8 SIEMON VersaPOD ® Data Center Solutions WWW.SIEMON.COM 8 IT IS ALL ABOUT USING YOUR SPACE WISELY There’s a ton to consider in the data center infrastructure, but physical space is always near the top. How will you fit everything you need today? What happens when you have more to add tomorrow? As equipment density grows, so grows the volume of data and power cables in your cabinets. You need a way to fit it all and do it in a way you can efficiently manage. 1 Just about all cabinets have 45U of horizontal mounting space and should, in theory, all support the same amount of equipment. But, traditional cabinets cannot fully utilize this space and cable management is the major limiting factor. You can’t fully populate a cabinet with equipment if you can’t realistically fit and manage the necessary cabling. Short of expanding your data center and adding more partially utilized cabinets, what is the solution? 8 MAKING SPACE. . . BY CONVERTING “WASTED” VERTICAL SPACE Siemon's VersaPOD cabinet system enables a completely new and efficient approach to your physical data center infrastructure. By leveraging the vertical space between bayed cabinets and at the end of row for Zero-U patching, cable management and power distribution, VersaPOD frees critical horizontal equipment mounting space for equipment and provides a dedicated, high capacity and easily managed cabling zone. 2 8 Zero-U Cable Management caBle acceSS POintS Multiple openings in the lid allow efficient cable routing access. An open floor design enables a high-capacity pathway for under-floor conveyance configurations. Vertical caBle ManageMent traYS Installed between bayed cabinets, these vertical managers help secure and route high cable-counts, converting internal vertical space into a large-volume cable management zone. caBle ManageMent FingerS Vertical 4- or 6-inch cable management fingers can be mounted alongside each Zero-U vertical space to facilitate routing of cords between equipment and patching fields as well as cabinet to cabinet connections. Optional hinged covers snap onto the cable management fingers to conceal and protect cable pathway for improved aesthetics. 3 DeDicateD caBling HigHwaYS Creating nearly 178mm (7”) of width between bayed cabinets and 191mm (7.5”) between equipment mounting rails and doors at the front and rear, the VersaPOD recessed corner post design creates accessible, high-capacity vertical and horizontal cabling highways – eliminating cable routing constraints associated with standard cabinet designs. Zero-U cable Management Benefits Getting cable out of the cabinet’s heavily congested equipment mounting space and into high-capacity vertical cabling zones drives benefits across your data center infrastructure, both for today and into the future. DenSitY - VersaPOD’s extra vertical space gives you the room to deploy ultra high-density data center infrastructures without sacrificing malleability of both cabling and equipment and maintaining the overall neatness and aesthetics of the facility. ZerO-U Vertical caBle ManageMent cHannelS Feature an array of integrated cable management options to offer a high capacity, easily accessible and concealable pathway for cable routing and slack management, without consuming or obstructing access to critical equipment space. Eliminates the need for obstructive, difficult to maintain cable management add-ons such as equipment-mounted swing-arms. enD-OF-rOw caBle ManagerS Mount vertically between the cabinet’s corner posts and side panels to provide additional Zero-U cable management zones at each end-of-row or stand-alone cabinets. ScalaBilitY - The high capacity of VersaPOD’s Zero-U cable management zones not only leave significant space to add cabling channels as your needs grow, it frees space needed to mount future networking equipment without the need to add more cabinets and consume valuable data center floor space. FlexiBilitY - VersaPOD’s wide variety of cable routing options enable it to support nearly any data center configuration, giving you the flexibility to design an infrastructure to fit your needs instead of working around the space limitations of traditional cabinets. acceSSiBilitY - With your cabling channels in their own dedicated space between the cabinets, you can perform ongoing moves adds and changes and gain unobstructed access to your equipment - less time in the cabinets and more on your strategic goals. 