Signage Printers (UV and Solvent) & Textile Printers Cutters, Laminators, Inks & Substrates
We have attended SIGN Istanbul every year for many years. We would not dedicate the time it takes to fly back and forth, plus the four days at the expo, unless SIGN Istanbul was worth the long trip. SIGN Istanbul 2016 was a great show, as we detail in the following pages with lots of photographs. SIGN Istanbul also had lots of people attending, as you can see from our photos.

UV-Curing Printers
About 18 brands of UV-curing printers were available to look at here at SIGN Istanbul. So any brand which failed to exhibit lost sales to these 18 brands which were clever enough to be present with a booth. No matter how often you advertise in a trade magazine, what counts is having a booth with the owner, managers, and sales reps of your brand present to speak with print shop owners and managers. Here at SIGN Istanbul both international brands such as EFI VUTEk, Agfa, Mimaki, HP Scitex, Dilli and others had their UV-curing printers. Plus leading Chinese brands such as Flora (RTZ), JHF and others. We list each and every brand and model, and what print heads each uses, in our TRENDs level reports on UV-curing printers at SIGN Istanbul.

Signage Printers (UV and Solvent) & Textile Printers Cutters, Laminators, Inks & Substrates Because there were so many large signage trade shows in September and early October, and then the frankly giant textile printer expo in Shanghai in October, it will take another month to catch up to issue all the lists, comments and discussion of the trends (up, and down) of each brand and each kind of printer. All these special reports are available to factory brands or distributors who have a full-year subscription, or who ask for the reports for one particular country.

Mimaki had 17 models of UV-curing printers at SIGN Istanbul, more than all other Japanese brands put together. Actually there were more Mimaki UV printers than Chinese UV brands put together. Clearly the team from Mimaki Europe and PIMMS and their partners who are bringing Mimaki into Turkey are doing a successful job. I did not notice the Canon concept of “UV gel” ink at SIGN Istanbul. This is a perfect example of “if you don’t have a booth at the key printer trade show in your country, you lose market share to the clever brands which do exhibit.” This new ink chemistry was introduced at Drupa 2016 and featured in the Canon booth at SGIA 2016 in the USA. It will be interesting to see if Canon will persevere in promoting this ink. Most new inks come out with a blast of PR releases and then fade away the next two years. I comment on this in the section on latex inks other than from HP. So far, HP is the only company in the world which has introduced a new ink concept and stuck with it through thick and thin. All other new inks have been shown worldwide in their launch year, then no longer featured in future years: Sepiax is one example: SUV (solvent UV) is another. Staedtler Lumicolor is a further example.
Here is Senaida Ba, of FLAAR Reports, taking notes on a Mimaki desktop UV-curing printer in the booth of Procolor.

Test Prints at Trade Shows
We realize that printer operators are busy during a trade show, thus we appreciate that the team operating the efi VUTEk GS3250LX Pro in the LiDYA booth cooperated to produce test prints.
These test prints documented the frankly remarkable color gamut of the UV-curing ink used in this the efi VUTEk GS3250LX Pro: the reds of the macaws and tomatoes are bright red. Most other UV-curing printer inks are not really this good with reds. Also the yellows printed very nicely.

Here are some samples of our comic frontcovers and it’s amazing how the EFI Vutek prints.
The yellows and greens from this efi VUTEk printer are also better than average. You may notice that the front covers to our children’s educational books have a wide range of colors. This makes these front covers good for print samples. To review and evaluate UV-curing printers it helps to have diverse colors. Some colors
print better with UV-curing ink than with textile inks, as but one example. You can download (at no cost) 4-page previews to all these books on www.MayanToons.org

Solvent Ink Printers The market for solvent ink printers is alive and well in Turkey. There were about 21 booths with solvent printers at SIGN Istanbul 2016. I doubt you could find 21 booths of solvent printers at other expos. This is an example of the benefits of attending SIGN Istanbul: lots of all kinds of printers. Mimaki in the nice PIMMS booth printed a test print for us. Here it is coming off the printer. The second photo shows part of the children’s book development team holding the Mimaki eco-solvent print at the right. The larger print at the left is from an efi VUTEk UV-curing printer. The “jungle” is the Mayan ethnobotanical research garden surrounding the FLAAR office in Guatemala, Central America.

