Science 9 Assignment – Power, Energy and Cost Power 1. A vacuum cleaner has a power rating of 500W when used in your house. What is the current drawn when it is used? 2. How much current is drawn by a 1100W toaster? 3. A water pump is used to pump water in your house. If it has a power rating of 1200W when connected to a 240V supply determine the current draw. 4. An LCD projector used in a classroom is rated at 300W. What is the current draw? 5. How much current would a 90 W ceiling fan draw?
For the following questions determine the power and the possible tool or device used based on the table below. Show your work. 6. A tool is used for construction and draws 6.25A. 7. A tool used for construction draws 11.67A. 8. A tool used in the yard draws 3.75A. 9. The electric version of this yard tool draws about 9.2A.
Energy
(Show your work and give your answer in kWh – remember to divide by 1000)
10. Determine the energy used by a cable box used for 12 hours. 11. How much energy is used by a light that has 3 – 50W incandescent light bulbs that are used for 6 hours? 12. A clothes dryer is used for 3 hours. Determine the energy used. 13. A LCD TV is used for 6 hours. How much energy is used? 14. How much energy is used by a dishwasher that is used for 90 minutes?
Cost 15. Determine the cost to use the items in questions 4,5,6, 12 and 13. 16. How much money would you spend on energy to run 4 – 40W lightbulbs for 3 hours a day for one year. 17. How much would you spend on energy if you switched your 40W bulbs to CFL bulbs rated at 13 W?
Bonus – use the knowledge you have now to attempt the questions below if you want to try them. You are not required to do 18-21 18. An AAA-cell alkaline battery has a voltage of 1.5V and is rated at 1150mAh. Determine the energy stored in the battery. 19. A D-cell alkaline battery has a voltage of 1.5V and is rated at 17000 mAh. Determine the energy stored in the battery in kWh. (Remember to change mAh to Ah by dividing by 1000) 20. A C-cell alkaline battery has a voltage of 1.5V and is rated at 7800mAh. Determine the energy stored in the battery. 21. An AA-cell alkaline battery has a voltage of 1.5V and is rated at 2100mAh. Determine the energy stored in the battery.
