Today’s security systems have the ability to be controlled and send events to smartphones letting you know when the kids get home from school. With an assortment of sensors, you can be alerted to events such as water leaks or flooding, a room or area getting too warm or too cold, or unsafe levels of natural gas or carbon monoxide. Optional smoke detectors can contact the monitoring station where an agent will dispatch fire services. Asset sensors can be placed on valuable items, liquor cabinets, or gun safes to alert you when they have been moved or opened. Wireless keyfobs can allow you to arm and disarm the security system, as well as act as a panic button in case of an emergency. Panic buttons can be programmed as a safety panic device for an elderly or disabled person or as an emergency panic device in case your safety is endangered. As an added benefit, having a monitored security system can decrease your homeowners’ insurance premium. What Are the Advantages of a Hard-Wired Security System New homes allow us to pull security wires for most of the security system devices, which results in a more reliable security system with less maintenance. Wireless security devices require batteries that can last 3-5 years, but at some point, they need to be replaced. Wireless security devices are susceptible to interference from other electronics and their operating distance can be reduced by building materials such as tile and concrete. Our security systems are hybrid systems, so they allow for wired and wireless devices. Wireless devices such as keyfobs and panic buttons add user-convenience while wireless detectors and sensors can add increased functionality later. Security Packages Security System Prewire Description: This package is a wiring only option and provides wiring for one user keypad at the garage entry door, one motion detector, one siren near the Master Bedroom, and up to 4 entry doors. Recommended Upgrades: N/A Notes: This package contains wiring and door contacts, only. The keypad, motion, and siren locations will be blank plated. Security System Package Description: The Base Package provides one user keypad at the garage entry door, one motion detector, and one siren near the Master Bedroom, and covers up to 4 entry doors. Recommended Upgrades: See Security Options below. Notes: This package does not detect windows being opened or broken. Please add window contacts or glass break options for this increased coverage. Overhead garage doors are not protected by the security system, if it is important to protect overhead garage doors, please contact a Buhl Electric Sales Representative. Uses 4-5 of 8 hard-wired zones. Security System Package with Monitoring Agreement Description: The Base Package provides one user keypad at the garage entry door, one motion detector, and one siren near the Master Bedroom, and covers up to 4 entry doors. This option requires agreeing to a 3-year Monitoring Contract. Security Options Note: All of the following security options require one of the above security packages. Some options will not function properly unless there is an active security monitoring service account. Door/Window Contact Description: A security contact detects when a door or window is opened. This option is for windows and doors, but not overhead or roll-up garage doors. Recommended Upgrades: Glassbreak sensor. Notes: Double-hung windows will require two contacts to detect if either sash is opened. In some cases, it may not be possible to install a contact on the top sash in an inconspicuous manner. Does not protect against breaking the glass window. Glassbreak Sensor Description: A glassbreak sensor detects the sound of breaking glass. Recommended Upgrades: N/A. Notes: Certain windows, such as casement or crank-out windows, cannot be opened from the outside without breaking the window, a glassbreak sensor would detect the sound of the broken glass. Smoke Detector Description: This smoke detector supplements the smoke detectors that are required by the building code. This smoke detector is connected to the alarm system and will communicate a fire alarm to the monitoring company. The monitoring station will notify the local fire emergency crews for dispatch, this may potentially save your house and valuables when the house is unoccupied. Recommended Upgrades: Notes: To prevent false alarms, it is not recommended to place a smoke detector in the kitchen. The smoke detector is monitored whether the system is armed or disarmed. This requires an active monitoring agreement for complete functionality. For the best coverage, add one smoke detector centralized per level, and consider adding detectors in each bedroom. Dust can reduce a smoke detectors ability to detect small levels of smoke, it is recommended to test annually and replace as needed or every five years. All smoke detectors are wired on one zone with no other devices. Water Sensor Description: A water sensor is placed in areas where a water leak can cause significant damage. Recommended locations include each sump pump and washer machines or dishwashers. When water is present, the keypads will beep and a non-emergency status will be sent to the monitoring station, an agent will attempt to contact the people on the monitoring agreement contact list. Recommended Upgrades: Notes: The most common usage is at sump pumps where a timely warning can