SEPATON S2100-ES2 VTL The SEPATON S2100-ES2 VTL is a complete appliance that can be added to any backup environment quickly and without disruption. It appears to backup applications like Veritas NetBackup from Symantec as a standard physical tape library. Its extensible design lets you add advanced features simply by loading SEPATON’s fully integrated software applications such as DeltaStor™ for data deduplication and Site2™ for data replication. The S2100-ES2 appliance takes advantage of the many powerful features and robust functions within the Veritas NetBackup software to deliver a unique backup/restore solution. For example, Veritas NetBackup's multiplexing feature and the NetBackup Advanced Client option work optimally with the high-performance, disk-based SEPATON S2100. Media management and administration features such as Inline Copy and Veritas NetBackup Vault option work together with the S2100-ES2 to enable users to leverage their existing physical tape systems for fast, efficient off-site storage.

Veritas NetBackup Software As the recognized leader in enterprise-class backup and recovery, Veritas NetBackup software is designed to help provide high performance data protection for the most complex UNIX®, Windows®, Linux and NetWare® environments. It features an intuitive graphical user interface that enables you to manage all aspects of backup and recovery and to maintain consistent backup policies that are deployed across the enterprise. Veritas NetBackup 6.5 adds new user features and functionality including advanced recovery agents for critical applications (granular recovery for VMware, SharePoint Portal Server and Exchange), continuous protection. These features make optimal use of disk for backup and recovery and integrated disaster recovery capabilities.

Combining Best-in-Class Technologies This paper will discuss the benefits of combining a SEPATON S2100-ES2 VTL with Veritas NetBackup software into a unique data protection solution. These benefits include: • Reduced backup and restore times with performance that is many times faster than any other disk-based or physical tape-based solution. • Scalability to handle exponential data growth with up to twenty five times more capacity than any other VTL in the industry and up to 34.5 TB/hour performance. • The ability to store more data online for less cost by adding SEPATON’s DeltaStor data deduplication application. Scale capacity of a single S2100-ES2 appliance from 7.5 TB to more than 1.2 PB (up to 60 PB with compression and deduplication. • High availability protection with comprehensive HA features built into the VTL hardware. • Flexible Configuration. Configure the S2100-ES2 with any logical combinations of up to 3072 virtual tape libraries and virtual tape drives. Leveraging the Power of NetBackup The SEPATON S2100-ES2 VTL enables users to take advantage of Veritas NetBackup software features such as Inline Copy, Advanced Client option and Multiplexing to increase the speed of backups and restores to an industry-leading rate of 34.5TB/hour. As a result, you can rapidly restore full and incremental backups, and granular recoveries for VMware, SharePoint Portal Server and Exchange and increase the frequency of your incremental backups for added protection. This solution gives you instantaneous access to all data with little or no change in operations. Three innovative technologies make this level of performance possible:

• Scalable Replication Engine (SRE™). SEPATON S2100-ES2 VTLs deliver optimal performance with up to 16 SEPATON SRE processing nodes, each of which supports up to two 4-Gbit Fibre Channel ports, for up to 600 MB/second aggregate bandwidth per SRE (9600 MB/sec total). • Dynamic Disk File System (Dynamic DFS). The proprietary Dynamic DFS is designed for large-block, sequential I/O for performance characteristics that cannot be met by generic SATA disk enclosures. In addition, unlike other backup solutions, SEPATON stores data in large extents to deliver highly efficient disk capacity usage and maximum performance. • The performance-optimized SIS operates at the kernel level and stripes data across all available disks to alleviate resource contention and increases performance by spreading I/O across multiple spindles.
Snapshots for Optimized Performance NetBackup Advanced Client option in Veritas NetBackup software provides the ability to incorporate snapshot technology into the backup procedure. FlashBackup is a policy type that combines the speed of raw-partition backups with the ability to restore individual files. This feature allows you to optimize performance on the S2100-ES2 for servers with file systems that contain a very large number of files. This option dramatically increases backup performance over standard file-ordered backup methods. It also can significantly increase data streams, to further increase the performance of raw-partition backups when there are multiple devices in the Backup Selections list.
Faster Restores When Using Multiplexing One of the major advantages of the SEPATON S2100-ES2 is its ability to create multiple virtual tape drives to reduce the need for the Veritas multiplexing capability. While multiplexing increases backup speed, it also slows restore times by combining data from multiple servers on the same tape. The S2100-ES2 can handle multiple virtual devices in a logical combination of either tape libraries or tape drives. If customers choose to implement multiplexing, SEPATON can minimize its impact on restore speeds by providing random access to stored data. To create a new backup stream through Veritas NetBackup software, users simply create the appropriate number of virtual tape devices in the SEPATON S2100-ES2 appliance to accommodate the new backup stream. The Veritas NetBackup software will initiate parallel backup sessions based on client system mount points or individual entries (e.g. explicit or via wildcards) in the Veritas NetBackup software policy file list.

