September 2013 Find the 5/8 inch line on your sewing machine. 1. Describe where the 5/8 inch line is on machine? BE SPECIFIC!! SAMPLE #1 2. Use fabric! SEW a straight line along the LONG SIDE of a piece of FABRIC, using the 5/8 inch line on your machine. Attach sample to packet! (2 points) REMEMBER THE 5/8 INCH LINE IS WHAT YOUR EYE FOLLOWS WHEN SEWING. BY FOLLOWING THAT CAREFULLY, YOU WILL ALWAYS SEW ACCURATELY. WATCH A TEACHER DEMONSTRATION. September 2013 SAMPLE #3 - SEWING A SEAM (9points) WATCH A DEMONSTRATION ABOUT MAKING A SEAM BEFORE BEGINNING THIS ACTIVITY! Use fabric unless we run out of scraps then you would use a paper towel. If you use a paper towel, draw a design on one side of the towel. This will be the RIGHT side of your towel. 1. Read and follow directions carefully. As you complete each step make a check mark beside it. Fold the fabric in half with RIGHT SIDES TOGETHER. 2. With PAPER SCISSORS cut out the pattern found on the next page. Place pattern on fabric and pin TOGETHER. (2-4 pins needed.) 3. Cutting through the fabric, cut around all four sides of the pattern. Cut as straight as you can! Cut around the NOTCH. Use FABRIC SHEARS to cut fabric! 4. Remove pattern (by unpinning). STOP! DO YOU HAVE RIGHT SIDES TOGETHER? (Design side should be on inside.) 5. Pin fabric together at the seamline. (Remember how pins were placed during the demonstration.) 6. Thread your sewing machine. 7-8. Sew a 5/8 inch seam stopping at the notch! Your pattern shows you where.