Signage Printers (UV and Solvent) & Textile Printers Cutters, Laminators, Inks & Substrates Lots of solvent printers from Roland and Mutoh. Mutoh had a healthy exhibit at SIGN Istanbul. In most other expos around the world Mimaki and Roland have the biggest booths and Mutoh the smallest. So the distributors for Mutoh are doing a good job in Turkey. In addition to the traditional Japanese solvent brands, there were also Chinese brands such as Human Digital in the booth of Pass, Fortune in the booth of EkoDigital.
To write a review, evaluation, and recommendation of a printer or an ink or media/substrate or cutter, the first step is to he at the factory demo room, or at least at a large demo room of the printer brand in another country. During a visit to a demo room we can see the results of our test prints and then write the analysis and assessment and recommendation in the FLAAR Reports. For example, a few weeks after SIGN Istanbul the ink company TrendVision flew two of us to visit their factory and factory demo room. So we are now issuing an entire report on this company, plus a FLAAR Reports video on TrendVision ink, plus an entire web page on all their inks.

Here is Hülya Beyler, Import Manager of Istanbul Reklam in front of their nice partner branded printer. Istanbul Reklam is clever in importing printers from several different factories so they can offer a wide range of solvent printers in their nice booth at SIGN Istanbul every year. Since ink companies need to know how many brands of solvent printers, how many textile printers, and how many UV-curing printers are popular in each country, we make a list of 100% of each kind of printer in each expo that we visit around the world. These we provide to ink companies who subscribe. We also identify which print heads are in which printers; for example, Roland has finally realized that using Epson print heads has many disadvantages so the new model of Roland TrueVIS VG-640 uses a totally new and different print head. Plus, as soon as a factory drops Epson print heads the factory can offer ink from different sources, potentially at a lower price. Mimaki figures all this out many years ago. It will be interesting to know when Mutoh will recognize the benefits of other print heads. Ink companies need to know the trends in print head brand acceptance (or rejection) because each print head may require a slightly different ink. So we prepare tabulations for which print head brands are in textile printers, in solvent printers, and in UV-curing printers. These tabulations we provide to ink companies who subscribe.

Latex Ink Printers
HP certainly deserves honorable mention for the amount of time, effort, and tons of money they have pumped into the concept of latex ink printers. A Chinese brand tried to produce a latex ink printer but failed when Chinese print shops did not jump for this alternative.
around the world in 2016 and 2015 no longer had the Mimaki latex printer (nor the Mimaki SUV printer) on exhibit any more. HP latex printers were on exhibit in the pertinent HP distributor booths.
It was nice to see Mimaki offer their Japanese alternative to latex ink, but unfortunately over 80% of the expos
12

Water-based Printers
Since there were so many solvent printers, UV-curing printers, and textile printers, it was a challenge to search for the water-based printers, but HP does still offer these, as does Epson. But at signage trade shows it is other ink types which get featured: latex ink printers for HP and solvent and textile printers for Epson.
companies such as efi VUTEk, that they realize that in coming years more inks will have to be more water-based (and not with solvent components labeled as co-solvents to dilute the displeasure with the name and concept of “solvent” components which are still present in more percent of inks than anyone really wants to admit.
That said, we have noticed when we visit ink factories and when we are at press conferences of major international

being “featured” as only a logo on the wall of a distributor. I must admit that I prefer learning about an ink from the factory personnel in a factory-branded booth. So it was nice to see the TOYO Ink booth and the Limei Jetink which had an actual booth featuring their actual products.
If you have your own booth they you can really interact with end-users. I say this because year by year ink brands move from being featured in their own booth to

Printable Media & Substrates Backlit media is becoming increasingly popular, especially since there are now more kinds of printers for printing on back-lightable fabrics. Ten years ago you would tend to use a UV-curing printer; now you can use a textile printer at 30% of the cost of a UV-curing printer. The booth of a.berger had nice examples.
A frankly awesome example of backlit was in the booth of Sayar. The colors (from a Mimaki printer) were gorgeous beyond words to describe it. Vehicle wrap is a popular exhibit at trade shows around the world. You could see nice vehicle wrap at SIGN Istanbul.
More good examples come from DECOPRINT. I saw these at Sign Africa a few weeks before SIGN Istanbul, and then again here in Turkey.
There were plenty of Turkish, European, and North American brands of media as well as an entire area of Chinese brands, especially in Hall 11.
15
Signage Printers (UV and Solvent) & Textile Printers Cutters, Laminators, Inks & Substrates
Laminators & Coaters
The primary job of a laminator is to protect the colored inks from being damaged by the sun. Plus to protect the image from being scratched. Ten years ago you could find large-format laminators. Nowadays you see primarily entry-level laminators at 1.6 and 1.8 meters in width. 90% of these are made in China (even if the brand name is from Europe or USA).
achieved by the ink on the media by themselves. It is rare to find coaters being exhibited. It is a popular saying to claim that a printer does not require a laminator. But in fact laminators are still very useful. So it was good to see several booths at SIGN Istanbul with laminators available.
The primary benefit of a coater is to provide a surface texture or gloss or matte which is better than that
16

