Introduction
The Vectron POS Mobile is a complete mobile register system providing the full functionality of the Vectron POS family. The mobile input terminals allow fast and easy operation in a variety of applications. The Vectron POS Mobile system consists of a base station, a terminal, an optional printer and the charge station. These four components form a complete POS system that can be extended by adding terminals, printers and base stations. In addition, wired peripherals can be connected to the base station and a network can be established with other Vectron POS systems. All data processing and storage is done in the base station, which runs the proven Vectron POS-software. The terminals are only the input devices, they receive output from the base station and pass on entries to the base station. This ensures that damage to a terminal will not cause a loss of data. This manual contains basic information on the individual components and the complete Vectron POS Mobile system. In the supplement you will find technical data, the index and a glossary of terms.

For Europe: Communication between the base station, Mobile terminals and Mobile printers is in accordance with DECT digital standard. The DECT technology guarantees a high transmission rate and with considerably less interference when compared to analogue techniques. For Non-European countries: The radio signals are transmitted with a frequency range of 2.4 GHz. This frequency band also allows for interference-free operation of the Vectron POS Mobile. Several Vectron POS Mobile base stations and stationary Vectron POS systems can be networked in a system with the full functionality of any Vectron network. The basic version of the base station has 4 radio channels and can communicate with 4 mobile devices. This can be extended to 8 channels with an internal expansion module. By means of optional external radio modules, addtional mobile devices can be connected and the range can be extened considerably. The mobile printers will dynamically attach to a free channel only when printing. This channel is not available for the terminals. The base station has four serial and one parallel interface to which peripherals such as stationary printers or PCs can be connected. The input terminal is operated by keyboard or touch screen and stylus. Entered orders are immediately transmitted to the base station where they are processed. The terminal accepts payment by smart card. The mobile printer can print a bill at the customer‘s table and may also be used for other printing that may need to be done. The printer may also be used for reading of Credit Cards. The batteries for the Mobile terminals and the Mobile printers are charged in the charge station. The available accessories for the Vectron POS Mobile will be presented in chapter 10. If you want to purchase accessories, please

The four serial ports (COM1 - COM 4) may be used for connecting printers or for PC communications with the Vectron Commander software. The parallel interface can be used for connection of either a POS printer or a standard 80 column report printer. Printers which will only work under the Microsoft Windows® operating system cannot be used. The 10BaseT network connector allows the base station to be networked with other Vectron POS products. This network is necessary for using the Mobile system in roaming mode. The Mobile terminals will communicate with the nearest base station yet the transmitted data is sent over the network to the correct base station. For details concerning roaming please ask your Vectron Systems dealer. Always use the supplied power adaptor for the base station! For pin assignments see below, supplement II.

Attention!
Attention!
Only connect peripheral devices, or use accessories supplied by your Vectron Systems dealer. The use of other accessories or peripherals may damage the POS system or its components. No liability is accepted for such damages!
Start the base station by connecting it to the power pack HW 1204 (US). All green LEDs flash twice simultaneously. Then you will hear a short beep and LEDs 1,2 and 3 flash. Then, LEDs 1 to 8 flash one after the other. Then all LEDs flash twice. Then all LEDs flash continuously two or three times and go out. The base station is now operating. This sequence will take approximately one minute. In case of disturbances during operation (indicated by simultaneous flashing of LEDs 1,3,5,7 alternately with LEDs 2,4,6,8) unplug the power pack from the outlet, wait one minute and plug in the power pack. This will cause the base station to reset and clear the error. If the error re-occurs, contact your Vectron dealer for assistance. An internal battery protects the program and sales data in the base station against power failure. In case of power failure your data will be stored. Nevertheless, you should restore the power supply as soon as possible.

6.2.8 Terminal On/Off Pressing for two seconds will switch the terminal on and off. Powering the terminal on or off will be confirmed with a short beep. When the terminal is switched on, the display shows „Searching...“ as the terminal searches for its base station. Having found the base station, the display shows „Connecting “ and the terminal tries to log on to the base station. Various identification data is checked to ensure the terminal may communicate with the base station. This identification process prevents unauthorized terminals from accessing your data and ensures that the system is aware of the correct assignment of printers, terminals and other connected base stations and Vectron POS terminals. When the identification process is successful, the display will briefly say „Connected“. The terminal is now logged on to the base station and ready for use. This process may take one or two minutes. When your dealer installs your Vectron POS Mobile system, he will make any needed settings to optimize the assignment of terminals and to minimize the possibility of disturbances. Occasionally, when the terminal is logging on to the base station, problems may occur. This is the case when „Searching“ or „Connecting“ stay in the display. This means that the identification could not be carried out successfully. To solve the problem please see the chapter „Trouble shooting“.

For ease of carrying the terminal, a belt clip or shoulder belt are available from your Vectron dealer
6.3 Mobile printer The Mobile printer works like an ordinary printer. As with the Mobile terminal, data is not transferred by cable but by radio. Each terminal can be assigned to a Mobile printer. The printer communicates with the base station, not with the terminal. The printers only use a radio channel when needed. Thus, if Mobile printers are being used, there must be one free channel available on the base station. All Mobile printers can share the one available channel. Because of this channel sharing, there may be slight delays when printing.