prevent water damage to a finished basement caused by a faulty pump or power outage. This requires an active monitoring agreement for complete functionality. Water sensors are wired on their own zone, multiple sensors can be on the same zone. Combustible Gas Detector Description: This sensor detects propane and natural gases. This can detect leaks or excessive gas buildup due to ignition device failure. Recommended Upgrades: CO Detectors, Smoke Detectors. Notes: Recommended placement: Gas water heaters, gas fireplaces, gas furnaces, and gas manifolds. Combustible Gas Detectors should be wired on a separate zone, multiple gas detectors can be placed on the same zone. Combustible Gas Detectors can be wired on the same zone with CO Detectors. Carbon Monoxide (CO) Detector Description: This sensor detects Carbon Monoxide (CO) which is an odor-free, toxic by-product of fire combustion. Improper combustion results in excessive CO which can be fatal. Place CO Detectors near combustion devices such as fire places, gas furnaces, and hot water heaters to detect dangerous levels of Carbon Monoxide. Recommended Upgrades: Natural Gas Detector, Smoke Detectors. Notes: A CO detector’s performance degrades over time and can be impeded by dust, it is recommended to test annually and replace as needed or every five years. CO Detectors should be wired on a separate zone, multiple CO detectors can be placed on the same zone. Combustible Gas Detectors can be wired on the same zone with CO Detectors. PIR Motion Detector Description: This motion detector is the most common, and uses passive-infrared technology to detect heat differences to identify intruders. This detector offers basic pet immunity up to 25 pounds. Recommended Upgrades: Notes: The detector offers approximately 90 degree horizontal coverage. Animals at higher locations, such as stairs or on top of furniture, will appear larger to the detector and may cause false alarms. Motion Detectors should be on a separate zone or on a zone with other motion detectors. Dual-Technology Motion Detector Description: This is an upgraded motion detector that utilizes infrared and microwave motion detection technologies to reduce false alarms. The enhanced technology offers pet immunity up to 100 pounds. Recommended Upgrades: Glass break sensors. Notes: The detector offers approximately 90 degree horizontal coverage. Animals at higher locations, such as stairs or on top of furniture, will appear larger to the detector and may cause false alarms. Motion Detectors should be on a separate zone or on a zone with other motion detectors. Additional Keypad, Standard Description: This is the standard keypad that gives you the ability to arm, disarm, and check the status of the security system at another location. Recommended Upgrades: Alphanumeric Keypad. Notes: The security system is limited to three keypads, additional keypads beyond three will require an additional power supply. Please contact a Buhl Electric sales representative for pricing and system design on larger systems. Keypads do not use zones. Additional Keypad, Alphanumeric Description: This is an advanced keypad that gives you the ability to arm, disarm, and check the status of the security system at another location. The status is reported with zone names rather than zone numbers, giving a descriptive name rather than requiring the user to lookup a zone list. Recommended Upgrades: Notes: The security system is limited to three keypads, additional keypads beyond three will require an additional power supply. Please contact a Buhl Electric sales representative for pricing and system design on larger systems. Keypads do not use zones. 4-Button Keyfob Description: This is a 4-button wireless remote similar to a car alarm remote that will allow the user to disarm and arm the system. One button can be programmed as a panic button. Recommended Upgrades: Notes: The keyfob has an estimated range of 100 feet. The security panel is limited to 16 wireless zones. Wireless zones can only be associated with one wireless device or device function. A keyfob uses a wireless zone for each button that is programmed. Standard programming would use 2-4 wireless zones. 4-Button Keyfob Wireless Panic Button Description: This is a wireless device that can be carried in a pocket or purse or worn as a pendant around the house. Can be programmed as a distress signal or medical emergency signal. Recommended Upgrades: 4-Button Keyfobs can arm and disarm the security system and act as a panic button. Notes: This device has an estimated range of 100 feet. The security panel is limited to 16 wireless zones. Wireless zones can only be associated with one wireless device or device function. A wireless panic button uses one wireless zone. Wireless Panic Button Zone Expansion Card Description: This device adds 8 additional wired zones to the security system. Zones are grouped devices and sensors. The fewer items in a group, the easier it is to identify which device triggered the alarm or requires service. Recommended Upgrades: Notes: The security brain has 8 built-in hard-wired zones. GSM Communicator Description: This device allows the security system to communicate with the Monitoring Station without a traditional phone line. If you do not wish to have a traditional landline phone, this option uses cellular technology to communicate with the Monitoring Station.