4 8 Zero-U Patching DUal-HingeD SPlit DOOrS Rear split doors can be hinged open in both directions or removed, providing direct and unimpeded access to either the vertical patching zones or equipment areas. ZerO-U Vertical PatcH PanelS Vertical copper and fiber patch panels provide up to 24U of Zero-U vertical patching space between every two cabinets (12 front, 12 rear) - up to 1152 copper and 1728 fiber ports. These panels conveniently slide forward providing access to the connections at the rear of the panel. receSSeD cOrner POStS 191mm (7.5”) of space between equipment ports and cabinet doors enables cables to be routed directly from Zero-U patch panels, cable managers or PDUs to equipment mounting areas. Also facilitates horizontal cabinet-to-cabinet cablerouting and patching. 5 Zero-U Patching Benefits SHOrter cOrDS anD JUMPerS - Zero-U patch panels put patching ports right beside equipment ports - reducing the need for more expensive, longer cords. Shorter cords and a more direct path improves air flow, aesthetics and simplifies channel tracing. MOre DeSign OPtiOnS - With your patching fields maintained in VersaPOD’s Zero-U vertical space, you can decrease or even eliminate the use of patch panels in traditional 19” horizontal mounting space freeing this space for additional networking and storage equipment options. ScalaBilitY - Supporting up to 1152 copper and 1728 fiber patching ports between every 2 cabinets and at both ends of each row, VersaPOD provides ample patching capacity for future expansion - without labor-intensive re-design or additional cabinets. HigH-caPacitY HOriZOntal caBle ManagerS 2U and 4U horizontal managers are available with 4” and 6” depths to effectively create horizontal cable management highways across a row of cabinets for cabinet-to-cabinet cable routing and patching while hinged covers conceal and protect the cable pathway. enD-OF-rOw Vertical PatcH PanelS Mount up to 8U of (4 front, 4 rear) patch panels in the Zero-U vertical space at both ends of each row. 6 8 EFFICIENCY & THERMAL MANAGEMENT With energy costs continuing to rise, Siemon’s VersaPOD system has been designed to control air flow to maximize Vertical exHaUSt DUct (chimney) Passively directs the hot exhaust heat from active equipment vertically into the return air space to increase HVAC efficiency. Can be field extended to a range of ceiling heights. thermal management and efficiency without sacrificing equipment and cabling density. PrOPer caBle ManageMent By moving cables out of the horizontal equipment mounting areas and away from equipment cooling fans, VersaPOD improves overall airflow and cooling efficiency. OPen FlOOr acceSS Each VersaPOD unit has a completely open base, enabling maximum air flow and routing of cabling into or out of raised floor pathway systems. OPtiOnal acceSSOrieS Each VersaPOD unit includes provisions for roof mounted cooling fans and additional accessories such as brush guards, blanking panels and grommets to promote proper air flow and temperature control. 7 Vertical caBle ManageMent traYS Up to 8 trays can be installed between each set of bayed cabinets to isolate air flow from cabinet to cabinet while facilitating routing and slack management of cabling. HigH-FlOw DOOrS Front and rear doors enable over 71% airflow to ensure proper hot aisle/cold aisle circulation. Split rear doors require smaller opening clearance, maximizing user access in shallow hot aisles. cOOling DOOrS VersaPOD transition frames available for mounting of liquid-cooled rear door heat exchangers from the Vette Corporation (Coolcentric™) and U-Systems (Coldlogik™). 8 VersaPOD THERMAL CAPACITIES Analysis Overview: This analysis is based on a third-party thermal capacity study of the VersaPOD cabinet using CFD modeling and uses the following parameters: - A single VersaPOD was fully populated with 1U/500W servers - A perforated floor tile placed in front of the cabinet provides an air output of 55°F, 600CFM - Servers were evenly removed until equipment intake temperatures met manufacturer requirements Temperature 140˚F /60˚C 122˚F /50˚C 104˚F /40˚C 86˚F /30˚C 68˚F /20˚C 50˚F /10˚C AnAlysis #1: sTAndArd Versapod cAbineT AnAlysis #2: Versapod wiTh VerTicAl exhAusT ducT & fAns - 1000mm (40”) VersaPOD cabinet - Perforated front and rear doors - No fans or vertical blanking panels installed - Blanking panels are used in horizontal locations where equipment is not present - 1200mm (48”) VersaPOD cabinet - Perforated front doors - Solid rear doors - Vertical exhaust duct - 3 fan trays installed in top of cabinet (9 fans total) - Blanking panels are used in horizontal locations where equipment is not present (14) servers installed within limits of intake temperatures (14) x 500W = 7kw capacity (26) servers installed within limits of intake temperatures (26) x 500W = 13kw capacity 8 8 MORE USABLE SPACE = MORE DESIGN OPTIONS While the VersaPOD’s innovative design offers unique features to improve the efficiency and manageability of all common data center environments and configurations, its greatest benefit may be its versatility.