Flatbed Cutters
Every kind of flatbed cutter technology is available for print shop owners and managers to look at. The international brands were present: ESKO Kongsberg, Zund, Summa, UNIVERSAL as well as brands made in China. Of these, a brand we see at many expos is JWEI. Much of Hall 14 had cutters of all kinds: especially C02 laser engravers and CNC routers. Since my background is in architecture I am especially interested in cutters which can produce architectural models. The architectural models in the DEKAT booth were quite impressive.
My congratulations both to the architect and to the cutter operator (and especially to whoever put the model together).

3D SIGN Istanbul had more 3D printers than most other signage expos anywhere else in the world. The presence of 3D printers is because Tarsus owns a 3D printer trade show concept. Tarsus is allied with iFO so the 3D printers are are co-located within SIGN Istanbul. Because there were so many 3D printers and booths with the materials used for extruding to create the 3D objects, we have a separate FLAAR Report on 3D printers at SIGN Istanbul 2016.
But, 3D signage is different than 3D printers. You do not need a 3D printer to make a 3D sign. You can use any flatbed printer (normally a UV-curing flatbed). If you print on a certain kind of plastic, you can then heat-form (thermo-form) a 3D object.
Here is Senaida Ba with a 3D printed skull. We show all the other booths and individual printers in the separate FLAAR Report on 3D printers.
18
Signage Printers (UV and Solvent) & Textile Printers Cutters, Laminators, Inks & Substrates
Another way to create a 3D sign is to print on any rigid material and then cut it with a flatbed cutter. You could see cute birds and pretty trees in the cutter booth of KATZ Group (Koehler Paper Group). The more popular material for 3D signage is honeycomb sandwich material. You could see good examples in the booth of MatKagit.

3D Signage via Thermoforming Inks
The efi H1625-SD can use thermoforming ink so you can produce multi-dimensional signage. You need a heat press with a 3D object onto which you press the pliable plasticlike sheet you print on with the stretchable ink.

Textile Printers
Textile printers are in increasing demand as the world moves towards more soft signage. And in addition to signage, the fashion industry prefers inkjet printers rather than traditional dye machines or other chemical coloring which require huge amounts of water (because the water is polluted in the workflow process).
present in those booths which have DTF printers. But many booths which print on transfer paper do not fully show the calendaring machine. Or, the calender is exhibited but is not actually being used. Mutoh has a strong presence in Turkey, better than their presence in many other countries. The folpa booth was one of several booths with Mutoh printers. In another other expo elsewhere in the world, there was only a teeny tiny booth with Mutoh printers. So clearly folpa and STR are doing an excellent job in Turkey.
Textile printers with most inks require a curing or heating or sublimation unit after the material is printed in the wide-format printer. So it helps if a trade show has these items of the workflow, such as calendering machines. For the sublimation units (for direct-to-fabric) these units have to be physically in front of the printer, so are

T-shirt Printers
Every day the DTG booth had great designs.
Lots of T-shirt printers at most trade shows we have attended, especially SGIA in the USA and any other expo whose origin in the past decade was screen printing. SIGN Istanbul has an entire hall focused to a large degree to screen printing and T-shirts. T-shirts can be printed with screen printers, toner printers on transfer paper, or direct-to-cloth with an inkjet printer (such as Brother). OKI toner printers are
popular and exhibited in many several booths (the OKI booth itself and T-shirt focused booths). One aspect of textile printing in particular and T-shirt printing in particular is that the graphic design needs to understand the size and shape of a T-shirt, and what colors look best on black or on white cloth. A good example of an innovative T-shirt design was the frontal rabbit concept in the booth which offered the DTG printers.
22
Signage Printers (UV and Solvent) & Textile Printers Cutters, Laminators, Inks & Substrates
DTG printers were in the booth of TTS Digital. They had professional quality equipment to print several T-shirts at the same time, saving you money and time. Plus, the TTS Digital booth had outstanding graphic designs for their T-shirt print samples.

