Optical Fibre Optical Fibre Connectors The optical fibre connector is precision made and manufactured to demanding specifications. It is designed to support the fibre and ensure that when inserted within an adapter the fibre is accurately aligned with its mating connector. With singlemode fibre the alignment of the two fibres is critical to ensure low light loss between the mating connectors. Older designs of optical fibre connectors (ST, FC) generally use a nickel plated brass body but the new generation (E2000, SC, LC, MU, MTRJ) use plastics.
The body is used to support and lock the ferrule into the adapter. The ferrule in nearly all cases is manufactured from a ceramic material, the only exception to this is the MTRJ and MPO that use a polymer ferrule. Connectors are designed specifically for either single mode 9/125µm fibre or multimode 62.5/125µm or 50/ 125µm fibres. They are usually available in two versions, 900µm (pigtails) and 2 or 3mm cables (patchcords).
Optical Fibre Assemblies An optical fibre assembly is used where a connection is needed between two fixed cables, devices or between a device and fixed cable. A patchcord can be split into three crucial components, the connector, the cable and the manufacturing process. These three areas all contribute to the quality of a patchcord, but above all the manufacturing process is the one that defines the quality of the assembly.
The performance of an assembly is defined by the cable and connector used, but the manufacturing process is the main area that controls the quality and loss of the assembly. A poorly terminated fibre can have a disastrous effect on an optical fibre network such as high insertion loss and low return loss.
Optical Fibre Adapters An optical fibre adapter or uniter is used to mate two connectors together, usually mounted in a distribution panel or wall box. In most cases it is the critical part of the system that aligns the ferrule part of the connectors keeping the fibres in perfect alignment. Generally there are two types of alignment sleeve within an adapter, phosphor bronze or ceramic. The phosphor bronze are for general purpose use, the ceramic versions are normally only used in singlemode low loss environments.

In the case of the MTRJ the alignment is carried out by two small pins fitted to one of the connectors, the adapter is purely to support and lock the connectors together in the distribution panel or wall box.
Optical Fibre Assemblies

MPO MPO solution is as simple as 1 - 2 - 3 1. The system design The system needs to be designed with consideration to the numbers of fibres required and the type of connectors used on the active equipment. Where SC connectors are required the maximum number of connections using the modular patch panel is 36, but with LC and MTRJ connectors, the same panel can support 72 fibres. Where lower patch panel density is acceptable, the standard sliding tray patch panel can be used.
2. The site survey The installer is required to accurately measure the route in which the MPO assembly will be installed, allowing an extra 10% for cable slack, and 3 metres each end for termination and management of the cables within the communication cabinet.
3. The installation The MPO assembly is laid into position and loosely secured to the cable tray or supports with no bends smaller than 5cm radius. When pulling any optical fibre assembly into a building, the maximum pulling force MUST be adhered to, excess force will damage the cable and the fibres within. Carefully loop any spare cable under or within the communications cabinet allowing for a stress free run to the rear of the patch panel. Dust is the enemy of all optical fibre systems, so the dust caps MUST be left on the MPO assemblies until final connection. When the system is fully installed remove the dust caps and immediately connect to the MPO fan-out or module.

The MPO Plug and Play system is the perfect solution for today’s optical fibre installations. The system is designed to enable a fibre network to be installed and commissioned in the shortest possible time. An MPO installation does not require specialist engineers or tools as each component of the OPTRONICS MPO system is packed with a certificate showing its performance at the time of manufacture. Using the MPO connector on pre-terminated fibre solutions allows you to prepare the distribution units in the comfort of your own workshop. This can be taken a step further by having

Optical Fibre Assemblies Mode Conditioning Patchcord It is known that multimode optical fibre links that use laser based transmitters may be limited in bandwidth to values less than half those of the over-filled launch bandwidth. The bandwidth is very low in the case of centre-launch condition. Optronics Mode Conditioning Patchcords are specifically designed for launching your gigabit signal into conventional 62.5/125 (OM1) or 50/125 (OM2) fibre with very high bandwidth.
Typical Application Today’s Gigabit ethernet switches use Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers (VCSEL) as the old technology LED emitters cannot produce the signals required for high bandwidth applications.

The new mode conditioning assemblies are designed for use in 62.5/125 (OM1) or 50/125 (OM2) multimode fibre optic cabling systems, where these assemblies allow long wavelength 1300nm signals to be transmitted over good quality fibre at distances of up to 550m.
The 62.5/125 fibre will typically only allow a distance of 220-270m for Gigabit Ethernet using lower cost lasers operating at the 850nm. SX wavelength and longer distance requirements have to be met by the use of 1300nm electronics in conjunction with a Mode Conditioning launch lead. The Optronics Mode Conditioning cable assembly eliminates differential mode delay by moving the singlemode launch to an offset position away from the centre of the fibre where the impurities are found.

The use of pre-terminated fibre by an installer gives the piece of mind that they are supplying their customer a fibre link with perfect factory produced terminations that have lower losses than can be produced in the field.

