LEMO's Self-Latching Connecting System This self-latching system is renowned worldwide for its easy and quick mating and unmating features. It provides absolute security against vibrations, shock or pull on the cable, and facilitates operations in a very limited space.
The LEMO self-latching system allows the connector to be mated by simply pushing the plug axially into socket.
Once firmly latched, connection cannot be broken by pulling on the cable or any other component part other than the outer release sleeve.
When required, the connector is disengaged by a single straight axial pull on the outer release sleeve. This first disengages the latches and then withdraws the plug from the socket.
Mechanical Connecting Characteristics
Fv Fv: average latching force. Fd: average unmating force with axial pull on the outer release sleeve. Fa: straight pull force with axial pull on the collet nut. Fd
Notes: The forces were measured on outer shells not fitted with contacts. The mechanical endurance represents the number of cycles after which the latching system is still effective (1 cycle = 1 latching/unlatching – 300 cycles per hour). The values were measured according to the standard MIL-STD-1344A method 2013.1 and 2010.1. 1N = 0.102 kg. Mechanical endurance: 5000 cycles.

Introduction General Product Characteristics This catalogue gives full description of the main range of LEMO fibre optic connectors. They feature ceramic ferrules for the fibre optic contacts to provide alignment for both singlemode and multimode fibres. Our production programme has been increased to 12 series to include the miniature 00 series, watertight, and plastic shell connectors. The main features of the LEMO fibre optic connectors are: – – – – – – –
Self-latching connection system Two part plug and socket connection system A rugged construction with the ferrules positioned within the connector shell Easy cleaning of the ferrule end face Aesthetically pleasing The availability of a wide choice of products to suit singlemode, multimode silica, and plastic fibres A large choice of combinations of fibre optic and electrical contacts within the same housing
The LEMO fibre optic connectors are manufactured to the highest precision in order to ensure optimum optical performance even in the most severe application. Numerous accessories as well as a complete range of tools for fibre optic termination are included in our production programme.
Propagation of Light and Fibre Type The diagrams below show the typical transmission characteristic of singlemode and multimode fibres. In multimode fibres, the effect of modal dispersion causes delay in the received pulse and therefore limits the bandwidth of the transmission system (Fig. 1). If the fibre core is < 10 µm and the wavelength is ≥ 1300 nm, then only the fundamental mode is transmitted in the singlemode fibre (Fig. 2). The dispersion effects of singlemode fibres are very small and consequently they offer higher bandwidths when compared with multimode fibres. However, multimode fibres are usually ideal for short distance applications because they require less input optical power and can be driven by simple low cost LEDs. Cross section Fig. 1

Description of the LEMO Fibre Optic Contacts
In order to ensure the highest technical performance and to provide the optimum solution for a diversity of applications, LEMO has developed four types of fibre optic contacts; designated F1, F2, F3, and F4. These contacts are designed to operate with singlefibre, multifibre, and mixed fibre optics/electrical cable constructions and caters for single and multimode fibres from 9/125 to 1500 µm diameter. The choice of fibre optic contacts depends upon the following criteria: – Cable construction (singlefibre, multifibre, mixed optic/electrical) – Fibre type (singlemode or multimode cladding and core diameters).

Optical Performance for Contacts Type F1, F2, F3, and F4 The optical performance for the fibre optic contacts relates to the insertion and return losses measured at the junction of the fibre to fibre interface. These losses are caused mainly by minute geometrical effects of the critical alignment components and deviations in the fibre core and cladding dimensions. The insertion loss results for multimode and singlemode fibres are given whereas the return loss values are provided for singlemode fibres only. Insertion and return losses are expressed in decibels (dB). The data shown in the diagrams below correspond to numerous matings using various batches of optical fibres. General Characteristics
Outer Shell Brass In most cases, LEMO connectors have a brass outer shell which is suitable for most general purpose applications, including civilian, and military. The brass outer shells have a chrome nickel-plated surface which ensures very good protection against industrial atmosphere, salt air, and most corrosive agents. Alternative protective coatings are available to satisfy other specific environmental conditions: – Black nickel-chrome. After the black chrome treatment, the part is coated with a protective film – Electrolytic nickel. Stainless Steel For the nuclear industry and its various secondary industries where there are severe environmental conditions and where elements are subject to radiation, LEMO offers stainless steels (AISI 303). These parts receive no surface treatment.
Aluminium Alloy The aluminium alloy outer shells find numerous applications where light weight is a predominant factor; such as in the aeronautics and space industries, and for portable and mobile equipment. These materials have high mechanical strength and excellent resistance to corrosion. The shell surface is protected by anodizing which is available in six colours: blue, yellow, black, red, green, and natural. Plastic Materials Connectors from series 3P have an outer shell in Polysulfone (PSU) which offers excellent electrical insulating properties and is suitable for gas or vapour sterilization. Other Metallic Components In general, they are manufactured in brass. However, bronze is used where good elasticity is required (for example: earthing crown). These parts are nickel-plated.

