Atlantic Industries’ (NAI) Sensor Interface Unit (SIU6) is a rugged base-plate conduction cooled chassis which takes advantage of NAI’s rugged conduction cooled 6U VME Multifunction I/O boards and power supply products. The SIU6 provides a high density, compact data distribution system solution for I/O intensive applications. The SIU6 supports full I/O control and communication over Ethernet. MIL-STD-1553, ARINC 429, Serial or CANBus interfaces are also available as primary interfaces. Analog Devices Blackfin® BF533 and TM Freescale MPC8536 processors can be added for a complete processing and I/O solution. Objectives This manual provides the user with basic hardware implementation and information regarding the operation and interface of the SIU6. Each SIU6 is fitted with either one or two 6U VME boards and a single AC or DC Power Supply. Additional options for hold-up, CE101, reverse polarity protections etc. are available. Scope This manual only covers the operation of the SIU6 as a stand-alone I/O subsystem. This manual does not cover specific details relating to the operation of the I/O boards and function module fitted within the SIU6. Warnings The SIU6 is delivered as a standalone system. Besides removing the rear cover to access a board’s front panel I/O, if required, NAI recommends that the boards and power supply not be removed from the chassis. WARNINGS This symbol is intended to alert the presence of un-insulated dangerous voltage and shock hazard if misuse or improper handling. This symbol is intended to alert the presence of important information in the literature accompanying this device. All information should be read carefully to avoid misuse and potential harm to the user and/or device. GENERAL SAFETY NOTICES The following general safety notices supplement the specific warnings and cautions appearing elsewhere in the manual. They are recommended precautions that must be understood and applied during operation and maintenance of the instrument covered herein. REPAIR DO NOT ATTEMPT REPAIR. Under no circumstances should repair of this instrument be attempted. All repairs to this chassis must be accomplished at the Factory. SIU6 Hardware Manual Revision A8 www.naii.com Page 5 of 31 HIGH VOLTAGE HIGH VOLTAGE may be used in the operation of this equipment. Damage may result if personnel fail to observe safety precautions. Dependent on configuration, some modules e.g. Synchro / Resolver or AC signal sources can generate output signals with high voltages. Be careful not to contact high-voltage connections when installing, operating or maintaining this instrument. INPUT POWER ALWAYS ON The design of the model SIU6 is such that AC or DC input power is continuously supplied to internal circuits. In order to disconnect the SIU6 from external power, the external power should first be de-energized. The power input connector J5 can then be removed. Conventions All numbers are expressed in decimal format unless otherwise noted. Our unique modular architecture allows for a wide selection of different I/O and communications functions such as A/D, D/A, TTL, RTD, Discrete I/O, Synchro/Resolver-to-Digital and LVDT, Digital-to-Synchro/Resolver and DLV, BC/RT/MT MIL-STD-1553, high speed Sync/Async RS232/422/485, ARINC 429 and CANBus. This approach increases package density, saves enclosure slots and reduces power consumption. A fully integrated backplane and front panel architecture eliminates the need for custom internal cabling or wiring. Continuous background BIT support monitors each channel. A fault is immediately reported and the specific channel is identified. A processor option allows pre-processing of raw I/O data. This capability can provide significant benefits including: Formatting and packetizing I/O data for immediate use by the system or mission processor Specific routines can be implemented for individual data channels. A typical example would be an average of data over a specified number of samples. Allow routines to be implemented for multiple data channel monitoring and event handling. For example, allow a discrete channel activation to output a specific D/A channel. When receiving the shipment container, inspect packaging for any evidence of physical damage. If damage is evident, it is recommended that the carrier agent is present when opening the shipping container. It is further recommended that all packing material is retained in case the SIU6 needs to be shipped elsewhere. Chassis Identification All SIU6 chassis are affixed with a label, indicating part number, serial number and Slot configuration. Note: the IP and MAC address of the cards that are configured with Ethernet is also provided. (sample identification labeling) (approximate labeling location) Inspection It is recommended to ensure the chassis and all connectors J1 to J5 were not damaged during transit. SIU6 Hardware Manual Revision A8 www.naii.com Page 8 of 31 FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION Mechanical Description The SIU6 is a rugged, aluminum billet based, conduction cooled chassis which requires proper mounting to a cold-plate that is maintained at 71°C or less. Three mounting holes are provided along each side of the SIU6. Please see the outline and interface drawings below. Dimensions shown are in inches Figure 2a: SIU6 Outline Dimensions Mounting requirements Dimensions shown are in inches Figure 2b: SIU6 Cold Plate Mounting View/Pattern SIU6 Hardware Manual Revision A8 www.naii.com Page 9 of 31 Finish Unless otherwise specified, the following standard finish applies: Weight Configurations of VME and PSU Circuit Card Assemblies vary therefore the approximate weight of the SIU6 is based on the chassis, backplane, EMI Filter and all connectors fitted. The approximate weight is 8.5 lbs. excluding VME cards and PSU. Logic level high (+5V) (referenced to internal system GND of the SIU), disables power output of the internal PSU effectively removing power from (shutting off) SLOT-A and SLOT-C I/O cards. VME-SYSRST# Logic level GND (referenced to internal system GND of the SIU) applies active low assertion to the VME SYSRST# signal on the cards, which effectively introduces a ‘system/card’ reset. The connector is only used during the development phase for serial and USB communications access to both the U2 and U3 processor modules when fitted. During normal operation of the SIU6 the connector must be sealed (covered) with the supplied connector access cap. All pins and operation have been verified. It is recommended that Power and Ethernet connections be made to verify operation of the boards fitted within the SIU by making use of NAI’s JAVA-based web server which can be utilized as a board level debugging tool (if the SIU card configuration supports) . The example process below describes the use of NAI’s Ethernet debug tool. After applying appropriate power to the SIU, connect a host computer (laptop or similar running WinXP, JAVA enabled) to Ethernet Port A or Port B. The selection of Ethernet Port A or B is dependent on Slot A VME board configuration. With your browser (Internet Explorer), type in the Board’s IP Address (e.g. 10.8.19.55) and below screen will appear. The JAVA based web server is an interactive GUI application allowing full access, query and operation of the function modules configured on the cards. (For detailed supplement, please visit the NAI web-site specific product page and refer to: NAI Ethernet Interface for Embedded IO Boards Specification These screen shots shows the Board is a 64C3 populated with (6) Modules: Clicking on the “Info” Button will bring you to the next screen with detail Module information: (Clicking the module ‘buttons’ will bring you into an interactive GUI test screen for the particular module functions) SIU6 Hardware Manual Revision A8 www.naii.com Page 25 of 31 Note: Ethernet port assignments, MAC address, and factory default IP address are indicated on the chassis label. The Ethernet port assignments can also be determined by the part number designation, letter code”W”. Please refer to the Configuration / Ordering information section of this document.