Handle Exponential Data Growth with Performance and Scalability Veritas NetBackup software offers unlimited scalability for centralized management and control, high-performance technology and a flexible multi-tier architecture. This feature enables you to add clients and media servers to manage ever-expanding backup environments simply and easily. The S2100-ES2 appliance also offers advanced scalability to enable you to scale performance and capacity linearly without the need for over-buying, preplanning, or adding complexity. Performance scales up to 16 SRE nodes per appliance. Capacity scales from 7.5 TB to more than 1.2 PB (up to 60 PB with compression and deduplication) of usable storage per appliance. Veritas NetBackup software also supports up to 32 different data streams to a single tape drive. This powerful software enables users to manage the highly flexible configurations possible in the S2100-ES2, including the ability to configure logical combinations of up to 3072 virtual tape libraries and virtual tape drives.
Store More for Less When used with the compression feature built into the S2100-ES2, DeltaStor software deduplicates data at a ratio of more than 50:1 so you can retain more data on the VTL while minimizing the amount of storage and data center footprint you require. DeltaStor also lets you take advantage of Veritas NetBackup software’s highly flexible Advanced Client option functionality. This functionality lets you configure backup policies to optimize configurations based on recovery time and backup speed requirements. However, typical backup schema such as cumulative incremental backups (all changed data since last full backup) or differential backups (all changed data since last full or incremental backup) result in redundant data. DeltaStor maintains these schemas while eliminating data duplication, dramatically reducing the amount of storage needed on the VTL. The deduplicated data appears to Veritas NetBackup software as fully intact and is available for instantaneous restores.

Standard features on SEPATON S2100-ES2 VTLs include data path protection that eliminates all single points of failure in hardware and network connections. In addition, SEPATON’s grid-based architecture enables all SRE nodes access to all data at all times. It is designed with the following high availability features: • Dual inlet power: The appliance may be powered by two independent power grids. If one power grid fails (i.e. tripped circuit breaker), the appliance stays fully operational using the second power input. • Redundant power supplies and fans: The system continues to operate at 100% capacity and performance throughout a failure in a power supply or fan. Failures are flagged and reported instantaneously. • Redundant Fibre Channel switches: Two independent full duplex Fibre Channel SANs are built into the appliance. • Redundant Ethernet switches carry private communications among the VTL components. If one switch fails, the other maintains system operations without degradation of performance or availability. • Redundant RAID controllers in each storage array command module shelf. • Redundant Fibre Channel and Ethernet interconnects: All server and storage components are redundantly connected the internal Ethernet and SAN fabrics to ensure continuous performance in the event of a major system component failure. • Grid-based “any-to-any” architecture: All SRE nodes can access any data without inhibition. This feature ensures full data availability to a user’s backup/restore environment.

Integrated Remote Replication for Secure Off-Site Vaulting SEPATON Site2 software enables users to replicate data from an on-site S2100-ES2 to an off-site S2100-ES2 over a WAN for secure disaster protection. In the event of a disaster at the on-site location, the off-site VTL is immediately available. SEPATON’s Site2 technology integrates with Veritas NetBackup Vault option to ensure backup catalog consistency and to automate replication. lifecycle management of off-site media. It is an efficient technology for companies that need to move hundreds or thousands of tapes between their primary site and their vault. In a physical tape environment, NetBackup Vault handles the copying of media and the management of the off-site backup and restore processes, including creation of lists of cartridges to be sent off-site and

NetBackup Vault and automates this process. When NetBackup Vault requests a tape or range of tapes to be sent off-site, Site2 automatically replicates those cartridges electronically to the remote site. Conversely, when NetBackup Vault requests that cartridges be returned, Site2 ensures that they instantly reappear in the library. This is the same process that is used for physical tape vaulting except that it eliminates the need for human intervention and automates all of the data movement. This approach ensures catalog consistency since data movement is directly controlled by NetBackup Vault, and is not being managed by an entity outside the NetBackup software. NetBackup Vault option sees the S2100-ES2 VTL as a physical tape device, making it easy to integrate into existing environments for improved performance and disaster recovery.

The S2100-ES2 enables you to create a dedicated vaulting server for fast, automatic vaulting. Key features of NetBackup Vault option include: • Automatic ejection of tape media • Tape retention period monitoring to enable administrators to bring expired media to the primary site for reuse • Vault activity/status reports that include lists of media being moved off-site and onsite for managing off-site media • Off-site reporting capability • Bare Metal Restore™ option automates and streamlines the server recovery process by making it unnecessary to manually reinstall operating systems or configure hardware. This option handles complete restores faster, easier, and more successfully without training or administration.
Streamline Management Veritas NetBackup software provides an advanced management environment that allows for simple, centralized monitoring and control of all backup operations. Veritas NetBackup software lets you easily diagnose problems without having to parse transaction logs. Error explanations and recommended actions have been integrated into NetBackup interfaces to further simplify troubleshooting. If users need additional VTL management, they can use SEPATON’s simple web-based management console, which automates all aspects of disk storage, including: performance management, space allocation, sparing, capacity growth, and classes of service. No primary disk expertise is required. In addition, both Veritas NetBackup software and the SEPATON S2100-ES2 support all major UNIX platforms, Microsoft Windows, Linux, NetWare and others allowing enterprises to leverage their investment in existing technologies by consolidating backup routines on a single system.