Insulator LEMO uses PEEK (Polyether Etherketone) for the insulator material. The performance of this thermoplastic material is enhanced by the addition of glass fibres in the resin to achieve very high mechanical strength, to
10
increase dielectric strength and to reduce water absorption rate. The above features of PEEK plus its excellent radiation resistance makes it ideal for most applications.

Fibre Optic Contact The fibre optic contacts are presented in the Introduction section from page 6 to 8.
Electrical Contact Technical Description The secure, reliable electromechanical connection achieved with LEMO female contacts is mainly due to two important design features: 1. Prod proof entry which ensures perfect concentric mating even with well used and/or carelessly handled connectors. 2. The pressure spring that maintains a constant, even force on the male contact when mated. The leading edge of the spring is chamfered to slide smoothly on the male contact, preserving the gold-plated surface treatment and preventing undue wear.
Crimp Contacts The crimp method requires a controlled compression to obtain a symmetrical deformation of the strands of the conductor and of the material of the contact. The radial hole in the side of the contact enables correct positioning of the conductor with the contact to be verified. The LEMO crimp contacts are factory annealed to relieve internal stresses, and reduce the risk of the material work hardening during the crimping process. Features of the LEMO crimp contacts: – Quick and simple assembly – Insulator is not heated during contact to conductor assembly – High temperature applications possible – Increased conductor retention force
Conductor retention method Both male and female contacts are available in crimp or solder versions. Solder Contacts The conductor bucket of these contacts is machined at an angle to form a cup into which the solder can flow. øA

Note: 1) The variance in conductor strandings which are quoted as being a specific AWG is so large that it may not be possible to achieve crimp as per MIL-C-225201-01. The conductor size should be verified against the contact diameter H before proceeding. 2) For solder contacts, diameter 0.7 of series 3P the diameter H is 0.6 mm. The AWG maximum is for 24 (single strand) and 26 (multistrand) respectively.

Material and Treatment Female electrical contacts are made from bronze (Bz4). Bronze is chosen because of its high modulus of elasticity, its excellent electrical conductivity, and its resistance to abrasions. Male crimp contacts are manufactured in a brass material which is ideal for crimping onto the electrical conductor.
Contact Resistance in Relation to Numbers of Mating Cycles The measurements shown in the table opposite were taken after subjecting the contacts to a corrosion test according to MIL-STD-202 method 101 D.

Cable Fixing for Series 00 and 0B In this series of single fibre connectors the fibre optic cables are held onto the contacts using the hexagonal crimping technique. The cable strain relief (aramid yarn) is retained between the knurled section of the contact ➃ and the crimp ferrule ➀. The support tube ➄ is used to protect the delicate optical fibre from the crimping load. Buffer coated fibres are retained into the fibre optic contact using an epoxy technique. The fibre optic contact is retained into the connector with the collet nut ➂ (Type T). Series 00 Type E fixing (crimp) 4

Series 00 Introduction The 00 series connectors are supplied with the LEMO F4 type fibre optic contacts. The main features of this series are as follows: – Security of the LEMO self-latching system – Minimum mounting space requirement (high packing density) – Protection against accidental contamination or damage to the fibre end face because the ferrules do not protrude outside of the connector shell – The alignment key (G, B) ensures excellent repeatability of performance during frequent matings. Series 00 consists of nine connector models. The active device housings are designed to accept emitting or receiving components such as LEDs or photodiodes in a TO-18 case. The plugs and sockets are suitable for use with singlefibre cables fitted with singlemode or multimode fibres of the following dimensions 9/80 - 9/125 - 50/125 - 62.5/125 - 100/125 and 100/140 µm.

