Setting up new iPads and creating Apple IDs (Setup should be performed in the Media Center for WiFi access.) Before beginning these steps, acquire the following information for each user receiving an iPad: • • •
First and Last names Complete, accurate birth date – month, day, and year Desired password – at least 8 characters with at least 1 uppercase letter, at least 1 lowercase letter, and at least 1 number
Turn the iPad on by holding down the Sleep/Wake button at the top of the iPad for about 3 seconds. The Apple logo will appear and then go to the iPad screen shown in the next cell below. Using a fingertip, swipe the arrow from left to right to unlock the iPad.
Touch English if not already selected. Touch the blue button with the white arrow.
Use a finger to swipe the screen from bottom to top to scroll down the page.
Touch United States to select it. Touch Next.
Touch RCSSAir.
Touch the Username area to begin typing.
Type the email Username and Password for the iPad user.* *If the necessary information is not available, the person setting up the iPad can use their own information to connect to the Wi-Fi. Instructions are provided near the end of this tutorial for removing that information.
Once the Username and Password have been entered, touch Join.
Touch Accept.
Once RCSSAir is connected, it will turn blue and show a blue checkmark. Touch Next.
Touch Disable Location Services.
Touch Next.
Touch OK.
Touch Next.
Touch Create a Free Apple ID.
Use the scrolls to enter the birth date of the user for this iPad.* * This should be their correct birth date. The user will need to be able to enter it if they ever need to reset their password or change any other account information.
Once the correct birth date is entered, touch Next.
Touch the First Name area to begin typing.
Type the first and last names of the user. Touch Next.
Touch Next.
Touch the Email area to begin typing.
Enter the user’s BOE email address with @boe.richmond.k12.ga.us.* *This example shows a different email address, however the BOE address should be used.
Once the email address has been entered, touch Next.
Enter the user’s desired password in both fields.
Touch Next.
Touch the first Question area to begin entering Security Questions.* *If the user is able to pick which questions they would like, those questions and answers may be entered. If they are not available, use the questions and answers shown in this tutorial.
Touch the question: What is the last name of your favorite elementary school teacher?
Touch the first Answer area to enter the answer for the first question.
Type teacher1 as the answer to the first question.
Follow the same steps to answer the second and third questions using the answers provided in the picture to the right. Once all three questions are selected and the answers typed, touch Next.
Touch Next.
Touch On.
Touch Next.
Touch Agree.
Touch Agree.
Wait patiently for the Apple ID to be created. **Once the Apple ID is created, the user will receive an email from Apple prompting them to Verify their account. This MUST be completed before any Apps may be downloaded and installed. This should also take place before the iPad training. Verification emails expire after 7 days.
Touch Don’t Use iCloud.
Touch Next.
Touch Don’t Send.
Touch Next.
Touch ON.
Touch Next.
Touch Start Using iPad.
Touch Settings.
Touch General if not already selected. Touch About.
Touch Name.
Touch the x to clear out the existing name.
Type the user’s email username followed by “-ipad”. Touch Done on the keyboard.
Touch General.
Touch Date & Time.
Touch ON next to Set Automatically.
Touch Time Zone.
Touch the x to clear the field.
Type atl. Touch Atlanta, U.S.A. when it appears.
Touch OFF next to Set Automatically.
*The next 5 steps need to be followed if an account other than the user’s was used to connect the Wi-Fi.
Touch Wi-Fi.
Touch the arrow to the right of RCSSAir.
Touch Forget this Network.
Touch Forget.
Press the Home Button to get out of Settings and return to the Home Screen.

Once at the Home Screen, double tap the Home Button.
Touch and hold an App icon from the strip at the bottom of the screen. Hold it until the icon(s) start to wiggle.
Touch the red circle to close out the App completely.* *Apps do not close completely just from touching the Home Button. This method should be used from time to time to preserve power and resources on the iPad.
Once the App(s) are gone from the strip, press the Home Button one time to restore the Home Screen.
Once setup is complete, hold down the Sleep/Wake button.
Swipe the arrow button to the right to shut the iPad off completely. The iPad should be shut off to conserve battery while it is held for training.
