General Machine Description The Hoffmann MS35SF Double Miter Saw with Dovetail Routing Stations is designed solely to process material for the Hoffmann Dovetail Joining System. This machine is to be used only to cut and rout material for Hoffmann Dovetail Keys, size W-1, W-2 and W-3. USE OF THIS MACHINE FOR ANY OTHER OPERATION IS DANGEROUS AND WILL VOID THE WARRANTY. The manufacturer cannot be held liable if the machine is used for any operations other than outlined in this manual. The Hoffmann MS35SF is designed to miter cut at 45 degree angles and to rout up to four dovetail shaped keyways in hard and softwoods as well as wood related sheet goods, such as particleboard, MDF, plywood, MDO, etc. Different modes of operation can be selected: a) Miter sawing only b) Miter sawing and routing of first keyway c) Miter sawing and routing of second keyway d) Miter sawing and routing of first and second keyway After the material has been placed on the machine table, both saw blades move through the workpiece, cutting 45-degree miters. If the routing option is selected, the routing stations move upward and rout either two or four keyways in the mitered ends. After the cycle is completed, the pneumatic clamps retract and the material is released. 4. Operator Training The Hoffmann MS35SF is to be operated, maintained and repaired only by properly trained and qualified personnel. It is imperative that the operator has carefully read and understood these operating instructions, and that he or she is aware of all potential risks resulting from operating this machine. Machine Installation 5.1 Unpacking – Inspection Upon receipt, check the machine and shipping container for any damage. Report any transportation damage to the delivering carrier and indicate it on the bill of lading. Request an immediate inspection for assessment of damage. Claim should then be entered with the carrier. The carrier is solely responsible for any loss or damage during transit. 5.2 Placement After unpacking, select a suitable location with enough room around the machine for safe and unobstructed workflow, cleaning and maintenance. The floor should be reasonable level, with good overhead lighting. The machine has adjustable bolts with locknuts on each leg to aid in leveling the unit. Check for level on the machine table from left to right and from front to back. A precision machinist’s spirit level MUST be used. Absolute level installation is important for proper operation of this machine! Use a 3-4 ft. precision straight edge to check alignment of the table edge and fence rails. Make adjustments only with the leveling screws – Do not loosen or move fence rails! The infeed and outfeed tables are installed on adjustable support legs. The tables must be level and in-line with the machine tables, the support legs should be permanently fastened to the floor with suitable anchors. 5.3 Cleaning Clean the machine and remove the applied rust preventive coating with a cotton rag and thin oil (WD-40 or similar). Be careful when using liquids containing silicones – the finishing process of your material could later be impaired. Never use thinner or solvents to clean machine, damage could result. Never clean the machine with electrical and air power supplies connected – see Safety Rules. 5.4 Electric Connection Any electrical connections must be made by a qualified and licensed technician in accordance with all local and national codes. WARNING! Be sure to check for proper saw blades rotation after connection is made. 5.5 Compressed Air Route a compressed airline to the machine. Caution: If a rubber hose is used be sure that is does not lie on the floor in the path of normal operator movement. It is recommended that the compressed airline drop from overhead. The airline connection should be made with a quick disconnect fitting to allow for positive lock-out from the air source when performing adjustments, cleaning, maintenance or repair work. The connection is made to the pneumatic fitting on the rear of the machine cabinet. CAUTION! WHEN AIR PRESSURE IS INTRODUCED TO THE MACHINE, THE HOLD DOWN CLAMPS AND THE MOTOR CARRIAGE WILL IMMEDIATELY MOVE TO THEIR HOME POSITIONS. THEREFORE, USE EXTREME CAUTION AND STAND CLEAR OF THE MACHINE WHENEVER COMPRESSED AIR IS INITIALLY CONNECTED. Machine Operation After the machine has been installed at its designated location and it has been leveled and secured, the electrical, compressed air and dust collection connections can be made. With everything connected and rotation of saw blades verified, the machine is now ready for operation. Follow these steps for proper operation and for your own safety: • • • • • • • • Turn on the electrical power supply with the main power switch located in the electrical control cabinet on the right-hand side of