Toner Printers at SIGN Istanbul 2016
There were so many toner printers at SIGN Istanbul 2016 that we have issued an entire separate FLAAR Report on desktop and office printers/ copiers. It is rare for a signage expo to also feature office printers, so SIGN Istanbul organizers deserve credit for the healthy presence of office printers and short-run digital presses. Once we return to our office, we compare the output of each brand of toner printer. Here are some of the graphic designers and illustrators for the FLAAR division which creates children’s books. You can download free 4-page previews of all of these on www.MayanToons.org. Here is Senaida Ba in the booth of Develop holding samples from our test images for toner and office printers.

Distributors Sayar, Sds, Promakim, Procolor
PIMMS, Istanbul Reklam, LiDYA Grup, MatSet, Folpa, Yatay Bilgisayar, sayar, sds, promakim, procolor, and a dozen other important distributors have their booth at SIGN Istanbul every year. In order to keep the file size of this PDF so that people can send it as an e-mail attachment, we can only have a limited number of photographs, but at least we want to mention the importance of distributors (in addition to the importance of the booths of the factory brands).
Also, during the last two days of the expo there were so many people in each booth that it was not realistic to take photographs. So of many of the respected brand names photographs are tough to take when filled with staff and attendees.

More than Printers at SIGN Istanbul
Since this is a signage show, you can also experience traditional LED signage. And of course you can find electronic signage. Plus, in Hall 14 I found a machine I have never noticed anywhere else in the world. I offer an entire page to show this item in the HSM booth.

Gulf Print & Pack, in March in Dubai.
In addition to several courtesy booths in Hall 11, the book-sized catalogue of SIGN Istanbul had full page announcements of the following signage trade shows: APPPEXPO (in Shanghai every March). This is now the largest printer expo in the world SGI Dubai (Sign Middle East), in Dubai in January. FLAAR has two people here every year since this is a key signage expo.

Several of these expo organizers such as D-PES Sign Expo China had a booth at SIGN Istanbul 2016. It is a nice courtesy of the organizers of SIGN Istanbul to provide these services.

Press Room iFO provides a nice Press Room every year at SIGN Istanbul, in a convenient location at the main entrance. I would rate the iFO Press Room as better than that of most other expos; Chinese expos are sadly weak in providing adequate Press Room facilities. Graphics of the Americas, Graph Expo, Photokina, Drupa, Glasstec, Sign Africa/ Africa Print: all provide a nice press room. What is especially appreciated is a functional printer so I can print my notes every day. SGIA, otherwise a substantial expo, had an incomplete and unprofessionally unequipped press room.
Here is Senaida Ba working in the Press Room.

Plus SIGN Istanbul still carpets all aisles. Most other expos have gone cheap cheap and leave only the scratched, scarred ugly concrete floor.
The hall maps were large enough to be helpful, plus they were not too high that you had to strain your neck to look up. Another aspect worth commenting on is the cleanliness of the floors. There were floor cleaning crews every day, every hour, all four days.
The order and cleanliness throughout the show is worth admiring. SIGN Istanbul is definitely one of the most neat tradeshows around the world.

The trade show center here in Istanbul has two hotels conveniently nearby. One is about a 100 meter walk. I have stayed here about three times. The other hotel is physically adjacent to the exhibit halls. This location makes this the most convenient hotel and thus I welcome staying here.
Here you can see the hotel rising directly above and adjacent to the main entrance to Hall 12.

School Groups at SIGN Istanbul
It is always nice to see school groups at a technology trade show. Most sign trade shows in the USA lack such tours for school groups. High school student groups should be encouraged to attend as well as college and university student groups.

The FLAAR Team at SIGN Istanbul Since SIGN Istanbul had three halls and lots of booths, it takes two of us to handle the quantity and quality of exhibits.
And from this photo you can estimate that Dr Nicholas is pleased to be at SIGN Istanbul 2016.
Here is Dr Nicholas at work taking notes.
This is Senaida Ba, who assisted Dr Nicholas every day. She has been Nicholas’s photography assistant for two years.

