The Spinpoint M6's design is truly revolutionary by fitting three disks within the industry's standard 9.5mm Z-height. This is critical because it enables notebook PC manufacturers to easily integrate the M6 into the tens of millions of notebook PCs that ship every quarter. The M6 drive offers the industry's largest capacity for premium notebook PCs, slim desktop computers, and external hard drives.
Superior Performance This SATA 3.0Gbps drive has 167GBs of formatted capacity per disk. The Spinpoint M6 utilizes Samsung perpendicular recording technology, enabling the drive to set new records in both areal density and platter capacity. The Spinpoint M6 hard drive features a 5400rpm spindle speed, 8MB cache, and freefall sensor available as optional feature. The 500GB M6 drive can store approximately 160,000 digital images, 125 hours of DVD movies, or 60 hours of high-definition video images. To improve recording stability during dramatic temperature changes, the Spinpoint M6 also features Samsung's Flying-onDemand head technology.

Special Features for Premium Notebook PCs Samsung's Spinpoint M6 offers special features suitable for a broad range of premium notebook PC applications. Capacities for this drive go up to half a terabyte, with a Serial ATA 3.0 Gbps interface and excellent performance at all levels. For premium notebook PCs, the Spinpoint M6 meets the Microsoft time-to-ready requirements. The Spinpoint M6 supports ramp load / unload up of 600,000 times. A Free Fall Sensor also enables the drive to operate more efficiently in a mobile environment.
How does Samsung make this possible? The key technology that makes all of this possible is Samsung-developed perpendicular recording technology. Perpendicular recording is a very different method to store bits on the disk drive platter. On a disk drive, each bit (1 or 0) is stored as magnetic information vertically on the platter; rather than the previous method of storing the magnetic information horizontally on the platter. The result is the magnetic poles of each bit do not fight with the magnetic poles of neighboring bits. Now bits can be packed more tightly next to each other, and the sectors can be packed more tightly side by side.
