Satcom antenna re-design Background FFI has Ku-band parabolic satcom antennas for Ku-band (12/14 GHz) that shall be redesigned to operate at X-band with circular polarisation. The main work items include designing a feed horn, connecting circular polarisers and integrating a complete X-band antenna. The receive frequency range is 7.25 – 7.75 GHz, and the transmit frequency band is 7.90 – 8.40 GHz. Task The main task is to design, build and measure the performance of a new antenna feed horn. The horn shall be designed for circular polarisation with both rotation directions. The horn shall be mounted on an antenna and the combined horn – reflector performance measured.
1. Describe and discuss relevant feed horn designs and implementation challenges 2. Build the horn using an engineering workshop 3. Measure the horn gain for both rotation directions and the cross polar discrimination between the two orthogonal polarizations by using a network analyser. 4. Identify and purchase a suitable orthomode transducer (OMT) with circular waveguide towards the horn and rectangular waveguides towards LNB and BUC. 5. Mount the horn and OMT on the antenna boom 6. Measure the far field antenna pattern with horn mounted on the antenna
The work shall be performed at UNIK and FFI, utilising the laboratory facilities at FFI. It may be possible to combine the Msc. thesis work with preceding summer job at FFI.