Signage Printers (UV and Solvent) & Textile Printers Cutters, Laminators, Inks & Substrates Providing backup for the two at SIGN Istanbul are two teams at the headquarters of FLAAR (FLAAR Reports and FLAAR Mesoamerica). This is the birthday celebration of Erick Flores. It is traditional at birthday celebrations for both FLAAR teams to share the birthday cake together. Dr. Nicholas is at the back (right of middle). As you can see FLAAR has lots of individuals on both teams (and this photo does not show everyone, since photographer Sophia is on maternity leave and Rita will be in the office
later, plus several of the Q’eqchi’ Mayan researchers are in their remote Mayan villages doing research for our books. But the size and capability of our teams shows why over 300,000 people read our web site on tropical flowers www.maya-ethnobotany.org and over half a million people read the FLAAR-Reports.org reviews and evaluations of inkjet printer trade shows, inks, and other aspects of both signage and industrial printing, plus toner printer reviews of office printers and short run digital presses.
So here you see the graphic designers who do the FLAAR Reports, plus the team of a dozen graphic designers and illustrators who do the children’s books (FLAAR Mesoamerica, whose pages are great print quality evaluation images). Also here are the web master and web design team: we do all this work in-house.

Turkey in general and Istanbul in particular is a popular destination
Here is a sample of the hospitable staff of EkoDijital.
Senaida Ba was my assistant at Glasstec, Photokina, and SIGN Istanbul. I asked her which expo was her favorite.
She replied, “SIGN Istanbul was my favorite because of the hospitality of the people at the expo and in the exhibitor booths.” Even when we could not speak the Turkish language, the booth personnel still invited us into their booth. This also happens at trade shows around the world, especially at Photokina since FLAAR was focused on photography actually before digital cameras became popular. But the friendliness of people in Turkey is notable.
At the Istanbul Reklam booth Hülya Beyler, Import Manager, took time to show us around the booth and helped answer our questions about their many products. Istanbul has so many great museums and world-class historical architecture that it is worth coming here to visit these national treasures. But this year there was so much to see and study at SIGN Istanbul that I must admit that I never left my hotel to do sightseeing as a tourist. Nonetheless, for people reading this FLAAR Report around the world, Turkey in general and Istanbul in particular we well worth visiting with your colleagues or your family. So for SIGN Istanbul 2017, allow at least one full day before or after the expo for traveling around this friendly city to see the historical landmarks.

Summary
If you are from a country anywhere in the world, it is worth visiting Istanbul for sightseeing in the museums and remarkable historical buildings. Plus the trade show is multi-lingual and multi-national: there are more people speaking English here at SIGN Istanbul than the printer expo I once attended in Japan; plus there are more people speaking English at SIGN Istanbul than in any expo in Brazil.
As I mentioned in the introduction, it takes two days to fly here (when you remember jet-lag recuperation) and in effect two days to fly home. Plus the four days at the expo itself. But SIGN Istanbul stands out as a successful expo and I am pleased to be here to visit with colleagues who make decisions based on FLAAR Reports coverage of which expos do we find worth attending around the world. The two factors which stand out are the notable presence of a co-located 3D printer exhibit area plus excellent preserve of toner and other office printers and short-run digital presses. Neither of the two main sign expos in the USA have office printers or 3D printers in any significant presence whatsoever.
The expo itself is doing well, especially when you notice how many expos elsewhere in the world are stalled or dropping considerably. Here you can see the people pouring in to the entrance hall.
37
Signage Printers (UV and Solvent) & Textile Printers Cutters, Laminators, Inks & Substrates
In other words, you can learn more about office printers, short run digital presses, and 3D printers and the diverse materials used for extrusion in these 3D printers at SIGN Istanbul than at the huge signage expos in USA! Plus UV-curing printers, textile, latex, solvent, waterbased printers; inks; media & substrates, flatbed cutters, along with traditional signage and LED electronic signage. That is why there is enough to need two of us. So when you yourself consider SIGN Istanbul consider bringing others from your company.
Another advantage of SIGN Istanbul is that they offer more than just printers, as you can see from this photograph of the illuminated booth in the center. In closing I show this photograph which rather clearly documents that SIGN Istanbul offers a diversity of products to attract an ample audience.

The 2017 show is in early October 2017 SIGN Istanbul 2017 is from October 4-8, 2017. You can see the details on the organizer’s web site, www.ifo.com.tr. And remember, SIGN Istanbul is co-located with 3D PRINTSHOW Istanbul. There were more 3D printers at SIGN Istanbul than every other sign printer expo I attended around the world in twelve months. The web site for the experienced expo organizer Tarsus is www.tarsus.com.
We are looking forward to attend next year expo.
