to and from the unit. ► Notes • Do not disconnect the device while files are transferred from or to the device. Data is still being transferred while the record/play indicator light is blinking in orange. • Do not format the drive of the device on a computer. 13 6. Recording 6-1. Record with the built-in microphone 1) Press the INDEX button while the recorder is stopped to select the desired folder. 2) Press the ◎ REC/|| button to start recording. The record/play indicator light will be red. Point the built-in microphone toward the sound source. 3) To pause recording, press the ◎ REC/|| button. The record/play indicator will blink, and PAUSE will flash on the display. Press the ◎ REC/|| button again to resume recording. 4) To stop recording, press the STOP/DEL button. ► Notes • Set the desired voice activation function and recording mode before starting recording (Refer to Menu settings on page 28 for details). • Make a test recording to make sure that the Menu settings are correct. • Press ▷|| during recording to display the remaining recording time. • Press ►►| during recording to create a new file. • The maximum number of files in each folder is 400, for a total capacity of 2,000 files (400 files × 4 folders, 400 files × 1 hidden folder). • If the recording time exceeds the available capacity or the number of files reaches 2,000, recording stops and ‘FULL’ will be displayed. Delete a few recordings or move them to a computer. • Do not remove the batteries during recording. This may cause the recorder to malfunction. • If recording for a prolonged period of time, replace the batteries before beginning. • The device can record while powered through a USB cable without draining the battery. Connect the recorder to a computer using the USB cable and press the ◎ REC/|| button for 1 second or longer to start recording. 14 6-2. Record with an external microphone To record with an external microphone, connect the microphone to the microphone jack and follow the same procedure as for the built-in microphone. 6-3. Using EDIT function APPEND: Add recording to an already recorded file OVER WRITE: Overwrite recording to an already recorded file 1) Select 21 on menu mode and “off” blinks. 2) Press|◄◄ or ►►| button to set ON and press ►||. 3) Press►|| button while APPEnd blinks ►|| and choose a recorded file to execute Append recording. 4) Press ►|| button to pause and PAUSE blinks. Press recording button and a recorded file plays and press recording button again while playback of a recorded file. Then, it appends recording from the last part of an already recorded file. 1) Select 21 on menu mode and “off” blinks. 2) Press|◄◄ or ►►| button to set ON and press ►||. 3) Press|◄◄ or ►►| button to move to OVER WRITE and OVER blinks. 4) Press ►|| button to set OVERWRITE and playback a recorded file to execute OVERWRITE recording. 5) Press ►||button to pause before a desired part to overwrite plays. Press recording button. If a recorded file plays the desired part to overwrite and press recording button again. Then, it overwrites recording to an already recorded file. 15 ► Notes • The recording mode of the original file is in effect when editing a recording. • Editing recording is not available in the M (music) folder and SLP Mode. • It is required to set EDIT off after using EDIT function is completed. 6-4. Add Index marks Index marks can be used to mark certain points in a recording as points of reference. Press the button during recording to add an index mark. The index number is displayed for one second. ► Notes • The INDEX icon indicates that the recording contains index marks. • Up to 32 index marks can be set per file. • During playback of recorded file, it is available to add index mark by pressing Menu button. 16 6-5. Covert Recording 1) Press the index button to make all A,B,C,D folders displayed on the LCD shown as below images. 2) If you press Recording button, ‘Hid’ message will appear on the LCD and there is no display on the LCD shown as below images. Even though there is no display on the LCD, recording is proceeding until you press Stop button. 3) If you press Stop button and complete Hidden Recording, the LCD turns out to normal display mode. To playback Hidden Recording files, it is also required to press the index button to make all A,B,C,D folders displayed shown as below images and press Playback button. ► Notes • The recording file will be saved on H folder of VOICE directory and it is set do read-only automatically which means it locks the current voice file to prevent it from being erased. • Locking a file keeps important data from being accidentally erased when you choose to erase all files from a folder. Please select Off to unlock the file and allows it to be erased. • When it is in Hidden Recording mode, the current settings will be ignored such as LED blinking, LCD screen, beep sound and so on due to covert recording. • Manufacturer & seller do not take any legal responsibility for this feature. ※ Connect to PC and check [H] folder When [H] folder is not found on PC, it is available to find [H] folder by setting the option of Windows explorer shown as below image. Windows explorer’s [Tools] – [Folder Option] – [View] – File & Folder – Hidden File & Folder – Select ‘Display Hidden File & Folder’ – Click Confirm. 17 6-6. Hearing Aid Function You can listen to voices by connecting earphones to the earphone jack first. 