The MTRJ connector is a development of the now legendary MT ferrule. This amazing technology is at the heart of many state of the art connectors. The MT ferrule in its various designs has the ability to connect anything from 2 fibres in the MTRJ to 72 fibres in the latest versions of the MPO connector.
Designed to terminate two fibres within a single connector, reduces the risk of operator error when interconnecting equipment and distribution panels. The MTRJ has been deliberately designed to look and feel like the industry standard copper connector. Optical Fibre Adapters
An optical fibre adapter or uniter is used to mate two connectors together, usually mounted in a distribution panel or wall box.
Phosphor bronze sleeves are for general use, while the ceramic versions are normally only used in singlemode low loss environments.
The Optronics optical fibre adapters are precision made to ensure perfect alignment of connectors, reducing insertion loss. In most cases, it is the critical part of the system that aligns the ferrule part of the connectors, keeping the fibres in perfect alignment.
In the case of the MTRJ and MPO the alignment is carried out by two small pins fitted to one of the connectors. The adapter is purely to support and lock the connectors together in the distribution panel or wall box.

Optical Fibre Cable As one of the largest manufactures of optical fibre cable assemblies, FibreFab has developed many cables for use in our own manufacturing facilities. We have now used these expertise to develop a range of optical fibre cables for use in general fibre installations. All cables are designed to be easy to terminate, strong and capable of withstanding the strains of installation. Two groups of cables have been developed, tight buffered internal/external cables and loose tube external cables. The loose tube cables are available in two designs, a singletube design capable of providing from 4 to 24 fibres and a multi-tube design that can provide 36 to 144 fibres. The tight buffered cables are also available in two designs, a single unit version capable of providing from 2 to 24 fibres and a multi unit version capable of providing from 24 to 144 fibres.

Optical Fibre Cable Steel Tape Armour Cable These dielectric Single Loose Tube cables are simply but robustly constructed of colour coded 250µm coated fibres contained in a central tube, surrounded by corrugated steel tape armour and twin steel strength members within the jacket. These are then enclosed in a black LSZH outer jacket, meeting IEC fire performance requirements. Dome Enclosures Sealant for Dome enclosures Our Sealant is a unique polyurethane sealant for the Telecommunication industry, to ensure joints and cables are effectively sealed against the ingress of water and water vapour. The sealant is dispensed from a hermetically sealed 170ml co-axial cartridge system, once mixed through the mixing nozzle and applied the sealant is an inert material. And cures inside the 15 minute short term
“MEL” permitting the closure to be flash tested to prove the integrity of the installation. The specially developed coaxial cartridge allows greater control over the application of the sealant and reduces sealant wastage as the cartridge can be re-sealed. This sealant is fully compliant to meet the stringent requirement of COSHH.

OPTRONICS TEST
The OPTMS test kit combines the OPTPM AUTO optical power meter and OPTLS QUAD integrated LED and LASER light source and is ideally suited for testing fibre optic networks with singlemode and multimode cables. The OPTLS QUAD features 850 nm and 1300 nm LED output from a multimode output port and 1310 nm and 1550 nm LASER output from a singlemode output port. The LED and LASER outputs are stabilized to ensure accurate test results per current TIA/ EIA requirements. This light source offers 4 modes of operation: Dual wavelengths sending ID, single wavelength sending ID, CW, and modulated Tone. [Active Output], [Tone], [Battery], and [External Power] indicators identify the currently enabled operating mode, battery charge status, and external power presence. Both output ports are equipped with removable SC adapter to allow the output connector to be inspected and cleaned. Fibre to the Home Fibre to the Home (FTTH) Advances in the telecommunications industry are now being driven by IPTV and triple play networks, fibre communications have become the fourth utility service alongside water, electricity and gas. Optical fibre is the clear route forward, offering significantly more bandwidth and therefore the amount of information which can be sent or received over the network can be vastly increased.
FTTx
In achieving a high spec Fibre To The x (FTTx) application, high quality optical components must be used to meet the stringent needs of varying FTTx networks. PON (Passive Optical Network) technology, and this offers the advantage that no active (expensive) components are necessary to send the required information to consumers. To distribute signals to the subscriber PON networks rely on splitter and WDM (Wavelength Division Multiplexing) technology.
Couplers and Splitters within the FTTx environment
Couplers and splitters are fibre optic network components that combine multiple optical channels (couplers) or divide a single channel into two or more channels (splitters). These components combine or separate optical power without converting or selecting wavelength. All FibreFab products are bidirectional and can be used interchangeably for coupling or splitting optical signals. Couplers and splitters are used in many applications. In CATV and FTTH PON networks, a single optical channel is split into 32 or more individual channels, each carrying the same information. Tap couplers are used to extract a small portion of the optical signal to monitor power levels or the signal itself. Couplers may merge optical channel on two or more wavelengths onto a single fibre. Couplers and splitters may be supplied as individual components or packaged into protective closures, modules, rack mounted assemblies or other configurations.