In order to prevent damage to the printer, use only standard thermal paper rolls with 9 m (29,5 ft) length, outer diameter of 30 mm (1,18 in), paper weight < 60 g/m² and a width of 58 mm (1,89 in). The following paper can be recommended: TF50KS-E2C ..... 65 µm (Nippon Paper Industries) TP50KJ-R ........... 65 µm AP50KS-E .......... 65 µm HP220-AB1........ 65 µm (Mitsubishi Paper) PD160R-N........... 75 µm (Oji Paper) This paper is available at specialized stores and from your Vectron dealer. 6.3.5 Starting the printer Switch on the printer by pressing the On/Off button for 2 or 3 seconds. The printer now tries to establish radio communication with the base station. This is indicated by the red LED, flashing for several seconds. When communication is established, the red LED goes out and the LED of the corresponding channel at the base station flashes. The printer then changes to sleep mode, indicated by a short flashing of the green LED. If radio communication could not be established, the LED goes out after a few seconds but the green LED at the base station does not flash. The printer changes to sleep mode. Switch on the printer once more (see above) to establish the radio communication between printer and base station. When in sleep mode, the printer minimizes its electrical use to prolong the battery life. It also releases the radio channel to which it is logged on. The printer will automatically wake up from sleep mode when it receives a radio print command. To switch off the printer, press the On/Off button for 2 or 3 seconds.
34

6.4 Charge station and batteries The batteries in the Mobile terminal and printer can be recharged in the charging station. The large slot at the front of the station receives a Mobile terminal and will charge the battery that is installed in the Mobile terminal. The small rectangular slot is for a Mobile terminal battery and the large rectangular slot will charge either a printer or terminal battery. Use only the supplied power pack HW 1204 (US) to connect the charge station to an outlet. The green LED indicates the charge station is ready for operation.

The corresponding charge control lamp (yellow LED) flashes. The charging takes 3-4 hours. When the battery is charged, the control lamp goes out and the device switches to conservation of charge to prevent overcharging and subsequent damage to the battery. If the charge control lamp does not flash when the battery is inserted into the slot, the battery is either completely charged or defective. Check the charge status by inserting it into terminal or printer and look at the charge indicator. If this indicates an empty or weak battery and the charge control lamp still does not come on when the battery is inserted, the battery is defective and must be replaced. If the charge control lamp flashes quickly when the battery is inserted, the battery may be defective. Remove and re-insert the bat-

37
tery into the charging slot. If the control lamp again flashes quickly, the battery is defective and must be replaced. Batteries are available from your Vectron dealer. A new battery may need to be completely discharged and charged again 3 or 4 times before it exhibits maximum lifespan. A complete charge takes 3 to 4 hours. Put unused batteries into the charge station where they will be maintained at a full charge. Excursion: operating life of batteries The batteries’ capacity mainly depends on how they are used and treated. A permanent charging of half-used batteries regularly leads to a decrease of power (so-called Memory-effect). The batteries may even loose the complete capacity. Terminals and radio printers may switch off without warning and cannot be switched on again. Other symptoms indicating exhausted batteries: • The battery must be charged in shorter intervals. • The terminal suddenly switches off and can only be operated with a new charged battery. The error message “Battery empty” is not displayed. • The terminal with exhausted battery shows “Searching...” after being switched on, then the message disappears and the display remains dark. • The printer suddenly stops printing, does no longer react and can only be operated with a new charged battery. Please note: Exhausted or defect batteries cannot be repaired, they must be exchanged and disposed of properly! Hints for a long operating life of batteries: • If possible use the batteries until terminal or printer point out the discharge. • Terminal: “Battery empty” is displayed. • Printer: When switched on, the green LED flashes at approx. 2 Hz.

Set-up of the Vectron POS Mobile
Due to its specific feature as mobile POS system where data exchange takes place via radio, some aspects concerning the set-up site of the Vectron POS Mobile should be considered which later on will optimize your work. • Set-up according to the surroundings First of all, the set-up of base station and mobile devices depends of the surroundings. Here, you must take into consideration the required radio coverage and the assignment user - mobile devices. When using the Vectron POS Mobile in a restaurant with several floors, the set-up must be different than that in a restaurant with indoor and outdoor service. • Testing the set-up Before putting into operation the Vectron POS Mobile, it is recommended to test it under real conditions. For this purpose, the restaurant for instance should be completely occupied and on terraces or in beergardens there should be sunshades and partitions which might disturb radio communication. • Set-up site of the base station Independent of the surroundings, the base station should always be mounted at a height of min. 2 m. It should be set-up at a central position in order to avoid disturbances in radio communication through ceilings or partitions. • Alignment of antennas Make sure that the antennas of the base station are always aligned vertically. Ask your Vectron Systems dealer to assist you with the set-up of the POS system.