LEMO offers a choice of empty TO-18 sockets for the user to fit suitable active devices, or alternatively the housing may be supplied with a selection of emitting or receiving components as shown in the models described on page 20. The sockets have a ferrule pre-assembled with the operating fibre which is used to connect the active device to the connecting fibre. When this system is used with singlemode fibres, the active device end of the connecting ferrule is polished at an angle to ensure negligible back reflections. Emitting Diodes

Series 0B Introduction The 0B series connectors are designed to work with the LEMO F3 type fibre optic contacts. The main features of this series are as follows: – Security of the LEMO self-latching system – Minimum mounting space requirement (high packing density) – Protection against accidental contamination or damage to the fibre end face because the ferrules are recessed within the connector shell – The alignment key (code A…F) ensures excellent repeatability of performance during frequent matings. Series 0B consists of six connector models. The active device housings are designed to accept emitting or receiving components such as LEDs or photodiodes. The plugs and straight sockets are suitable for use with singlefibre cables fitted with Si/Si or plastic multimode fibres with dimensions ranging from 200/230 to 1500 µm external diameter.

Series 2K-5K Introduction The 2K-5K series connectors are designed to work with the LEMO F1 or F2 fibre optic contacts. The main features of these series are as follows: – Security of the LEMO self-latching system – Specially designed for outdoors applications. All these models are waterproof during mating and reach a protection index of IP66, according to the IEC 529 standard – Protection against accidental contamination or damage to the fibre end face because the ferrules are recessed within the connector shell – The polarization key (code A…F and L) ensures excellent repeatability of performance during frequent matings – A choice of 18 configurations of multifibre or mixed optic/electrical contacts. The series 2K-5K consist of twelve models which will accept outer cable diameters ranging from 1.5 mm to 23.5 mm. Depending upon the type of fibre optic contact chosen, the connectors can accommodate singlemode fibres in Si/Si 9/80 or 9/125 or multimode fibres in silica or plastic with dimensions reaching 1500 µm.

Series 3P Introduction The 3P series connectors are designed to work with the LEMO F1 or F2 fibre optic contacts. The main features of this series are as follows: – Security of the LEMO self-latching system – Protection against accidental contamination or damage to the fibre end face because the ferrules are recessed within the connector shell Specially designed for applications requiring minimum weight, maximum electrical insulation values, together with high thermal and mechanical properties, as well as suitability for either vapour or gas sterilisation. These connectors offer remarkable safety features utilizing non-conductive materials for the shell and providing four different systems to prevent accidental cross mating: – A coloured ring – Housing keying – Insert keying – Insert polarization The 3P series consists of 3 models and offers two mixed fibre optic/electrical contact configurations with cable outer diameters ranging from 6.7 to 9.5 mm. Depending upon the type of fibre optic contact chosen, the connectors can be used with singlemode or multimode fibres ranging from 9/80 and 9/125 to 1500 µm.

Insertion and Extraction of the Fibre Optic Contacts Cable Termination Detailed instructions for terminating single fibre cables with LEMO fibre optic contacts on cables are given in the reference manual DRV.020 supplied with the complete termination workstation (see page 72).
Insertion and Extraction of the F1 Type Contact Insertion The fibre optic contact terminated on the cable must be inserted into the connector insert until it comes to a stop. Ensure that the contact is correctly retained by gently pulling on it. Extraction Push the extractor, reference DCC.91.312.5LA (see page 73), in the insulator and push on the contact to compress the clip. Gently remove the fibre optic contact by pulling on the cable.
Insertion and Extraction of the Fibre Optic F2 Type Contact Insertion The fibre optic contact terminated onto the cable is inserted into the insulator of the connector until it reaches a stop. Make sure the contact is correctly positioned into the antirotation key. Check that the contact is held correctly by pulling gently on the cable. Clip the alignment device onto the fibre optic contacts which is already fitted into female insulator. This procedure is performed with the extractor (reference DCC.91.312.5LA) using the threaded end which should be screwed onto the alignment device. Alignment device
Extraction Reverse the order of the operation described above to extract the alignment device. Place the extractor (reference DCC.91.312.5LA) into the insulator and push on the contact until it comes to a stop to compress the clip. Gently pull the fibre optic contact by the rear to remove it from the insulator. Alignment device

Series EA Introduction The EA series connectors are suitable for use with singlemode fibres. It uses the OPTABALL® alignment system and it is fully compatible with the RADIALL VFO and DF series of connectors. The exclusive OPTABALL® system provides for continuous adjustment of the distance between the fibres. Alignment is guaranteed to within a tolerance of 1 µm which compensates for light beam deflections, and maintains an angular misalignment of less than 0.4 degree. These connectors can be terminated by polishing the fibre end either flat or angled. They were specifically designed for systems where transmission requires high performance and minimum insertion losses. Flat polishing combined with an index matching fluid reduces back reflection to -30 dB. Angled polishing with a dry interface gives excellent back reflection results. It also enables the insertion loss of the connector to be controlled and makes it possible for LEMO to offer a wide range of fixed and variable attenuators.
