Use the web interface to commission your SEL-2730M.
➤
Reestablish management access to your SEL-2730M if the IP address or administrative accounts are lost.
To Obtain an SEL-2730M Managed Ethernet Switch Instruction Manual To obtain a copy of the SEL-2730M Managed Ethernet Switch Instruction Manual, contact the factory using the information provided at the end of this document under Factory Assistance on page 4. The SEL-2730M Instruction Manual contains additional details on settings, operation, and specifications.
Setting Up Your SEL-2730M Commissioning The factory configuration of the unit enables all ports, so that when the unit starts up, even before commissioning, it will function with no further setup as an unmanaged Ethernet switch. To take advantage of the managed switch features, such as VLANs, traffic prioritization, filtering, and security features of the SEL-2730M, you will need to commission the unit and perform further configuration as described in the SEL-2730M Instruction Manual. To commission the unit, you will need to use a computer with a web browser to access the SEL-2730M web management interface. On the Commissioning page, you supply the username and password to be used for the first administrative user of the device. When you click Submit, the first administrative user account will be created, and you will be redirected to the User Login page. You can log in with the new account credentials to complete setup of your SEL-2730M.

Making the Connection A new unit will have the front Ethernet port, ETH F, enabled and the Captive Port feature turned on. This will make setup of your computer’s network parameters simple, and in many cases, will require no setup at all. Step 1.
Set your network adaptor to configure its IP address and DNS server settings to use DHCP. a. Open the Network Connections control panel. b.
Select the network connection that you will use to connect to the SEL-2730M.

Right-click the connection, and choose Properties. Select Internet Protocol TCP/IP from the list, and then click the Properties button. On the General tab of the properties window, select both Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically.

Press OK and then press OK again to apply these settings.

Close the Network Connections control panel.
Step 2.
Connect your Ethernet adapter to the ETH F connection on the front panel of the SEL-2730M, and wait for the connection to be configured, which is normally a little less than ten seconds.
Step 3.
Open your browser and go to www.selinc.com. The SEL-2730M will direct the browser to its own management interface. On a new unit, this will be the commissioning page.
Reestablish Management Access If You Forget the IP Address of Your SEL-2730M If you forget the IP address for which your SEL-2730M is configured, but do not want to perform a full factory reset, the Captive Port feature provides you access to the web management interface. To activate the Captive Port feature on ETH F, insert a tool such as a straightened paper clip into the pinhole reset hole above Port 2 on the rear panel and press the recessed button for five seconds. This enables the front Ethernet port and turns on the Captive Port feature.

The Captive Port feature provides special DHCP and DNS servers to the computer connected to ETH F. The DHCP server assigns the computer an IP address adjacent to the IP address of your SEL-2730M, so the computer will be on the same subnet and capable of communicating with it. This also sets the DNS server for the computer to the IP address of your SEL-2730M. Once this occurs, any DNS requests from the computer will resolve to the SEL-2730M, so that browsing to any host, such as www.selinc.com, results in opening the web management interface of your SEL-2730M.
If You Forget Your Administrative Account Password Use of the Captive Port feature to gain access to your SEL-2730M reestablishes network communication with it, but you must still know the credentials for an administrative account. If you have lost all administrative account credentials, you must perform a full factory-default reset. Turn off power to your SEL-2730M, insert a tool such as a straightened paper clip into the pinhole reset hole above Port 2 on the rear panel, and press the recessed button. While holding the button, apply power. After ten seconds, release the reset button. Wait for the green ENABLED LED on the front panel to illuminate, indicating that your SEL-2730M has been reset to factory-default settings and is ready. ETH F will be enabled, the Captive Port feature will be on, and the IP address for the unit will be 192.168.1.2. You can access the Commissioning page by entering a hostname, such as www.selinc.com, or you can browse directly to the IP address for the unit at https://192.168.1.2.