1) Press and hold INDEX button at stop mode and the device executes Hearing Aid function. 2) Press +,- button to adjust sensitivity during Hearing Aid operates. 3) To stop Hearing Aid function, press the STOP/DEL button. 1) Press ◎ REC/|| button and the device starts recording the sound from the earphone as it sounds like. 2) To stop recording on Hearing Aid mode and save a recording file, press STOP/DEL button. 18 ► Notes If earphones are disconnected from the earphone jack, Hearing Aid function terminates automatically. If an external microphone or audio cable is connected to the microphone jack, Hearing Aid function terminates automatically. 6-7. Recording Mobile Phone Conversation Universal Cell Microphone works with every telephone and cell phone to record your phone conversation. 1. How to connect the universal cell microphone 1) Plug a microphone to the microphone jack on the recorder 2) Place single earphone on your ear 3) Then, also place your cell phone or telephone above the earphone. When you talk to someone on cell phone or telephone, just press recording button on the recorder. < Instruction #2 & 3 > 19 6-8. Recording Telephone Conversation • The digital telephone cannot be connected to the Voice recorder. • To record only when you talk on the telephone, select Voice Activated Recording and press REC button. (For details, refer to menu settings page) • If Voice Activated Recording function does not work properly, set MIC sensitivity low. (For details, refer to menu settings page) • The input volume of recorded sound is affected by telephone and telephone line condition. If input volume is too low, disable Voice Activated Recording function. (For details, refer to menu settings page) 6-9. Recording Clearly using Triple Built-in Microphones The large signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio of the microphone picks up every detail of the human voice to give superb sound reproduction. Select Microphones according to recording purposes 1) In case of recording general meeting: Pull down a switch of the device to meeting direction. Left & Right Microphones are activated to record. 2) In case of recording interview: Push up a switch of the device to interview direction. All Left, Right & Center Microphones are activated to record. 20 7. Playback Playback 1) Press the INDEX button while the recorder is stopped to select the desired folder. 2) Press the|◄◄ or ►►| button to select the file to play back. 3) Press the ▷|| button. The playback time will be shown on the display, and the green LED blinks. 4) Adjust the volume using +/- buttons. 5) To stop playback, press the STOP/DEL button. The total playback time of the current file will be shown on the display. 6) Press the ▷|| button again to continue playback from the previous position. ► Notes When earphones are connected to the earphone jack, the device’s speaker will be switched off. ► Notes • The INDEX icon indicates that the voice file contains index marks. • Up to 32 index can be set per file. • During playback, it is available to reduce noise or enlarge voice by pressing REC button. Normal > LCF(reduce noise) > VOC(enlarge voice) 7-1. Playback functions 1) Slow and fast, normal playback Press and hold the ▷||button for 1 second or longer to switch between normal, slow and fast playback. 2) Search Press and hold the|◄◄ or ►►|button during playback to scan backward or forward in the current file at a fast speed. Release the button to resume playback at the selected speed. 21 3) Rewind and forward Press the |◄◄ or ►►|button during playback to rewind to the beginning of the file being played or forward to the next file, respectively. If the file contains index marks, playback begins at that point. 7-2. Play features You can set the device to play files repeatedly or randomly. 1) Repeat a sequence • To repeat or loop a sequence in a song, press the INDEX button at the chosen starting point. [A - B] flashes on the screen. • Press the INDEX button again at the chosen end point. The repeat sequence begins. • Press the STOP/DEL button to stop playback or press the INDEX button to return to normal playback. 2) Repeat a file or folder / shuffle mode Press and hold the INDEX button for 1 second or longer during playback to switch between play modes. (repeat file, repeat folder, shuffle folder or normal playback) 22 ► Notes Shuffle mode is available only in the M (music) folder. 8. Management of Recording File 8-1. Structure of Recording File Example: IC_130101(Year/Month/Date)_A(Folder Name)0001(File Number).file format ★ Tip regarding a good way to name recording file and manage recording files: 1) If you recorded an important conversation, it is better to copy this recording file to PC. 2) Name specific subject to recording file. For example, if conversation with person A was recorded, you can name it as “conversation with person A_IC_130101_A001” on your PC. 3) This way will be useful to retrieve & manage multiple recording files as time goes by. 24 8-5. Lock and Unlock Voice File Locking a file keeps important data from being accidentally erased. When you choose to erase all files from a folder, Please select Off to unlock the file and allows it to be erased. 1) Press and hold STOP/DEL button while the recorder is stopped to select the desired folder. 2) Press the|◄◄ or ►►|button to select the menu until protected is displayed “ProTec”. 