the machine. Depress the motor start button (1) on the operator panel. Both saw motors start, the router motors are automatically started just prior to the routing sequence. Yellow Set-Up will flash – press once to re-set machine and make ready for operation. Select the desired operating mode with the saw selection switch (2) and the router selection switch (3). Select either short or long workpiece option with selector switch (5). Place the material on the infeed table and slide it past both saw blades. Pull the material against the fence rail to assure proper cutting and routing results. Depress the two green start buttons simultaneously. The pneumatic hold-down clamps secure the material and the saw blades move down, completing the cut. If selected, the routing sequence will start immediately after the saw blades begin to return to their home position. Caution – both tables move outward at the start of the routing operation. If small or short material is being cut, the workpiece can be clamped by depressing the pneumatic foot pedal. The cutting and routing sequence is then initiated as above. • After the routing sequence is completed, the machine tables move to their home positions and the pneumatic clamps release the workpiece. Note: If during the sawing operation the green start buttons are released, the machine will immediately return the saw blades and router heads to their respective home positions. Change of Router Bits The router motors are equipped with precision collets to assure clean and chatter free routing operations. To install router bit (1), insert bit and tighten motor spindle (2) and collet nut (3) with two 17mm open-end wrenches (supplied in toolkit). The collet must be seated properly in the collet nut. If collet is not even with front of the nut when tightened, remove nut and re-install collet. To remove router bit, loosen spindle and collet nut with the same tools. After one turn, collet nut will reach a safety-lock. Using the wrenches, open nut completely and carefully remove router bit. Caution: Never tighten collet nut without router bit. Permanent damage may result! Routing Height Adjustment The proper routing height (or depth) is determined by the thickness of the material being processed. To assure a tight joint, the routing height should be adjusted so that the longest possible Hoffmann Key can be used. For example, 3/4” thick stock is generally joined with 5/8” long Keys. The MS35SF features separate routing height adjustments for the two key locations. The desired height is adjusted by moving the corresponding height adjustment bar (1), located on the right side of the machine. The bar is locked in place with the locking knob (2), the routing height can be read directly on the attached scale (3). 3 2 1 Hoffmann Machine Company, Inc. 1386 Drexel Road Valdese, NC 28690 Phone: (828) 430 - 4510 Fax: (828) 430 - 4620 e-mail: [email protected] www.Hoffmann-USA.com Hoffmann MS35SF Double Miter Saw with Dovetail Routing Stations 25 14. Adjustments 17.1 Adjustment of Cutting Angle The machine is set to exactly 45.0 degrees at the factory. This setting should not be changed without support from an authorized Hoffmann Machine Company technician. Please contact your dealer of Hoffmann Machine Company Inc. prior to attempting any adjustments. 17.2 Adjustment of Router Feed Rate The upward and return movement of the router carriage (the router feed rate) can be adjusted depending on the material being processed. The machine is equipped with a special two-stage control circuit for increased cycle times. • • The first stage moves the routers from their home position up until the router bits are just below the chip breakers (table inserts). The second stage controls the actual routing process through the chip breakers into the material until the pre-set height is reached. Hoffmann Machine Company, Inc. 1386 Drexel Road Valdese, NC 28690 Phone: (828) 430 - 4510 Fax: (828) 430 - 4620 e-mail: [email protected] www.Hoffmann-USA.com Hoffmann MS35SF Double Miter Saw with Dovetail Routing Stations 29 The feed rates are adjusted with flow-control valves in the pneumatics control cabinet on the left side of the machine. • • The first stage feed rate is adjusted with flow-control valve # 1. The second stage feed rate is adjusted with flow-control valve # 2. Closing the valves by turning the set-screws clockwise will slow down the feed rates, opening the valves will increase the feed rates. Even small adjustments of 1/8 – 1/4 turn will make a noticeable difference. Make adjustments slowly and never increase the feed rate to a point were the routers slow down or noise emission increases upon entering the work piece. Decreased router bit life, torn material and damage to router motor may occur if feed rate is set too fast.
