School for Continuing and Professional Studies Certificate Program Course Outline Applied Video Editing Students will improve their skill set achieved in Fundamentals of video editing. Included in the class is working with advanced methods of visual effects, color correction, and advanced editing. Students will edit scenes using footage from multiple, simultaneous cameras. Additionally, instruction will be give on how to control the mood, employ visual effects to change a temporal location and to trim video and audio to make dialog seamless and draw the audience's attention. All certificate program classes are organized to address the following aspects: Problem-solving skills Technical aptitude Project-based learning Conceptual knowledge and understanding Portfolio development Real world application
Pre-Requisites: Successful completion of Tier I Software/Materials/Textbooks: Students will have access to the lab and do not have to purchase software. Software for this course includes Apple Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premiere Pro video editing software.
Student should bring:
Flash drive or removable media for project files Earphones Blank DVD media

Improve skill set achieved in Fundamentals of video editing Use NLE software advance methods for visual effects, color correction, and advanced editing Create animated graphics using multiple layers, mattes, and Photoshop PSD files Use video filter plug-in to create compositions using color keying Utilize 3phase color correction to create uniformity of color and saturation in the sequence Edit scenes using footage from multiple, simultaneous cameras Sweeten audio soundtrack to improve audio and create more dynamic sound

Eight Week Class Outline Example:
Week One: Introduce advanced NLE software functions. Select footage to integrate with video filters. Week Two: Present multilayer animation techniques. Create show open using Photoshop PSD files and mattes. Week Three: Demonstrate vector scope, waveform monitor, and other methods for create broadcast safe video. Edit footage using these tools. Week Four: Introduce multi-camera editing techniques. Create scene using footage from two cameras. Week Five: Continue multi-camera editing. Edit a scene using footage from multiple cameras. Week Six: Use insert edits, sync, and temporal filters to edit another scene. Week Seven: Render video to various HD-codecs. Explore compression for distribution. Week Eight: Render scenes, create menus, and chapter markers for export to DVD.
Example Assignments:
Choose a TV show and watch for use of multiple cameras and sound editing. Carefully watch a TV commercial for the use of visual effects to alter time, color, or location. Edit video footage into a scene, then use color correction to alter the audience's perception of the sequence.
Assessment: Students must receive a “C” or better in the class. Grading is based on the following: Attendance Follows directions/instructions Completion of assignments Portfolio/coursework review Participation in critiques and class discussion Meets deadlines Studio work Creative thinking/problem solving skills

The student has: The student has demonstrated the ability to select video filters to alter the appearance of their video. The student has utilized multilayer techniques to create a title sequence. The student has employed a vector scope, waveform monitor, and other signal processing tools to ensure a broadcast safe video clip. The student has edited footage from two or more cameras to create a scene with dialog. The student has mastered a DVD project for creation.