3) Press the ▷|| button to enter lock file menu and OFF is displayed. 4) Press the|◄◄ or ►►|button to select the ON for locking voice file and OFF for unlocking. 5) Press the ▷|| button to confirm. ► Notes • File Protect is set to ON and Locks the file and prevents it from being erased. • Unlock File is set to OFF and Unlocks the file and allows it to be erased. • Each file should be set to OFF if you want to erase a folder or all folders. The protected file won’t be erased before setting OFF due to locking file. • Format the device, it erases all files on device even though files are locked. Before formatting, please save all recording files on each folders to your PC using USB. • Manufacturer shall not be legally liable for deletion of recording file or data loss due to user’s mistake or inadvertent use of the device. 25 8-6. Delete 1) Press the INDEX button while the recorder is stopped to select the desired folder. 2) Press and hold the STOP/DEL button for 1 second or longer. DELETE appears on the screen. Press the▷|| button. 3) Press the |◄◄ or ►►| button to select a delete option. 4) Press the ▷|| button. 5) Press the |◄◄ or ►►|button to select the file, the folder or the file containing the index marks to be deleted. 6) Press the ▷|| button again. N(No) is displayed. 7) Press the |◄◄ or ►►|button to select Y (Yes). 8) Press the ▷|| button to confirm. 26 ► Notes Sequential file numbers are reassigned automatically. 8-7. Recovery of deleted file To recover a file that was accidentally deleted. If files were recorded after deleting a recorded file, recovery is not available. 1) Press and hold the MENU button while the recorder is stopped to select the desired folder. 2) Press the |◄◄ or ►►| button to select the menu until Undelete is displayed “Undele”. 3) Press the ▷|| button to enter Undelete Menu and NO is displayed. 4) Press the |◄◄ or ►►| button to select the YES for undelete. 5) Press the ▷|| button to confirm. ► Notes ••It is only be available right after the file is erased on the device. Do not try to record anything please. • If you uploaded a file on the device to PC or recording function was activated just after file was removed, the device recorder will not be able to restore erased data. • When the device is out of space, please back it up for future use. • Error “ER” will be displayed if it could not recover the erased recording file. 27 9. Audio Player, FM Tuner ► Notes on using the device as a music player • The device supports music files in .wma and audio formats that can be transferred from the computer to the music folder of the device. Files with copy protection (digital rights management) are not supported. • The device supports up to four folder levels within the music folder. Each folder can hold up to 999 entries (files and folders). • Press the ▷||button to open a selected folder/file. Press the INDEX button to return to the folder one level higher. • Press the ◎ REC/|| button during music playback to change the equalizer mode (Normal > Classic > Jazz > Rock > Pop > Normal). ► Notes • The INDEX icon indicates that the voice file contains index marks. • Up to 32 index can be set per file. → For more information on audio player, refer to playback instruction please. Radio mode 1. Connect the earphones. The supplied earphones serve as a radio antenna. 2. Press and hold the MENU button for 1 second or longer to enter radio mode. 1. Press the MENU button while the recorder is in radio mode to open the menu. 2. Press the |◄◄ or ►►| button to select AUTO. 3. Press the ▷||button again. N (No) is displayed. 4. Press the |◄◄ or ►►| button to select Y(Yes). 5. Press the ▷||button to confirm. The radio automatically tunes radio stations and saves the frequencies as presets. The radio can store up to 20 radio stations as presets. 30 1. To fine-tune frequency, quickly press the |◄◄ or ►►|button. 2. To search for the next stronger signal, press and hold |◄◄ or ►►| button. 3. Press the ▷|| button to save the frequency as a preset. 4. Adjust the volume using the + and - buttons. 5. To exit radio mode, press and hold the MENU button for 1 second or longer. ► Notes • Press the STOP/DEL button while the recorder is in radio mode to switch between stereo and mono reception. 1. Press the INDEX button while the recorder is in radio mode to switch between frequency and preset mode. 2. In preset mode, press the |◄◄ or ►►| button to change to another preset radio station. 3. Adjust the volume using the +and - buttons. 4. To exit radio mode, press and hold the MENU button for 1 second or longer. 31 1. In preset mode, press the |◄◄ or ►►| button to select the preset radio station to be deleted. 3. Press and hold the STOP/DEL button for 1 second or longer to delete the preset radio station. 1. Manually tune to a radio station or play a preset radio station. 2. Press the ◎ REC/|| button to start recording. 3. To stop recording, press the STOP/DEL button. 32 11. Firmware Update The device is controlled by an internal program called firmware. Regularly check www.recordyourlifeinc.com for new firmware updates. 1. Download the firmware update from www.recordyourlifeinc.com and save the file in the root directory of the device. 2. Press the MENU button ① while the recorder is stopped to open the menu. 3. Press the |◄◄ or ►► button ② to select UPDATE (A). 4. Press the ▷|| button ③. N (No) is displayed. 5. Press the |◄◄ or ►► button ② to select Y (Yes). 6.
