IRISH ROAD SAFETY WEEK PR0GRAMME OF EVENTS 5th to 11th October, 2015 Road Safety Together Committee Galway County Council’s Road Safety Together Committee consists of representatives from Galway County Council, Galway City Council, Road Safety Authority, National Roads Authority and An Garda Síochána. The Committee meets regularly and jointly examines options available to improve road safety for pedestrians, motorists and road users, in general. The following will be taking place during Road Safety Week: o Display Stand in County Hall’s Foyer –  Road Safety Awareness Literature/ Leaflets/ Posters available on the following:                   o ‘Be Safe, Be Seen’ - pedestrians, cyclists & motorcyclists mobile phone use whilst driving speeding seat belts drink driving driver tiredness driving under the influence of drugs correct tyre pressure cycle safety motorcycles/ mopeds child safety in cars motorway driving going to school – advice for parents/ guardians learner drivers roundabouts: using the correct lane road safety & the law in Ireland medicines & driving correct use of lights Be Safe, Be Seen! - Campaign aimed at NUIG Students Galway Co. Council, in conjunction with NUI Galway Students Union and the Road Safety Authority, are running a road safety awareness campaign encouraging pedestrians and cyclists to arrive safely at college. 500 high visibility vests and 500 bike lights will be distributed to students attending the college. o FREE 5 Point Vehicle ‘Health Check’ As the evenings are getting shorter and the weather gets more changeable, it is of the utmost importance that your car is in proper working order. For the winter months, road-users have the opportunity to avail of a FREE 5 point safety check and ensure that their vehicle’s : Tyres, Brakes, Shocks, Lights/Levels and Wipers are in proper working order. It will give you peace of mind knowing your car is fit for driving this winter. The check takes approx. 15 minutes. If any staff member would like to avail of a High Visibility Vest, courtesy of the Road Safety Authority, please email me your preferred size (S/M/L/XL). Children’s vests are also available – sizes: 2-4 years/ 4-6 years and 7-9 years. o ‘Drive for Life’ – Road Safety Awareness Course for Teenagers The ‘Drive for Life’ Course is a one-day course offered to transition/ fourth year students and it aims to raise awareness of road safety and mould attitudes of young drivers-to-be before they actually start to drive. The Programme is aimed at preventing young people becoming involved in road traffic incidents that all too often result in serious injury or death. Galway County Council has offered subvention to all secondary schools in the county who participate in this course, during the current school year. o Campaign aimed at GMIT Galway County Council has teamed up with GMIT Students Union and the Road Safety Authority and a road safety awareness campaign is taking place which ensures pedestrians visibility on our roads whereby 500 high visibility vests will be distributed to students attending the college. o Cycling Training for National Schools A Cycling Training Programme is available to all national schools in Co. Galway outlining tips on safer cycling and the use of a helmet - the Council provides funding to schools towards the cost of the course, in conjunction with the RSA. o Road Safety Awareness Poster Competition Thanks to all who entered the Road Safety Awareness Poster Competition. Posters are on display in County Hall’s Atrium during Road Safety Week.