Operation of the POS system
This chapter is an introduction to the basic operation of the Vectron POS Mobile. Your Vectron dealer has programmed your POS system to meet your operating requirements. Because of this some operating procedures may differ from those described in this manual. Your Vectron dealer will fully explain the functions installed for you.
9.1
Logging on and off the cash register
Before entries can be made, the cashier must log on to the Mobile terminal. This is to prevent unauthorized use of the terminal and to provide accurate recording of your sales information. 9.1.1 Logging on Enter the cashier number and with the stylus touch the field „cashier“ in the Mobile display. If a clerk has been given a code number, the display says „enter code“. Type the code on the keyboard and confirm with . The cashier is now logged on. 9.1.2 Log off There are 3 different ways of logging off. • by closing the guest check • by touching the „cashier“ field in the display • by logging on a different cashier Your Vectron dealer will select the method that is best suited to your needs

Reports
The Vectron POS Mobile offers many different reports. All available reports can be printed by touching „Mode“ and selecting „X-Reports“ or „Z-Reports“. In addition, reports can be read into your PC with the Vectron Commander Software where they can be further processed. The reports that are available will depend on the programming of Vectron Mobile system. „X-reports“ are interim reports. The totals are printed, but are not changed in any way. The totals will continue accumulating until a Z-Report is taken. „Z-reports“ are final reports. The totals are printed and then are reset to zero. They cannot be reprinted! After choosing either an X-Report or a Z-Report, then you may decide which report to print. The following are short descriptions of some of the most common reports. Transactions Gives an overview of the financial data, including turnover, taxes and Cash in drawer totals. Cashiers An overview of the financial data for each cashier. Cashier (single) An overview of the financial data for only one cashier. PLUs, Departments, Main groups Reports the source of your sales by individual item or by groupings of similar items.
44
Vectron POS Mobile
Open balances Lists all Guest Checks that have not yet been paid. Invoices Shows all invoices that were created in the reporting period. Cashier-invoices Shows the invoices that were created by each Cashier in the reporting period. Hourly report Indicates the turnover per hour Journal Records all actions carried out on the POS system (sales, programming and reporting) since the last Z-report. For many of these reports you can choose between different report levels. For instance there may be a level for daily reports and another level for weekly reports. For some reports you may also select an evaluation range and print only the report for certain items. Due to the amount of data that may be printed, the PLU report, Invoice reports and Journals may require a large amount of time to print.

Additional remarks
In the following we will give you some additional hints that optimize your work with the Vectron POS Mobile and help to avoid disturbances. 9.4.1 Extension of radio range If the required radio coverage cannot be obtained and communication is often interrupted you should consider the application of roaming stations respectively external radio modules. •
Roaming station The Vectron POS Mobile can be connected to another base station which works as a so-called „roaming station”. This is a base station with restricted functions that serves to guarantee radio communication with terminals over larger distances. Compared to a complete base station, the roaming station does not include: • serial interfaces • entries If you have questions concerning the combination of Vectron POS Mobile and roaming station please ask your Vectron Systems dealer.
•
External radio modules For a considerable extension of radio range between terminals and base stations, an external radio module can be connected to the base station (see fig. 21). The advantage is that you can cover spacious restaurants without installing additional baserespectively roaming stations. Base station and external radio module are connected via serial cable. Depending on the quality of the cable, an up to 100 m connection can be established.
46
Vectron POS Mobile
Fig. 21: External radio module
If you have questions concerning the operation of Vectron POS Mobile with external radio module please ask your Vectron Systems dealer. 9.4.2 Energy saving measures As already mentioned, the terminal changes to the so-called sleep mode (see above, chapter 6.2.9.) after a pre-defined period. This sleep mode can be configured. • When choosing the „Strong“ mode, display and radio module of the terminal are switched off in sleep mode. If the terminal is activated again, it must log on to the base station via radio before it can be operated. This may cause a delay in transmission of entries from and to the base station. • When choosing „Weak“ mode, only the terminal display is switched off in sleep mode. The radio module of the terminal is still switched on and radio communicaiton is maintained. If the terminal is activated again, entries can be transmitted to the base station without delay.
Vectron POS Mobile
47
Since in „Weak” mode only the display is switched off, this leads to lower energy saving of the terminal battery than in the “Strong” mode. As a result, the battery is discharged faster and must be charged more often. It depends on the individual local circumstances which mode should be used. Please ask your Vectron Systems dealer to adjust the appropriate energy saving mode for you. 9.4.3 Careful handling of the terminal Especially during peak periods in restaurants the terminal can easily be damaged or even destroyed due to carelessness. At this point we would like to give you some hints on how you can protect your terminals and thus extend their operating life. • Do not put the terminal on a tray with drinks! When serving customers, the glasses may fall and the terminal will get wet. Always carry the terminal in the optionally available belt and holster. This is the best protection against moisture and other damage. A massive moisture damage will in any case lead to unserviceability of the terminal! • Even when carrying the terminal in belt and holster you cannot exclude that the display is damaged if it is turned away from the body. In narrow rooms or in times of hectic you easily bump against tables or counters. Thus, the display can be scratched completely. To protect the display from being scratched always carry the terminal with the display turned towards the body!
