JOB SAFETYANALYSIS: Singer 191D (200/300A Series) Industrial Sewing Machine Department of Environmental Health & Safety STEPS TASK HAZARDS CONTROLS Step 1: Make sure machine is powered off before beginning.  none Before starting, make sure that hair, strings, earphones, etc. are secured and have no chance of getting caught in the machine. Step 2: Determine how many bobbins you will need and wind them now.  Catching hand between the turning mechanism and rubber belt on right side of the machine.  Dropping the weight of the machine on your hand while the machine is lifted.  Catching hand below needle moving up and down as bobbin is being wound. Make sure that hand is not near the mechanism/belt on the right of the sewing machine. Do not underestimate the weight of the sewing machine. Make sure that the machine is resting completely on the wooden peg before removing your support. When putting the machine back into position, make sure that you can handle the weight and lower it slowly. You should never let it drop. Keep hands in lap while winding the bobbin so that they cannot be caught in the moving parts of the machine. Refer to “How to Wind a Bobbin” instruction sheet. Instructional Video Step 3: Thread the machine. Refer to “How to Thread the Sewing Machine” instructional sheet. Accidentally pressing the pedal of the sewing machine, causing the needle, belt, and other parts of the machine to engage and perhaps result in injury. Make sure that machine is powered off and that foot is not touching the pedal. Instructional Video Link Step 4: Check the speed of the motor and adjust as needed.  Banging head against the table when raising back up from adjusting speed. Be aware of the sewing table when raising back up.  Accidentally engaging the pedal with your foot.  Getting hands caught in turning mechanism/belt. Keep foot away from pedal. Keep hands away from wheel and belt. If you need to touch them, make sure that foot is not touching the pedal. Begin with the notch of the motor pointing completely down. This sets the motor to zero. As the knob is turned away from you, or clockwise, the speed increases. Turn to the first speed level and move to the next step. Step 5: Turn the machine on. To turn machine on, locate power switch on the bottom right corner of table. Step 6: Place your knee next to the knee pad and use your knee to push knee pad to the right.  None Step 7: Place fabric under the presser foot and release the knee pad.  Finger getting caught under presser foot. Step 8: Engage the pedal of the machine to start sewing.  Catching hand under needle  Hands being hit by moving parts above the needle.  Catching hands in turning mechanism and belt when reaching for backstitch bar.  Sewing finger due to having hands too close while guiding the fabric under the presser foot. To adjust speed, remove foot from pedal and adjust speed dial as needed. Make sure fingers are not under presser foot when releasing knee pad.   Make sure hands are at a safe distance from the needle and be aware of their position at all times. Make sure to move periodically move hands back as you are guiding the fabric. Required Training: In-person instruction given by experienced staff. Required Personal Protective Equipment None.
